Default Anybody still carrying service revolvers?

I do armed security in a very bad area of New Jersey since I retired in August.
Today I strapped up with my 686 as my main gun. I felt like I was not undergunned at all and I know there are some Philly cops sporting revolvers. Anybody else or know of someone else?

Columbus, Ohio used to issue J-frames for plain clothes work. Although no longer issued, they are still permitted. Besides, lots of people still carry Model 10's, just not on duty! Ivan

Here where I am the NYS Court Officers can pretty much carry what they want, and most of them I see are sporting wheelguns. I know one has a 586, not sure what some of the rest have, never gotten that close to them. I know if I was in that line of work I would probably consider a Model 28 or maybe a Model 19 and not feel at all like I was in need of something with more rounds.

I've ben trying to buy the revolvers of off of two of the security guards at the city. One carries a model 15 and the other is carrying a model 19. Everytime I see them I ask if they are ready to sell. I'll add these two to my collection as its only a matter of time before they are in my safe.

Not a LEO, but I carry one of several .38/.357's often. Have to admit my current favorite is a WC GP 100. A couple years ago I had a nice conversation with the sheriff of a Tennessee county who carried a well worn Dan Wesson.

Not a LEO but a friend of mine was and he patrolled a section of a city that has a large forested area with a large deer heard in the outlying area. His department issues 9mm and as he has to put down injured deer on a regular basis he talked with his chief and got permission to carry his own .357 Revolver (Model 28)

He has said he interacts more with deer than bad guys and wanted a better round for those occasions. He does supply his own ammo but he does get some sort of reimbursement but never went into detail how that worked.

He normally has his 9mm in a brief case in his patrol car but does not feel under gunned with the mighty .357 on his hip.

I thought all police officers did! Just listen to any news report.
"The officer pulled his service revolver..."

I retired 10 years ago but at that time my duty weapon was a Smith and Wesson Model 25 in .45acp. I never felt undergunned although I made a point practice reloads very often.

Since I retired, I've been carrying a j-frame revolver exclusively for CCW. Nothing beats it for concealability and reliability, in my opinion.

However, if I were to ever go back to work where I needed to be armed, I would carry a semi-auto, as I did on duty for the final 20 years of my tour.

Revolvers are cool, and I prefer to shoot them recreationally rather than my semi-autos, but the tactical advantage of semi-autos over revolvers is inarguable.

I understand why some of you would choose to carry revolvers instead. But in that environment, I want high capacity and faster reloading. Revolvers just don't measure up in those regards.

This is my opinion and I offer it here solely to share, not to argue.

I been carrying off and on a '76 ruger police service six in 357mag. The only thing that's stopping me now from packing it is the value went up big-time. I'm the orginal owner. And she still looks new.

Philadelphia cops that were around during the transition to Glocks were allowed to keep their revolvers if they chose. But they haven't been issued in at least 20 years

I'd love to carry one for duty, instead of a Glock 22.

First choice would be a 58 and second would be a 4'' 28

I wouldn't feel undergunned at all.

I frequently see a uniformed Oklahoma City cop working the ticket desk at the gun shows carrying a nickel plated Smith but I believe he is off duty.

I have cousin that is a Court Officer in NYC, I never asked him what he carried. His brothers were both NYPD and carried semi autos when they retired. I didn't think many used revolvers as NYS Court Officers.

I carry a bottom feeder for duty as Private Security Contractor. My brother is a LEO but also moonlights occasionally for the same PSC. He will routinely carry a revolver for his side work. On duty as a FLEO, he carries the Glock Uncle Sam issued, but prefers his S&W wheel gun when moonlighting. Of course, he qualifies with both.

I own a Contract Security company and am a Private Investigator.
Sometimes I work a Security shift when staffing levels demand it. If I am carrying openly I often carry one of my K-Frames. Either my 4" M19-3 or my 4" Pre M15.
I just got a call from a company that is looking for an escort for somebody that is carrying a lot of valuable merchandise. If I do it (we're still haggling about my rates) I will be doing it plain-clothes. I will probably carry my Glock 23 in an OWB belt holster backed up by my M340PD in my left pocket.

I often take armed Bodyguard assignments. Usually these are Women who are terrified of an abuser. I have to move in with them (which Missus P&R Fan just loves). If I am certain the abuser is just a single person I will often carry my S&W M696. I figure 5 shots is enough, and if I have to throw down on these scumbags I want them to have a clear view of those .429" hollowpoints peering out at them from the front of the cylinder.

I figure that sight alone might just make them want to be someplace else.

Yep! There is an intimidation factor there that a semi-auto just doesn't have!

(Kinda takes the "Is it a real gun and really loaded?" factor out of the pointee's thoughts, too...)

The chief of police in our small town still carries a duty revolver. I carried a Model 28 Highway Patrolman in the same department in the 80's. It's nice to see them still being used. My 28 was heavy as hell and bulky, but i never felt outgunned with it and could shoot it well. BTW- I used speed loaders and dump pouches and trained to load 1, 3 or 6 rounds, with the full tactical reload of 6 rounds being under 6 seconds. Back when cops were cops and guns were guns and we hit what we aimed at.......

While visiting my daughter in NYC we went downtown to see the sights. At the Cathedral of St. Patrick I saw a NYC police officer who was carrying a S&W revolver in his holster. I believe the date on the photos I checked was about 2009.
