Default Thank you, Ted Turner

Those are not words you will hear me say all that much. Ted Turner is one of the largest land owners in NM. He has been no. 1 but lately some other folks have passed him,
One of his large ranch is the Armendari Ranch is South Central NM.
Most of it is located East of the Rio Grande near Truth or Consequences.
Some of the ranch is West of the river and that's where this gate is located.
This is a most historic place, the old trail from Mexico City to Santa Fe crosses it for 42 miles. Yes, it's big!
This gate is located South of the Bosque del Apache National Refuge and the ruins of Ft. Craig. Back during the period of maximum internal disagreement, sometimes called the Civil War, Ft. Craig was held and reinforced by Union troops. The Confederate Texan force invaded NM up the river from El Paso.
Some of them including Their commander Sibley had been stationed here and knew the terrain quite well.
So he knew where Ft. Craig was located. He also knew that he didn't have the time or equipment to lay siege. This means pull them out to fight. The traditional route as already mentioned was on the East side of the river, Ft, Craig is on the west side. There is a big hill on the east side, now on this ranch. Sibley instructed his leading scout force to get up on top and scout. And make sure that you are see. And seen they were.
The Union scouts fled and reported the CSA is here! The Union troops deployed out to intercept Sibleys main force. What Ensued was the Battle of Valverde. It was fought in the river and on both banks. The Confederates won a tactical victory and the Union troops went back to the fort.
The Confederates won other victories until they got to Glorietta Pass East of Santa Fe where they were decisively defeated. Then began a painful retreat back to El Paso with a still strong force at Ft. Craig blocking their way.
Ted was nice enough to allow a monument to the Texas Confederates on his private property. For that, I thank you Mr. Turner!

Mr. Turner, I believe, does a good job caring for his land. And having divorced Jane, must have admitted that was a mistake.

Have to disagree on that. Turner has extensive land holdings in Neb for his buffalo. Workers have been accused of ramming 4 wheelers into the buffalo to move them. He is not well liked in the ranch country of this state.

Mr. Turner is to say the least controversial. That includes how well he takes care of his land. He's not real Popular here either.
That's why I wanted to thank him for being nice when he really didn't have to.

On his TCM channel last night they had Johnny Carson on with some of his popular guests. One of them was Redskelton. I really enjoyed the show.

I thank him for saving these old classics. We all grew up watching these old tv shows and the movie for a Sunday afternoon and the million dollar movies as kids.

I wonder if ol' Ted could have afforded to build the monument himself?

I do like his bison burgers, though I chanced upon them only once. In Indiana, as I recall.

Here's the monument. It's made out of a 'speckled' stone. I couldn't get a shot that clearly shows the writing.

His employees have been known to haze Elk onto their property off of public lands the day before Elk season. Yes you can hunt his ranch for big $$$. Not a friend of anyone but Ted Turner, IMO.

Yes, and then he went and had a lot of them colorized - that's just wrong.

But I do agree with the sentiment.

Thanks. I was lucky. I think I had more sidelighting to bring out the inscripttion, and I believe I upped the contrast a little too.

From what I heard and the fact Jane likes to ride anti aircraft guns....I can't even imagine her up on the Hermosa old town section of the Ladder Ranch....No real roads there....Neat place if you love the old west type of places.....They had in the 70's real Buckaroo's living up there, and working the high country cattle....I guess turner has some old west in his blood...Can't imagine any other reason he would want to be so far from the masses...

Well maybe not so hard to understand after all...
