Georgia Passes House Bill 60
The Georgia General Assembly has passed House Bill 60, a "sweeping" gun reform bill. Unlike other states some of the features of our new laws will be:
Removal of fingerprinting for renewal of Weapons Carry Licenses (WCL).
Prohibiting the state from creating and maintaining a database of WCL holders.
Creation of an absolute defense for the legal use of deadly force in the face of a violent attack.
Removal of the sweeping restrictions on legally carrying a firearm with a WCL in churches and bars, leaving this decision to private property owners.
Lowering the age to obtain a concealed WCL for self-defense from 21 to 18 for active duty military, with specific training.
Repealing the unnecessary and duplicative state-required license for a firearms dealer, instead requiring only a Federal Firearms License (FFL).
Prohibiting a ban on firearms in public housing, ensuring that the right to self-defense should not be infringed based on where one calls home.
Codifying the ability to legally carry, with a WCL, in sterile/non-secure areas of airports.
Including a provision that would have the state report those persons who have been involuntarily hospitalized or have been adjudicated mentally deficient to the NICS system while also providing an ability for relief through an application process to the court system for the purpose of restoration of rights.
Stating that under a declared state of emergency, all law-abiding gun owners will not have their Second Amendment rights restricted or infringed by executive authority through Emergency Powers protection.
Strengthening current firearms preemption statutes through further clarification of the regulatory authority of local governments, excluding firearm discharge ordinances(allows carry in local government offices that don't have security)
I think use of suppressors in hunting was included.

I think That is great !!!!!
I wish Ct. would have that kind of common sense!
If it wasn't so darn hot down there in the summer I'd think about moving down in a few more years when I retire.

Here is the story in The Atlanta paper.
Georgia lawmakers pass sweeping gun bill | www.ajc.com
I have absolutely no problem with the "opt in" feature of allowing carry in churches. I believe the membership of a church should have the ability to either allow or to not allow carry in the place of worship. I'm sure my particular Baptist Church will "opt in." We had a scary incident last year. My pastor and a couple of deacons have already discussed the fact that "concealed means concealed" after that incident.
I personally believe the "anti-Katrina" portion of the law might be the most important part. Meaning that the state can't disarm citizens in a declared emergency.
Proponents of campus carry are disappointed, but this is an issue that continues to have a good bit f opposition from even a lot of pro-gun people. I don't know that this will happen any time soon. While I'm generally in favor, I understand the concerns.
Another positive sign is that NRA and the state organization, Georgia Carry.Org (GCO) worked together to get the bill passed. This hasn't always been the case. There was tremendous pressure exerted on lawmakers by outside interests, including a visit to the Capitol by Gabby and Mark Giffords, calling the law "the worst gun bill in history," or some such nonsense.
I believe Governor Deal has indicated that he would sign such legislation.

Now that's what I call progressive. There wasn't a big gorilla stomping around the state house, was there?

Missouri has a new pro gun bill that has passed the senate and I'm pretty sure the house also. It is sb613. It lowers the CCW age from 21 to 19. It would nullify all federal gun laws that are unconstitutional. It also allows for each school to have a school protection officer. They can choose a teacher or someone else to carry either a self-defense spray or concealed weapon. That's all I can remember off the top of my head but there's a lot more to it. I sure hope it passes.

Also, the NRA is neutral on this bill which I don't understand.

Our state recently passed something very similar except all of our new rules start with "Can't", "Don't, "Must not", "Shall not" "Is strictly forbidden" and "Is now a felony"!

I was wondering about that. The NRA email said half the state government voted on it 38-16 and my numbers may be wrong but the other half of the state government had to vote on it The following day. I want to call them Senate and house. So, I know both sides voted and you're saying it passed, which is pretty awesome.

Tex, as of a couple of years ago, Georgia's knife laws are basically this. If it has a blade, you can own it. If it has a blade more than 5 inches you can still own it but you must have a Georgia Weapons License to carry it open or concealed outside of your property, car or place of business. The 2012 law also preempted local statutes like Atlanta's stricter laws which banned any knife with a blade over 3 inches and all lockback knives.

Great news for Georgia! When is the effective date? Living in the mountains of NC, we visit GA quite often and I do carry there.

As a resident of Georgia I'm very happy about this.
To be completely honest, though, I do not have a Georgia carry permit. I've had good intentions for many years, but I continue to forget to follow through with it. What makes it worse, there isn't any classroom requirements. But I still let it slip my mind. One day...

It takes effect July 1 if Governor Deal signs it which he says on his reelection website that he will do so.

I agree about the anti-Katrina portion being the most important.
I don't know about my church though. Out of five people who will vote on it, two for sure would vote to opt-in (one is my wife). Two I don't know about and one I'm sure would vote against it.
Don't forget all the money Bloomberg spent lobbying against it also. Don't you just love it when a billionaire finds out there are some things he can't buy.

in a declared state of emergency you would think everyone would have their second amendment rights. and legal Americans that can posses arms should be able to do so , lets face it we are all on the same side. We just want to be and feel safe, by protecting our loved ones and ourselves. Look what happened in New ORLEANS thats just not right
