Hemingway on Route 66?
It has been reported, claimed and disputed that Ernest Hemingway hid out and wrote Part of The Old Man and the Sea on Route 66. Other commentators think that the New Mexico people are confused and he was actually writing Islands in the Stream.
Ernesto a number of times hid out from his wife, his ex-wives and mostly his publisher.
And one of those hiding places would be Cubero, NM. That's located about 25 miles West of Albuquerque, on old Route 66 and near Interstate 40.
He supposedly stayed in a motel called the Villa de Cubero. The hotel is no longer operate but the Villa de Cubero still operates as a store and gas station.
The motel rooms are still there and a picture of them is below.
Here's a link to an article about the subject.

Here's the store.
Not sure you can see it, on the side of the pizza sign it says 'cold beer'.
Out West in Indian country, that only means one thing.
These folks are sitting on private-deeded dirt.
You normally can't sell alcohol on Indian Land.
You are some exceptions, notably the casinos.

I always liked Papa. True enough he had some emotional, mental, and social problems and some of his writings were a bit over my head but he did have some beautiful stuff. The Old Man And The Sea is my favorite of his works. When he wanted to he could really put you into a character or a story.

I'll make a pilgrimage....
I wish I would have know that when I was out there. My wife and I made it a point to get our kicks on old Route 66 in a neat Thunderbird. We had the best time out there. It's a shame that so much of it is like a ghost town after being like the Silk Road for the first half of the century. We made it a point to go by Frank Lloyd Wright's place in AZ and I'd have loved to see where 'Papa' penned on of his great books. ESPECIALLY, Islands In the Stream, which holds me in awe.

Know the area well, as well as the owners of Villa de Cubero. I spent the first 5 years of my LE career patrolling east of Grants. Cubero and Villa de lie in between the Laguna and Acoma Pueblos. I fact I stopped in at the store over the Thanksgiving Holidays last year. Brought back a lot of memories. Many years ago ( the 70's) the owners told me the story of the Hemingway visit.

Very interesting! I didn't think he went west, but doesn't surprise me.
Not far from my house in Northern Michigan is a town called Kalkaska, I stopped in a bar there called the "Kal-**". Across the street is a restored train staition. I stopped in for a beer, and I asked about Hemingway, as he was supposed to have summered in the area to fly fish for trout.
The barmaid pulled out an old photo album that had pics of him there. He supposedly got off the train, walked across the street, and spent a lot of time there.
Last time I went in there, its changed hands a couple times, there is no album anymore.

Remember EH was often hiding from his wife- ex wives and publisher.
The story goes - Ernest was staying at the La Fonda Hotel, Santa Fe.
He talked to his publisher in NYC and assured him that several chapters of the new book were ready to be mailed.
But he needed money. Please wire some to the La Fonda.
The money was wired and the publisher checked his mail.
No chapters. He called the La Fonda only to be told that EH had checked out just after He received his wired money.
Then he hid out in the wilds of NM.

Hemingway often hunted in Idaho with Gary Cooper.

For the record:
The shotgun Hemingway used to commit suicide was a high grade British Boss double. It is NOT the gun he is pictured with above. The family decided that the didn't want that gun to end up in circulation and in someone's collection so they had it cut up and destroyed.

Hemingway demonstrated many signs of dementia and Alzheimer's Disease, such as intense paranoia and unfounded fears before he committed suicide. I have read stories about the family's destruction of his Boss suicide shotgun.

I had read that he used a W.& C. Scott and Sons double. They found pieces of it in the blacksmith shop in Ketchum where they destroyed it after the suicide.

See: Hemingway's Suicide Gun | Garden and Gun
In A. E. Hotchner's excellent biography of Hemingway, I think he mentions that it was a Boss (I no longer have that book, so I can't check to see for sure). But then Hotchner was in no way a "Gun Guy" and probably was just told by someone it was a Boss and he let it go at that.
