Our son had to go to divorce court in Dallas so we all jumped in the car from Roanoke, Va.

I am 54.94 Mbps up, 47.82 down, and 10 ms for ping.
(More entertainingly, I was fortunate enough to know some seriously fast young ladies back in the day...  )

A "Ping" test is a test over YOUR network to determine if your computer can communicate with other computers on YOUR network. A ping test can be as simple as testing for communication from one computer in your home or office to another computer in your home or office. Why doesn't it show me how many words a minute I can type? After that the only thing I want to be fast at is getting rounds downrange and getting the bullet and a whitetail buck to meet on time and on target. After that I suppose I can take my time.

Class III gave a very good answer.
Think of "ping" as Marco Polo of the internet. You send a "?" to a server and it immediately replies. The time to send and receive is the "ping" results.
As Class III indicates it does 2 things:
- Check/confirms for communication (if you ever wonder if a server is up you can ping it in a CMD or DOS window.
c:\> ping yahoo.com will send the ping signal to yahoo and respond to you).
- Tells you how efficient the connection is.
Ping times will vary throughout the day due to many factors like traffic, weather, etc.
Ping results for yahoo.com and smith-wesson.com
