Rant: Yahoo Mail
Anybody here afflicted by this? Clearly written by yahoo's for Yahoo. What a goat rope.
I spent over an hour trying to download a picture attached to an email in my brother-in-law's account. After some rooting around the Web I found that this is a common issue, and it has been particularly bad since Yahoo did an update in October.
More investigating revealed that "Yahoo needs access to the Internet cache on your computer" to perform downloads. Yeah, right. That's like a pervert doctor telling his patient they need to be naked so he can examine their feet. Cleared the cache, cookies and a whole slew of trash off his machine to no avail.
I even tried Yahoo's own troubleshooting guide. "Is your browser up to date and compatible" it read. Yes to both, according to the computer update history and what Yahoo says is a compatible browser. Then they say, "For example, if you are having problems using Internet Explorer, try another compatible browser like Firefox". Umm, you just told me his version of IE is compatible, so if it doesn't work, why is it suddenly my fault. This is a usage of "compatible" that must be peculiar to the IT world.
More rooting around in the Yahoo troubleshooting guide revealed advice about possibly turning off your firewall or disabling your anti-virus software. Oh look, more naked podiatry. Much delving revealed that the computer in question may have a bad/missing installation of Java, that Yahoo also insists is necessary.
"Wiggle your toes please, Darling".

All I know is.....
Our provider had a mail service for years then started "Powered by Yahoo" and I've despised it ever since. PLUS they keep changing the format. I couldn't find the 'send' button until I saw it at the BOTTOM of the page after it had always been on top.
Yahoo...... Yuck.

Yahoo is the absolute lowest scum of the tech industry. I opened a mail account with them many years ago and didn't close it because so many people and clients had that email address. I use Gmail for almost everything and check the Yahoo account occasionally and there is always hundreds of spam mails in the spam folder and Yahoo purposely makes it very difficult to quarantine the spam. I think Yahoo makes a fortune off of the spammers.

In their own little world, this double-talk makes perfect sense.
To me, it's what Orwell called "duck speak".
Yahoo mail is free, isn't it? Sounds like it is worth every penny!

Yahoo has changed their Forums, too. I own several groups, and used to take part on several others. Now I find them impenetrable, slow to load, and impossible to manage. I'm about done with them.

I wouldn't use Yahoo on a bet. They are nothing more than data miners and sellers to spammers.

I had a Yahoo address for their finance section. I stopped using it long ago.
Now my email accounts are rather meaningless to me. My AOL, Comcast and Goggle accounts are all loaded in Apple Mail. I don't even bother to look what specific e-mail accounts they are. All works the same.

If you have another email address, forward the email to it then download the photo. Most of us have an email address with our internet provider. If not create a gmail email and use that.

I switched away from Yahoo Mail last year when I couldn't log in one day and kept getting a numbered error message. When I did a web search on the error, I found countless results where people had the same error and were locked out for weeks. I had my business mail on Yahoo, so once I got back in a few hours later, I quickly migrated out of there.
I moved over to Gmail. I hated it at first. But if you can take the time to watch some youtube videos on how to really customize it, it is the best. Takes some getting used to, but it is super reliable, the easiest mail to search past content, and very smartly put together (once you figure it out).

I keep a yahoo mail account as my "throw away" email address. Anytime an email in needed and I don't want to muddy up my real email account I use my throw away yahoo account. It's about all it's good for.

I mainly use gmail, but I too had a Yahoo account as both a secondary account (used for stuff I didn't want in my primary account, like one-time web purchases, etc) and because I wanted to use Yahoo as my home page and personalize it...to get local weather, etc. To do that, you had to have a Yahoo account. However, when Yahoo recently announced that they would no longer allow users to opt out or prevent sites from tracking them, I immediately cancelled my account.
I am currently using USAToday as my home page...I don't like it as much, but it will do until I find something better. I also have a secondary account with my ISP, which I can use for junk mail, etc.

That's what I do also. My main one goes to Windows Live mail, the secondary works in/out of my ISP only.
Another good one is mail.com. You can put up to 50mb on one Email such as photos, videos and music.

I have seen yahoo accounts compromised. Have also seen its of weird things cause by unintended software installs often things that get installed along with free software if you aren't careful with the optional extras.
I would run a full Malwarebytes.org free software scan and maybe even a housecall.trendmicro.com scan. And also check the add/remove programs for any recently installed software and get rid of stuff. May need to google search to figure of what some things are.

The thing is, I enjoy reading the news and other articles online, although with Yahoo, some of them were laughable at best. I also like having a home page that features our local weather forecast, which I know I can get from a local TV station's page, but I like it better when I don't have to go to the effort of clicking on a bookmarked link.

Never said they aren't as bad or possibly even worse. I avoid them both like the plague. Anyone who uses either one is just asking to give up as much information as possible to them about themselves. YMMV

I agree with JOHNSW go with outlook. Much better than anything gmail or anyone else has going.
When I first signed up with this internet provider (Clearwire) they had their own mail program. Then they started screwing things up with google mail program and I have hated it ever since.
I detest anything that has to do with google/gmail or whatever else they have.

...and your final statement might be a deal breaker. By his own admission my BIL is not all that computer savvy. If I tell him about Yahoo changing their Terms of Service last year so they could trawl your emails for keywords to direct ads, he will go ballistic.

It's gotten very difficult to use Yahoo mail since they hired Marissa as the new CEO. Can't easily scrub the sender's name off an email you want to forward, can't find responses among the entries in a long string, etc. And now if I check a Craigslist ad for a ball-peen hammer, soon I have 29 ads for ball-peen hammers all over the screen. My wife and kids all use gmail, but I'm not going there, either. Need to find a simple system that doesn't sell my info.

Me again, Steve. No one has mentioned the too-often down periods. Today, I absolutely could not send an e-mail, either by appending it to an earlier one or by sending an original.
P.S. HELP! I have 2 gmail boxes. I cannot access the one as the other comes up all the time. How can I access the unreachable box, please? Thank you.

My brother-in-law's computer was "fixed" by the Geek Squad. They installed Google Chrome, and this allowed him to download his pictures.
Trouble is, now Yahoo and Google both have their fists where the sun doesn't shine. I would have put Firefox on there for him. I might yet have to as a job application he is trying to fill in still seem balky on either browser.
