Default Forum Prices versus GB/GA uber Prices

This is not really about bashing any business. It is a chance to tell us how you do when working w/forum members on the classified guns for sale forum versus online sellers. I expect to hear that a number of replies will be about the advantages of buying or selling on Gun Broker, American Auction or other vendor.

My experience buying and selling on the forum has been 100% positive. I have only one "Want To Buy" that I could not find. And that is understandable...a left handed holster for one gun. However I got great referrals that led to good a good puchase.

My experience on Gun Broker and Guns America has been mixed. Some decent and about three or four from poor to terrible verging on outright fraud. Those have costing me over one hundred dollars lost.

What I think we are going to see is that we got a great thing doing here.

So how have you done here on the forum classified?

I've done many deals here, both buying, selling and trading. Once on a trade, the gun I received was not as nice as the other guy described. Condition, however is highly subjective and I don't for a second think that I was being deliberately deceived. After voicing my opinion, the gentleman agreed(especially after seeing the gun I sent him) and asked if he sent me a check for $100,would that make the trade acceptable? I said it would. I sold the gun here for the adjusted price,so all was well. The ONLY other disappointments I've had were those times when I SOLD TOO CHEAP! I have made a lot of contacts, and several friends, that I value highly during all of these transactions and will continue to conduct business here with no hesitation. I look forward to "meeting" new friends and continuing the relationships I've made along the way.

Got one of my "Grail" guns here and it went well.
There's always an inherent risk buying without handling from someone you don't know. Just have to do your due diligence and ask questions.
Buying here is somewhat like buying from your local stores instead of the 'big box' ( gb) to me. I would prefer doing business here.

I've bought from Gunbroker, the S & W forum, Ruger Forum, SASS Forum, and Colt Forum. No problems. I've had some RUDE responses from some people but I didn't buy from them, so no harm, no foul!

Hi:
Over the years have had two negative transactions on the Forum:
1. A gun for gun trade that the revolver I got did not arrived with the correct grips. The other party said He would mail them when He located them. It never happened.
2. A buyer purchase a Winchester manufacture loading tool that was a 160 years old. He found a bit of rust in one of the recessives and want the price adjusted. I just refunded his payment and ate the shipping.
Then there is the "Gentleman" that after numerous E-mails and photos agreed to purchase at the agreed on prices. After driving 30 miles one way meeting Him, He wanted to give a lower price ( on three different occasions.)

However these are a buyers that would have been un-happy with a free gift.

i have purchased a couple non-firearms from the forum's buy&sell, both deals were good. i truly wish i could utilize the firearms listings, but being canadian, it isnt feasible .
i belong to a popular canadian buy &sell forum that uses a trader rating system. works pretty well, but you still have the subjective "condition" problem.one mans "great condition, minor holster wear" might equal "dragged behind a truck" to me. thats where you need good photos.
in some cases i have offered/been offered a non-firing inspection period, thats about as up front as you can get , without a face to face.
just yesterday i received a knife in the mail, the guy hadnt oiled or waxed it...maybe ever. it was freezing cold and was condensing water on it from being brought in the house there were some very faint signs of rust.
i wasnt thinking clearly, and grabbed some polish and cleaned it up. if i trade it, it will be with full disclosure.
i should have sent it back, but it was so pretty ...and it did clean up 100% . probably my new belt knife ...whether i like it or not

Default Buying

I have bought one S&W from a forum member though it wasn't listed as for sale, he told me he prefers to keep his guns but graciously sold it to me when I expressed a particular interest in that gun. We agreed on a fair price, the gun arrived as described better in fact upon seeing it in person. The gun got a good home and hopefully I have made a new friend in Ky. In the process I was introduced to his local FFL who was as accommodating as any LGS I have ever spoken to over the phone, if I'm ever in the area I'll be sure to visit his store. I have purchased 3 guns on GB the first was a NIB 1006 from Lawmen's supply and the transaction was perfect . The last two guns were exactly as described and shipped promptly although neither seller bothered to leave any feedback. On GB I tend to look at the sellers feedback rating as a guide.

On this forum I think one gets a pretty good idea of the character of individual sellers from their other posts, anyone who has been here as a regular any amount of time seems to be a good egg in my opinion.

Not a lot of transactions compared to some. But, the four members of this forum I have dealt with were all "Above Board". Everyone left me with a feeling of dealing with a man of similar character as myself through the back and forth emails.
Every aspect of the transaction was as smooth as an agreeable face to face exchange.

I've purchased three guns from forum members and all three deals went well. One gun had a box that wasn't numbered to the gun, but I don't think the seller realized it. I was o.k. with it because the price was still fair.

I've bought 40+ guns on GB and haven't really had any bad deals. I couple weren't perfect, but I didn't get hurt too bad. I will only buy from sellers with a decent amount of positive feedback and I communicate with them before I mail a check.

I won't buy from a brand new forum member, or a first time seller on GB. There are too many scams out there.

I've bought and sold guns on both with excellent results. The asking AND selling prices in the classifieds have caught up to GB for the most part, from what I've seen lately.

i like buying new on GB better. I can find good prices, especially one-day sales, with no fees for using a credit card and sometimes free shipping. I think most folks on the forum price their guns too high, and the inability to use a credit card is a hindrance for me. I've also sold many guns on gb. Don't like the fees, but I only had one problem when I was new to the system. For some reason, when entering info gb automatically selects paypal as a payment method. The buyer thought paypal would automatically resort to backup credit card if he didn't have the funds in his account. paypal canceled the payment after I'd shipped. Quite a hassle. I got FedEx to return the gun before delivered. Now I'm careful to uncheck the paypal payment option.

P.S. Why would the OP be suspended?

I have bought and sold here and GB with excellent results in both places. GB will maximize your take when selling typically. My only beef here is that folks rarely read the WTB posts before they list an item for sale. I have looked for a couple things high and low and posted a WTB stating to essentially name your price only to see the item posted in the for sale and quickly sold for less than I would have gladly paid.

Both are good if you are careful. GB pricing has gotten absolutely insane!
Forum has drifted a bit in last year or more as folks who are purely into the buy/sell have discovered it as yet another market outlet.
The collector/club feeling that used to pervade the forum is less prevalent than it once was, overtaken by the more commercial side and heavily reflecting the price trends elsewhere.

I bought a grail gun here (no dash 48 that had been my long departed fathers) several 38/44s, other stuff, sold and given away rifles and items...never had a problem one. Made some good buys on GB (just got a
fantastic deal on a first year serial Colt Sistema and a Transitional Heavy Duty). I got no complaints, but the friends I've made on the forum are the big bennie of buying here for me.

I bought a gun here with an undisclosed push-off issue. S&W fixed it free of charge though.

While I was banned...

I can update this thread now. While I was banned (for multable ads no less!) and could not use our classified Forum I used that oft maligned site Armsinyourpckets. I had a nib Govt Series 1970 to sell.

I posted this photo along with one of the carton label plus a number for buyers to text me.

I swear in less than ten minutes the phone is jangling and it is sold. And sold locally to boot. I luv saving money on tranfering cost.

So what are the odds of such a lucky break for both of us?

The buyer, Ted, tells me...we talked for 40 minutes about our favorite guns and deals... tells me that his dentist said he had a gun to get rid of. The dentist wanted $400.00 for what turned out to be a Colt King Cobra (BSTS w/ box mind you). You could imagine this fellow Ted straining his shoulder trying to get his wallet out fast enough.

So on Wednesday we'll meet at my lgs. We can have some coffee, transfer the gun and swap more war stories!

Life is good. Oh yeah!

I've purchased several here. All good to excellent deals as advertised. I won't use an auction site to buy or sell guns anymore. Some say they find good deals there and they probably do but I'm always out bid on any reasonable bid that I place. I refuse to get in a bidding war with someone at the last minute so they don't work real well for me. I used to make one bid and that never won me anything.

I like buying from individuals on forums like this who generally understand what they are trying to sell and know the market. A few times you will see an inflated price but not very often.

I actually did a FTF with someone on this forum that worked out very well for me. It's just a real good way to connect buyers and sellers.

I have bought on here, GB, and Auction Arms, no problems so far. I try to be careful and see how many transactions the seller has and how his rating is. If no feedback listed I will usually pass unless there is something very desirable, then I will attempt to call the seller direct or message that I want to discuss the gun. You can usually tell if you might have a problem after a conversation with a seller. Always insist on a 3 day no firing inspection, and if the photo's aren't clear and of specific area's of interest I will contact the seller for more photo's. If a seller does not respond, and there have been a few, I pass and forget that item.

I have never had any problem either buying or selling on the forum.

I've had several very good experiences on here, plus a few great ones, none of the transactions involved a firearm. The one firearm transaction I've done was on another forum and it was a straight trade that went well. Never used GB or other sites.

Done well with GB (one deal) and the forum (one deal). Prefer to buy locally though so I can see it first. But then, I'm pretty frugal...and picky.

I always read the WTB ads. MOST of the guns I've sold here were in response to them. I enjoy helping a member cross one off his wish list. What gets me is when you offer someone EXACTLY what they are looking for at a reasonable price and they,in effect, tell you to go suck an egg. There are still a lot of guys who haven't figured out that it's cheaper to pay a little more for what they want instead of going to shows for a couple of years,or longer, searching for the price they want to pay. I guess they get into the shows for free and they hitch a ride there to avoid buying gasoline. And of course, their time is of no value either. Just sayin'.

And to avoid any misunderstandings, this is in no way directed at the fine gentleman with whom I am currently in negotiations with.

I would think you could have a better chance of finding a good deal on a specialized forum. But if you look around, you can come around decent deals on GB.

I've purchased some great things here from some great folks. I've only had one issue; purchased a holster with a guarantee, returned it and never received the refund. I didn't pursue it figuring it wasn't worth the hassle and just chalked it up to experience...
