Cheese Question for our WI Friends (or elsewhere)
Many years ago while traveling in the beautiful state of Wisconsin I was introduced to CHEESE CURDS. For those not familiar they are moist, soft, salty, peanut sized cheese pieces that are brutally addictive. When really fresh they make a squeaky sound when you're eating them. A few years ago my wife and I were back in Wisconsin and I introduced them to her. She became an immediate convert too! Here's the question.
The other day she told me if I wanted to do something really nice for her on Mothers Day I could get her some cheese curd. Great idea but where? I've never seen them in these parts and I don't know what online service might provide really good and really fresh curds. Can any of you folks advise and help me get my wife something she really wants?

Reason: add "salty"

Cheese curds...yum! I used to live in Wisconsin and had a cheese factory right down the street. The high school football team was known as the "Cheesemakers."

The problem with squeaky cheese is that it only squeaks when fresh
A favorite of mine too
French fries with beef gravy and squeaky cheese - Mmmmmmmmmmmm

Are these curds just pieces of cheese only?
I have had them but they were fried. Those are tasty.

Fried would be at the state fair, or in a sports bar. These are just cheese, with maybe some garlic, or herbs, or cajun seasoning, not unlike a potato chip.
I like to stop at the Cenex station in Ellsworth, right behind the co-op, on my way home from a motorbike ride in the Mississippi breaks. Then they are fresh, so they squeak when you bite into them. If they are a little old, I hear you can restore the squeak with a little shot in the microwave, but I have never tried it. The squeak is only a symptom; eating them fresh is the point. They are good not so fresh, too.

A Big Thanks to All
I really appreciate your responses to my cheese curd post and the PM from Jstmr. I've been checking into Wisconsin online sources and I've narrowed down to two places. I'll probably try them both. Mrs. loeman will be elated as she is not the dozen roses type of gal.
I also checked out the poutine info. GAWD what decadence! French fries topped with cheese curds topped with gravy. I'm going to try it!
Locally we have a somewhat similar source for heart disease. It's called Frito Pie. Get yourself a snack sized bag of fritos corn chips, pour in hot red chile with beef and top it off with a bunch cheddar or jack cheese. Spoon it right out of the bag! You can also get it in many restaurants and cafes where it will be served in a much more civilized manner.
And while we're in this vein (pun intended), chicken fried steak comes to mind. It's not all that great around here, but just as soon as you hit the west Texas border you can get great C.F.S. If ever in Lubbock, try the Home Plate Diner!
Thanks again guys for your help.

When I was a kid at Eureka Wisconsin, a small village, we had a cheese factory. Guy by the name of Swenson owned it. It sat on the bank of the Fox river. A few times I went in it while they were making cheese. I believe the curd was the stuff that floated to the top of the whey in the cheese making process. The waste in those days went straight into the river. Later they shut down the factory. Anyway, the best place to fish for catfish was right where the waste went into the river.
Anyone ever see the old 1957 movie, "All mine to give?" It was about a kid whos parents died just before Christmas about in the 1880`s at Eureka. Cameron Mitchell was in it. The oldest kid skated down the river on christmas day and passed out his younger siblings to neighbors to adopt. Their cabin was just a few yards from that cheese factory. There is a monument sign there. We lived walking distance from it too.

Try Vic's Daily Cafe on Osuna west of Jefferson. Pretty decent Chicken Fried Steak. Try their "Vaquero" off of the breakfast menu, but wear stretch pants.

I've driven by Vic's a bunch of times wondering if it was a good place to try. Thank's for the tip, I'll be there soon. Unfortunately I don't have any stretch pants but I do have some jeans left over from my fat period!

When you fry them (which you must do) go ahead and use the recipie for batter that comes on the bag but substitute Lienenkugel's Original beer for water and add a little paprika to the mix. I hope that you and yours will enjoy the he...ck outa those curds! AND when if by any chance they get a little old give 'em 10-12 seconds in the microwave; I actually prefere them that way especially on a Triscuit!

It is well known in the middle of Utah, where my wife grew up on it, as a child...........the cheese factory only 30 miles away.
In Reno Nevada, it is new on the menu at A&W root beer
at Kietzke and Plumb lane and is deep fried!
