Default web browser for new puter

Just got a new to me computer to replace the old one with windows xp on it .I need to know what is a good browser to install on it ? I used mozilla Firefox on the last one. This is a 64 bit windows 7 as oposed to a 32 on the last one
What ever that means .Could use some help in a language that a computer ignorant person ( me) can relate to.

If you like Firefox its a good choice. I'm partial to Google Chrome though. I feel like it's more streamlined and user friendly. It may jut be the way my brain works though. Both Chrome and Firefox are upgrades over IE.

I too use Chrome. Living where I do Microsoft is everywhere but I finally got fed up with IE freezing up. Have never tried Firefox, Opera or Safari so can't give you an assessment of them.

I will say that when I read through the "Forum Office" threads it seems like users of IE have the most "why isn't (fill in the blank) working here?" questions. No stats to back that up, just what my perception is. I know my issues with logging in and thread updates here stopped after switching to Chrome.

Goggle Chrome. If you have an android phone the two will sync. Other engines might also but I know Chrome works very well.

Firefox.

I have it on a Laptop with Win 7 and on my desk with XP. XP support will be gone in a few days. So I have to get something, I don't know what yet. It's NOT gonna be WIN 8!.

My wife's IT geek friend will install Win 7 on my desktop but I may just finally go buy a Mac.

My old desktop has XP on it, and I'm just going to disconnect the wireless modem so it can't connect to the Internet, and use it for Word and Excel. It has the full size keyboard and the big monitor that the laptop doesn't, which makes it better for extended typing or a big spreadsheet. It can barely keep up with XP so I never even tried to load Win 7 on it. It's simple enough to transfer a single file or two on a thumb drive. I have all the files on it now going to a terabyte external hard drive which can easily plug in to the laptop I use everyday.

I just switched to chrome, there are many ways to block intruders and protect your privacy, go to tools, extensions and there are many. Here is what my tool bar looks like with some ad on's.

I use Firefox, with IE as a backup for things that only work with it.

I don't really like Chrome's interface, so I don't use it.

The only thing I don't like about Google is they gather too much of your information for their use. Block others, but not theirs. I use Firefox and it works great for me.

Firefox for me also. I used it for years using XP, now with Windows 7 it is just as good. I also have IE on the machine just in case. One thing, Firefox does not like Java.

How important is it to have Java? Isn't it used to send a lot of malware and viruses ?

I'm one of us who has XP service ending on April 8. Need to make a fast decision. If I change browsers, can I still use my present e-address?

All of my correspondents will be trying to reach me on XP. I'll have to send out a lot of change of address notices. Or, would Firefox receive e-mails sent to me on XP?

I'm trying to avoid Chrome. Bigtime snooping by Google!

That's what a lot of people say. Win 8 runs just like 7 if you want it to, you just have to decide if you want to run it like a PC or a mobile device using apps. Nothing difficult about it. I like it better than 7. 8 was built for touch screens.

IMHO, Java is vulnerable... I removed it from all my home PCs. When you update Java, it leaves the old versions in place. This means that malware can still call the older versions with vulnerabilities... There are some functionalities that use Java, like public webcams, so if you must keep it, at least uninstall old versions.

It's not like your PC is going to explode on the 8th.
For that matter, MS is extending antimalware support through the muddle of 2015... as if it ever did any good...

You can use the same email address regardless of web browser, operating system, PC, Mac, tablet, smartphone... whatever... it don't matter.

-----------------

As far as browsers, I use Safari on my Macs and PCs (rarely use PC online) Some say it is too slow and not able to customize. It's fast enough for me and I like the simple layout just the way it is.

Firefox works OK on Win 7 64 bit.

I have an XP system at home. It has a bunch of "legacy" software that won't run on a Win 7-64 machine. I'll yank out the wireless card and just use it for a floppynet file server.

Firefox is nice..... I am a little dumb on chrome, used it at work before, but it is still a little odd feeling for me.

I prefer Safari, and actually am typing this on a PC (work puter) running Safari. IE is worse than useless.... it takes up valuable hard-drive space.

I'm a diehard Firefox user. I've been using Mozilla since back in the mid 1990's - then Netscape >> Mozilla >> Firefox.

There is plenty of good reasons to go with Firefox for your 64 bit platform.

Firefox Easy download link

===

Just for info - Don't let 64 bit scare you. Most (most) of the differences are handled automatically by your O/S and the software you install.

Think of 32 bit as a 32 lane highway and 64 bit as a 64 lane highway. That's probably all you need to know unless you want to dig deeper.

Waterfox is the official 64 bit version of Firefox. Installs effortlessly over Firefox picking up all your previous Firefox settings. I've been using it for a year and it has solved some of the annoyances that Firefox had.

Only way to go.

Personally I would recommend Firefox latest update for 32 bit. It is on the release schedule which is updated about every 6 weeks. The release versions are pretty well tested by many users most of them "power users" from the Mozillazine organization. They use 3 release/update channels as the updates are implemented and severely tested before release.

The current release for 32 bit is:
Version 28
and I would recommend you only download from a mozilla site rather than one of the many download sites available - just to be sure you are getting the latest and a clean copy. They are always free!

I plan on staying with XP after 4-8-14. MS is just ending its support of XP, not making it so it won't work. I think they may face a tremendous backlash when they discover how many ticked off XP users there are still using XP. I read that almost all ATM machines still use XP, as well as a lot of small businesses.

I have been using FF since it first came out, and will continue to do so.

The April 8 deadline sort of reminds me of Y2K.................

My next computer will be a Mac!

Well since this thread has side tracked a bit to OS rather than Browsers how do you make Win 8 run like 7?? Yes it was made for touch screen but if the puter is not a touch how do you change it from apps? Is there a way.??

Like classic view or something?
