Thank you for the video. Orcas have always seemed amazing to me, the ultimate predator. Those guys almost seem to be doing something akin to body surfing. I watched an interesting film on how they go to a particular pebbly beach near Vancouver Island just to rub their molting skin off, scrubbing themselves against the bottom of the bay where these nice rounded pebbles are found exfoliating their skin.

That's a nice video. I have a rule, I don't go into water where the fish are bigger than me. And I am pretty darn big. When I go to the local lake I have to give advanced notice so the DNR can post a local water surge warning to the home owners.

That is very cool!
I have had Dolphins (Atlantic Bottle nose) Surf the wake of the boat but never seen an Orca down here (they are Dolphins also, not Whales)
The ride the pressure wave of the moving boat. Just swimming they can go around 30-35 MPH the fastest in the water, some sharks ar almost as fast. Bottle nose are pretty fast and can maneuver quicker.

Years ago while in Norfolk VA going to anfibious training I was invited by some UDT ( now seals ) to go out snorkeling with them. While snorkeling looked down to see the largest ray I have ever seen, looked like he had a twenty foot wingspan. It was probably not nearly that big but in my panicked state it looked like a B29. I jumped into the boat much to the amusement of the udt team. They said a ray was harmless, I told them I would stay in the boat thanks. That was in 1957 and I have never gone swimming in the ocean again and I have lived by the ocean most of my life.

A couple of depth charges with the fuses set to zero would fix that problem.......
You know, you can't catch marlin trolling with those things screwing up your jig pattern behind the stern!!!!

The Orcas were having a ball riding the wake. What an amazing video. The boaters are lucky to have experienced it. I would have loved that!
Would have been a bit nervous as they came closer and closer to the stern, though.

Orcas, aka "Killer Whales", are cetaceans, marine mammals, rather than fish:
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j...66917471,d.b2k
Additionally, Orcas are not actually whales, but are the largest member of the dolphin family.
Magnificent critters no matter what you call them.

Dave

I'd love it! Especially if I had a camera with me! I've seen them in the wild a couple times and it was incredible. The time that sticks in my mind the most was when I got a chance to go on a tall ship (for SALTS) and as we pulled out of port we had a couple playing around us. It was breathtaking to see them breaching right in front of you and swimming around you. They're absolutely breathtaking! If only I could have gotten pictures!

LOL. I have been around a lot of Orcas and have never felt endangered. I was once running a 18' seine skiff in SE Alaska and watched 3 of them push a seal off a rock about 100 yards in front of me and then gobble it. They then swam by my skiff and the one old cow looked me right in the eye. I have never heard of a factual case of a wild killer whale killing a human.
Some in captivity have killed, I believe mostly by accident. Horses and dogs are far more dangerous.

People can be arrested for harassing Orcas, I wonder if these Orcas could be fined for harassing boaters!

Great video! I have seen the same show, except while in a 14' aluminum skiff while fishing off Vancouver Island. Back in the early 1960's they were still considered "killers" and the friend we were with was so scared, he ran the skiff right up on the beach & refused to go back out that afternoon.

I have been in the water when a sizeable charge was detonated not too far away. You can certainly feel it, and you are not in much of a mood to tangle with anything afterwards.
Though- an Orca is just a bit bigger and more resilient than a human in water........ so I think I will side with you on this one!!
