Question about post count and a clarification
There was this time, long long ago, when I'd built up this number to a very large and attractive amount. And for whatever reason, the post count was at 14,461. Then the next day I opened the forum and low and behold, my once proud count was back at zero. Like I was a newby and all. So I plodded along like always, adding a post here or there and doing my darndest to not be too offensive and just live in the shadows of the also once greats like Caje or Charlie.
Then last week I realized I was fast approaching 20,000 if you added my new revised count to the old one. But since I'm retired now there's no way I could get an honest 20,000 again (it'd take 15 more years, give or take) I thought I'd just claim it now. For all I know, Caje will get there if he can somehow keep from getting banned. And back in the old days we sure had some fun discussions. Oh, well, I'll post about it again if I ever make it to 25,000.

Heck, I'll donate my post count to ya!
As much of a post junkie as I am, won't take me long to get it back.

I've read people's posts about that happening. It was before my time here. Is it copacetic to ask what caused it?

There were some good discussions back then. We seem to have lost some people here do the posts lost and some seem to be coming back finally. You had a lot of long posts that I learned from, thanks. They were informative and educational. Some of the high posters now don't say much and you can see their names in the new members page. Thanks, Larry

I remember those days. We all bowed down to Dick's number of posts and his infinite and humorous wisdom. I was nudging a mere 1000, something like 995 or so when the lights went out!
If I remember, it was a transfer to a new software that blew them to smoke.

To all you newbies out there two of the seminal moments of this forum after Lee took it over were "The Great Post Purge" and the awful "Night of the long knives". The purge was the fault of "somebody" but I unfortunately have to take blame for the carnage wrought from the second. There was a LOT of collateral damage on that one!
In any event all part of the folklore of what has really turned into a great forum!
But as long as I stay off the MP15-22 forum and don't use words like ***, ****, **** or ************ and don't talk about ********, POTUS, FLOTUS, or COITUS or show those pictures I have of Lee at the last big meeting, I think I'm OK.
Remember-those who forget history are doomed to repeat it !

You still have those pictures? The ones where someone brought in barnyard animals? So that's how we've remained as active posters instead of being with the banned. Who'd a thunk it.

I lost some along the way, too. But like you, have brushed myself off and continue to post away. I'm certainly not as prolific in the amount of posts however. Some of you guys are epic posters!
Since transitioning to mostly reading the forum on my iPad four years ago, I find it more cumbersome/bothersome to post. Not having a real keyboard and mouse makes me post less, and really keeps me from posting up pictures. I know I don't participate in the actual gun sections as much, because of this. Suppose I should get on a regular PC, but the iPad is just more convenient to carry around and read from...
Rburg, you'll always be 25k+ in my book! I enjoy your posts...

Ah, the great post count flush. I remember it well. Right now my count is just about where I was when the SHTF.
Oh well, ancient history now. Stuff happens.

Well there ya go. If you want to hide something from somebody put it in a sticky
Like we say about a few judges down here: if you want to hide a hundred dollar bill from her put it in a law book.

Actually, I did. Its because I spent so much time at work babysitting the fools who would wait until I left to really mess something up. Besides, sitting in my office I usually went undisturbed. I learned that making anyone who bothered me pay dearly had a side benefit. They just left me alone.
And then one day I had a "watershed" event. The owner of the company had a gun question. He didn't know how to get an answer so he asked me. And I told him I didn't have his answer, but I could get him one off the internet. He blanched of course, not trusting anything in his mid 90s. So I set about launching a post on the subject. And those were the days when I foolishly posted pix. And in comes one of our busy-bodies who had a lot in common with a female dog. She saw what was on my screen and dictated that "wasn't work".
Then she did something that was great from my standpoint. She made the general announcement I was playing on company time. And the company owner got wind of it. Spikes in blood pressure probably weren't very good for him, but he nearly exploded. Remember, it was his project. And he was steaming over anyone having the nerve to question what he did, and by extension what I did for him. He didn't fire her, or her boss, but he made it clear both would be gone if she ever questioned what I did again! So things were really going well for me. I got him his answer (really our posters did that).
Then about 2 weeks later my boss, the owners SIL came to my office for a quiet friendly chat. He apologized to me for making me do things that might not be strictly work related, and for all the hours I tied up doing work things that really weren't in my job description. But that he appreciated my efforts and that I was free to do what I pleased as long as the job got done. And of course keeping his FIL happy and out of everyone's hair.
From then until I retired, things were great. Still are. And the accounting ladies down the hall lived in fear of me, my office, and the owner. Life was good before that series of events. Afterward life was great. And a lot of good stuff happened. The owner passed away and the SIL became the owner. So he started cleaning out the owners stuff. To him, that means delegating things. I remember one day he brought in and old, stepped on cigar box. The lid was crushed inward so it was difficult to open. I was told to throw it out or take it home. It weighed too much for old cigars. Instead it had about 100 neatly stacked .458 cast lead 500 grain bullets. You get to guess which I did. There were endless other things like that. And all because I put in the time and effort to try to do a good job.

The only thing I remember about those days around the purge was a heated discussion about pushing wooden dowels into anesthetized animals in order to support the caliber debates. That one got weird.

Well, to me if it hijacks a thread and moves it in a more interesting direction, its worth double!
For example, someone starts a post about a plastic semi, in a plastic sheath. And he's got a photo of a China made bowie along with it, the post is almost worth negative. But say someone like Charlie comes along and posts a photo of a nice engraved N frame (with white faux ivory), and its next to a carved leather holster and belt, complete with cartridge loops for that caliber... its makes the thread suddenly interesting. And if you look closely, on the belt is a nice small knife, probably made by Randall or Loveless, it really sets it off. Or say Iggy posts a response with a genuine 80 year old Winchester to offset the ugly posted by someone with his AR, then that post is obviously a giant leap (from Neil Armstrong) for mankind.

Once again, a troublesome situation was calmed by Smith&Wesson.
I love it when a plan comes together.
