News story... media and police spin...shaking my head
I saw this news story a few days ago.
Cops find arsenal of guns, swords in Brooklyn apartment | New York Post
I'm have no comment on the guys busted which are likely bad guys. I understand the police trying to taint the future pool of jurors but can we keep it a little real.
“It was enough to arm a small army or militia,” a police source said of the bust. “These guys were ready for war.”
If I looked in my ammo cabinet and saw what they had I would feel out of ammo. Five BB guns and four real firearms is less fire power than I take when heading to the range with my grand kids. Oh no, knives and swords that make it look like the guys hang out at Comic-Con or swap meets.
The sad part of this is we here understand how silly that statement was but so many of the non-shooting public believe this BS. Heck, even a bunch of 12 year old gang bangers are laughing at that story.

Well to some people(mostly the talking heads types) anything more than having one gun is having an arsenal.
More ammo than necessary to fill a magazine or a revolver cylinder once is having a large stock pile of ammo.

Whats with the 3 cell phones in the center of the table? I suppose that's considered a weapon nowadays if you don't use it properly....

My second son got married 6 weeks ago. It was not a military wedding and there were 4 swords longer than any of those pictured there. There were 6 to 8 CCW handguns (including those on the retired LEO's) and about that much ammo. The cars in the parking lot held enough to inspire another set of NY restrictions. This was just a family from Ohio and a family from Kentucky having a fun wedding. Ivan

What caught my attention is where the article states that the police also recovered "67 rounds of 347 caliber ammunition." Whoa! Hold on there! That's enough to take out an entire city block! I mean, those 347's are devastating when put in the wrong hands!...and they had 67 rounds!!!

Oh, it's a hack piece from the New Yawk Compost? There's your problem right there.
That fish wrap is only marginally better than the Daily Nuts, and the latter makes the former look like the New York Times.

I've been hammering on this
Any time I have the opportunity to put my two cents in that anything more than 1 or 2 guns and a couple of hundred rounds of ammunition is an 'arsenal' I do. I have 4 guns and about 1000 rounds of ammunition, therefore I have an 'arsenal' and I'm 'ready for war'. Plus, I have a 'factory' set up to make more by 'reusing spent shell casings'.
When they break into a competitive shooter's house and find those thousands of rounds of ammuntion they will stroke out. And do you have a chance to explain that nearly all of that ammo is designated to be shot downrange?

I heard a guy say that when they come for his guns that he would give them the bullets first.
What was the search warrant for?

All I knows I think our local boy scout troop could whip their small army or militia.

I do wonder if the .45 magazine was a safe seven round magazine or the much more deadly 8 round magazine??? How could they leave out that important information.

I have more ammo than that In my office desk at work. And i don't work for anything related to guns.
I can imagine what they would say about me Especially when I'm a fan of AKs.
I've figured out that basically all you need is a magazine or cylinder worth of ammo. Anything else is a stockpile. Funny thing is, while this is a stockpile they will gladly stock up on anything on sale

It's NYC, what do you expect ? They'll make it look like they've nipped a major terrorist group in the bud.

Notice the "police source" is unnamed? I'm betting that's because there wasn't one. We all know we can't believe everything we read in the paper. That said, I wish all forum members a safe Memorial Day weekend as we pause to remember our fallen brothers and sisters.

I heard a sports analyst talking about the arrest of an NFL player, complaining about "NINE guns, and six were SEMI-AUTOMATICS! That's too many guns!!!"
I about steered off the road. I'd hate for that guy to see my gun closet.

It never ceases to amaze me when a story like this makes the news and the news people involved seem to blow things out of proportion. The people reporting these stories just love to say "this guy had an arsenal" and no telling what he will do. They don't have the slightest idea. I hope you guys don't make the news tonight because then we would see what a "real arsenal" looks like. I think I will google the definition of arsenal. Na, maybe not.

If a New York Police Officer ever saw my stock of reloading components he'd probably have to change his pants because he wet himself. Because if this is an "arsenal" suited to equip an army I have enough stock on hand to supply all the armies on the planet for an intergalactic war.

By Texas standards, that is not an arsenal or enough to arm a militia. It isn't even the start of a small collection. I don't want to hurt any bodies feelings, but people in NYC may be a little strange.

I was going to say that if they consider that an arsenal, there are more than a few of us here that could arm a good sized third world country!

This is what we're up against. We poo-poo this "arsenal" because we know what this really is. Propaganda, and bad propaganda at that. Responsible gun ownership, usage, and collections are not newsworthy. Shooting sports rarely get any media coverage. What is most disconcerting is that we haven't figured out how to produce a vehicle which promotes RKBA, 2A, and the positive firearms culture in general. How about a return to History: "It's the Constitution, stupid". Or, "Is Liberty really that important in the 21st century"? Perhaps a self help theme: "Is it OK if I protect myself, really"?
Until our side of the equation figures out how to market our message effectively, winning hearts and minds simply will not happen.

I guess my four 1903 Springfields would be "sniper rifles" I often thought about headlines like this when I was transporting my entire collection, including ammo, from Florida to PA in the back of our SUV.....

I'm not sure what the media would say but someone will complain about me hoarding .22 ammo.

Dang it! Don't you hate it when someone beats you to the punch on the clever comments?
Seriously, in the photo that appears to be a digital scale, a pill bottle, and two marijuana pipes in the center of the table. Eight pills and an ounce or so of weed... Still looks to be much ado about very little to me...
ETA- I do aspire to have an arsenal that would meet the approval of the Forum.

Minus the bladed weapons and the BB guns that looks like my cleaning table after a trip to the range and that is mainly because I don't take any of half dozen Katanas to the gun range.

In Missouri that display would be called a few guns, and a couple of swords...Jeez> what next? I have..went to schools with NYPD cops and I can't believe they thought that was an arsenal of guns. Sounds like justification news.......Goes to show you the populace can be hoodwinked. That display wouldn't get into our news....Maybe the for sale section of the classified...

THE REAL TRAGEDY here is that this is called *reporting*.
How in the world do they get away with it?

Boy would they freak out at my house. LOL. I got a bigger and better "arsenal" that I don't even bother to stick in the safe. That and the multiple boxes of 500 45acps and 223s stacked in the loading room with the all the "explosives" would cause a hemorrhage let alone the miscellaneous stuff. It is fun to find a couple boxes of say 44 mags forgot about.
