OK, Movie Soundtracks
As suggested by TexasStar
I'm a huge John Barry fan. I would suggest Body Heat as one of his best. I feel like sweating when I hear it.

Maybe I'm more the whimsical type or I just like Mark Knopfler. I loved the sound track to Local Hero. (Good movie too!)

I feel like sweating when I see other things in it.
Seriously, I forgot if I have the DVD. I haven't seen it in a long time. Wasn't one of the lawyers the guy now on "CSI"?
If memory serves, a gun in it looks like a nickled S&W M-36. Might be a Model 60.
Soundtracks that I admire include, "Patton", "The Longest Day, "Out of Africa", and "The Last of the Mohicans." (The 1992 version.)

Atticus Ross did a pretty good soundtrack for The Book of Eli.
I also thought the soundtrack in Man on Fire was pretty great, especially with how upbeat some of the music was for the scenes that song was in.
Also, I need to watch the movie again, but I had to laugh when I saw this scene in American Psycho.

My other favorite soundtrack composer was Henry Mancini.
Though he didn't write it you should catch his version of Walk on the Wild Side.

Dang Cmort, I could have written that list myself.
You left out Don Juan.

But he nailed, "Gladiator", which I should have mentioned. Dang, that's good music!
I believe, "The Sea Hawk" is two words, if it's the movie I have in mind. Did that star Errol Flynn or Tyrone Power? Been awhile since I saw it.
And, "Captain From Castile" with Tyrone Power and Caesar Romero has some good music, inc. the march, "Conquest." I saw that in Latin American History class in high school and loved it. Later found and bought the DVD.
I think it's the only place where you can hear spoken Nahautl, the language of the Aztecs, as Dona Marina/La Mallinalli negotiated with Montezuma's ambassadors. There's some Aztec music, too. Flutes, drums...If you've read the epic, "The Conquest of Mexico" by Bernal Diaz del Castilo, you'll especially enjoy this movie. The book details what the author and his companions on the Cortes expedition endured to achieve their goal. That was among the most remarkable achievements in all of history. I think there's an excellent chance that the Spaniards received Divine assistance. What they did was just incredible!

The Sea Hawks , The Adventures of Robin Hood, Captain Blood were all Erich Wolfgang Korngold soundtracks. And all three starred Errol Flynn.
Erich Korngold - The Sea Hawk 1/2 - YouTube
Great soundtracks all of them.
Jack Flash hit on another great soundtrack...Mark Knopflers "Local Hero".
I'll also add most anything done by John Barry or John Williams.
Goldfinger
Jaws
Local Hero
Star Wars
Too many favorites to list.

Ennio Morricone, Good, Bad the Ugly. Specifically "Ecstasy of Gold", (I imagine the sound coming from the inside of the Pearly Gates)
and
Once Upon aTime in the West.

Lots of good ones already mentioned but I've always loved the sounds of Ry Cooder's musical scores.
Also like the scores from Top Gun, Pretty Woman, Tin Cup, The Magnificent Seven, Streets of fire, Eddie and the Cruisers I and II, and Titanic

The stuff that has really grabbed me has been Carter Burwell's work for the Coen brothers, especially Fargo and Miller's Crossing. Those are both movies that bear repeated watching, but I wonder how gooe they would be, especially Miller's Crossing, without that score.
I had forgotten about Body Heat, and I can't recall the score, but that was an excellent movie. Ted Danson, and a nice little role for Mickey Rourke before he messed up his face with implants.

Various, but I really like the opening music from "The Wind And The Lion".
Jerry Goldsmith, The Wind and the Lion, Main Title - YouTube
I had the tape of it playing when I drove up to the battleship Missouri when it was berthed at Bremerton WA one day about 35 years ago. Just overpowering.

I like most of the guys we mentioned, particularly Korngold. John Barry is good if we simply overlook The Black Hole.
I like Philip Glass a lot. He did the Koyaanisqaatsi trilogy, art film, but great American minimalist music. He also did Candyman.
Klaus Badelt is pretty great.
John Williams has decades of work and hundreds of films behind him, and for good reason. However, he's in recent years been using studio writers. He composes the thematic material, makes notes, and understudies orchestrate according to his instructions and established style--and I really get why. I still like the music.

Is the movie composer John Williams the same as the classical guitarist? I have a DVD of him playing at the Alhambra. He plays guitar as well or better than any Spaniard.

No, the John Williams who plays classical guitar is not the composer John Williams.
If I recall correctly he is from Australia.

He also did the soundtrack to "Mishima", which is a little more accessible to non-fans. His '50s rock and roll themed piece for the movie is excellent.
Regarding "Koyaanisqaatsi", "PDQ Bach" (Peter Shickele) did an HILARIOUS parody of Glass's "Einstein on the Beach" called "Einstein on the Fritz". At one point, a voice sings (instead of "Koyaanisqaatsi"), "Coy hotsy-totsy".
As an aside, Schickele also did the soundtrack for the cult science fiction film (starring Bruce Dern) "Silent Running".

There used to be a show on Monday nights at 6:00pm on WCSB, the Cleveland State University radio station, called "The Music of Science Fiction and Fantasy". I don't know if it's still on or not. They used to play a lot of good film music.

Lalo Schifrin perhaps defined the cop movie score with "Bullitt" and "Dirty Harry"...a great composer. "Mission Impossible" is a masterpiece of its genre.
For me, Elmer Bernstein defined the classic film Western score. So many John Wayne films...such as "True Grit", "The Shootist", "The Sons of Katie Elder" and so many more. The all time great Western score has to be "The Magnificent Seven". He wasn't limited to the old West...consider the score from "The Great Escape". Perfect.
I find most current film scores to be underwhelming and distinctly unmusical.
I miss these great composers very much...

Absolutely!! Every time I play that video I turn up the base on the stereo. It will make you feel your heart beat. I like when they are getting off the boat at the first of the movie and the rude dude in the Daniel Boone cap tries to cut in front of the old couple. Very rousing music all the way through.

Two of my favorites, both from Jerry Goldsmith: Chinatown and The River Wild. I read somewhere that Chinatown, when previewed, was a flop. The producers changed the score to the one written by Goldsmith and that changed everything. The opening tune from The River Wild is one of the prettiest I've ever heard. It's an age-old tune that he adapted for the film.

Ray-
Which is the Aussie? I think the other is English.
BTW, it's good to see you posting again. We don't hear much from the South American members.
Is it warm down there now? We've had a nasty winter here.
