Default Visiting in Memphis. What to do?

A British acquaintance is going to visit three US cities in the next few weeks. She is a Professor Emeritus of History and a very sophisticated person, of the gentry, with Royal acquaintances and friends in the Churchill family. I want her to think well of the USA. She will have American friends as hosts and companions.

I've cautioned her about Chicago and New Orleans, although I think the latter city will be safer and more friendly. There will surely be enough dining and entertainment places mentioned in guide books and by her hostess.

But she will be in Memphis. Is there anything to see there, maybe Civil War museums? Anywhere especially good to eat?

I think we have some members from there? Any general advice?

She is looking forward to seeing 4th of July celebrations, which I've asked her not to hold against us.

1. Eat BBQ...LOTS of BBQ.

2. Be very careful. My family is from Memphis, and while I'm in GA everyone I'm related to is still there, so the info is firsthand:

Memphis has a HUGE, VERY bad gang problem.

Elvis, baby, Elvis. I went way out of my way in a thunderstorm to see his digs. Worth the trip to see.

Chicago is fine - Stay near The Loop and/or Grant Park.
Grant Park area has lots of world class museums.
It's the South Side that you AVOID....

Memphis - Graceland (if she's into Elvis)
Ribs at the Rendezvous - Mmmmmmmmm

Check with Memphis Tourist Center or whatever they may call it. Is she interested in Elvis, I know you said she was sophisticated, but you don't know until you ask. Memphis is like any town, there are bad parts and good parts.

Its gotten SOME better, but not much. About 6-8 years ago it was the city with the most gang violence per capita of every city in the United States. That doesn't get much press because it is relatively small, compared to Chicago and LA, so the totals aren't as impressive.

If she is interested in War Between the States history I highly recommend she visit Shiloh NMP and the Corinth Civil War Interpretive center.

Both locals much more conducive to personal safety.

I'm from Memphis and visited there last year. Memphis has a huge crime problem. If she has to stay there, take a hotel/motel in Bartlett which is a suburb to the east. Leonard's has the absolute best barbecue in the South. For the best pizza you have ever tasted, have dinner at Colettas Restaurant (be sure to try the Cannoli for dessert). Elvis' home, Graceland, is located on Hwy 51 south and is quite interesting. Hwy 51 in front of the property looks like a highway in some 3rd world country. Don't have a vehicle breakdown in any part of Memphis.

So, you have two super places to eat and Elvis' home. Thats about it. I will never go there again willingly.

I have not been to Memphis for years but lived there for quite some time. Hopefully someone with more recent knowledge will correct this if necessary. If your friend knows anything about American literature, a trip to the Peabody hotel is in order. Its famous lobby with the Peabody ducks has shown up in Faulkner novels and Tennessee Williams plays. In addition, it is located near Beale street and the justly famous Randevous restaurant (order the dry ribs).

Geeze...I forgot the Peabody! My parents were married on the roof there, New Year's Eve, 1941...

I recently took a car vacation with my son from NY to Jacksonville Fl. We detoured inland as far as Nashville on the way down. I wanted to go to Memphis to take the Gibson Guitar factory tour. It was just too far out of our way to justify. My 20 year old kid had no interest in Graceland. I couldn't really find much else of interest (for us) when reading up on it.

When in Nashville you could have toured another of the Gibson factories...they have three. The third is in Bozeman, MT.

Lived in Memphis all my life, nearly 60 years, one of these days I'll escape. Town is going downhill fast, people are moving out.

I don't care what you've heard or read The Rendevous is not the best BBQ place in town, I wouldn't even give it an honorable mention. For ribs Cozy Corner can't be beat, it's in a fairly bad part of town but worth the trip, The staff is quite friendly. Also good are The Commissary in Germantown, Central BBQ at the original place not the one on Summer. Brads in Bartlett, Three Little Pigs on Quince, it's a little neighborhood BBQ joint. Corky's sells more BBQ than anyone in town and though it's kind of touristy it's darn good. Fat Larry's in Bartlett, good steak too.

Graceland is a hoot, especially the trophy room.

Sun Records, see where a young truck driver lit the fuse that started Rock and Roll, July 1954. Never understood why The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame museum was in Cleveland when everyone knows it started in a little recording studio on Union Ave.

The Peabody ducks are worth the visit to The Peabody, a grand old Southern hotel built in the 20s. They say the Mississippi delta starts in the lobby of The Peabody.

Memphis Redbirds baseball, The Redbirds are the Triple A farm team of The St. Louis Cardinals. Most of The Cardinal stars have played here. Good baseball at a nice park.

Really nice zoo.

+1 on Coletta's, lots of good places to eat.

Beale Street parties pretty good.

Stay away from South Memphis. Stay away from Frayser, warzones. If you have a carry permit put it to use, Tennessee honors most states but check to make sure.

I was born and raised in memphis and now live next door in Bartlett. The two towns share a common border, but are worlds apart.
memphis ain't what it once was. They still have some great tourist attractions. Graceland, Pink Palace, a wonderful zoo, Sun Studios and beale Street. And then there are the casinos just south in Mississippi.
Most of the so-called famous Bar-B-Que places are highly over rated. The Rendevous is an overpriced tourist trap and the food ain't that good. Usually the smaller local places are the best. Being in Bartlett, I can highly recommend Brads for pulled pork and Fat Larry's has the absolute best ribs.

Stay in the tourist areas and you should be alright. DO NOT WANDER OFF THE BEATEN PATH! Keep your head on a swivel. Try to be in your hotel room by dark. BTW: these days its a plus if you can speak spanish.

Well if she is a "Professor Emeritus of history" and friends of the Churchill family then she should think VERY highly of US already, since presumably her native language isn't German.

Just thought I'd ad that memphis also has one of the best trauma centers in the country. They get lots of practice. Hopefully you won't need it.

Graceland, Graceland, Graceland

Peabody Hotel, not just for the ducks, but anybody who is anybody who is visiting will be seen in the lobby of the Peabody.

Sun Records

Beale Street. the best time I ever had there was in a place called The Blues Cafe. Absolutely kickin' blues from some guys I never heard of before. I stayed until closing time at 4:00 am.

Mud Island is supposed to have a really cool hydrological model of the Mississippi River, but it has never been open while I was there.

I have had some good bbq just by looking in on places that seemed interesting. I don't remember their names, and have ho idea if I got the bestthat could be had.

Thanks, guys. I'll probably send her this topic link.

I have no idea why she'd go to Memphis. It may be her US friends' idea or the Elvis connection.

Obviously, being a UK subject, she can't have modern handguns or carry here. I doubt the US friends are licensed, either, but will pass on the danger issues of all three cities they chose.

Default Fellow on a plane noticed...............

........that the guy setting next to him was very agitated. He asked "Sir are you OK?" Guy said, "I have just learned my company has transferred me to Memphis, and I have heard how dangerous it is."

The first man said in reply, "Don't worry, I live in Memphis. Just find a home in a good neighborhood, get the kids in a private school, be careful, and you will be OK."

"Boy you are making me feel better already. What do you do in Memphis?"

"I am a tail gunner on a bread truck."

Memphis is to the blues what New Orleans is to jazz what Nashville is to country.

A big Plus One for a visit to Beale Street.

And a Sun Records T-Shirt!

Memphis is like any town, there are bad parts and good parts>>>>>>

Don't believe it !

In Memphis, you can call 911, ANYTIME, if you have a flat inside the city limits. The cops will sit with you, until you get the tire changed.

Tell her to go to that hotel with the Ducks-kinda like High Tea only different. But to be honest-If I was going to choose three cities to show off th best of the USA for your friend, Chicago, Memphis and New Orleans would probably not be the three I would choose

I would lean more towards Delcambre, Port Aransas and Orange Beach.

They did have a small custom shop in Opry Mills mall where the craftsmen were behind glass, and you could watch them work, but I don't believe it was reopened after the flood.

Stay at the Peabody for the twice daily duck march. But insist on a room away from their red neon sign.

Eat BBQ t authentic joints like Cosy Corner, not restaurants.

The zoo is small but very nice and has pandas.

Mud island has a model of the entire Mississippi River that you can walk and a small Civil War museum.

I'm originally from New England; I could give her a lot of suggestions about history there, mostly from 1775-78, which she might not find enjoyable, but it sure is interesting.

Some years back, I took to tour to the Trinity Site in NM. One of the families waiting for the tour to start spoke with a decided British accent. I'm sorry I didn't speak with them but I hope they found the tour enjoyable, and an example of what our country could do at war. I think the spaciousness of the country here would be very impressive to anyone from Great Britain.

Go to the Peabody and see the ducks.... you know you want to! Then have the red beans & rice @ the Rendevous...world famous.

B.B. King's club on Beale Street is a must.

.....and as mentioned before there is a lot of great BBQ.

Back 40 years ago when I lived there Charlies Rendezvous was the best ribs in town plus he had a wonderful display of guns in shadow boxes on the walls. I believe it`s still there .

In addition to the obvious already posted, with my top three being Sun Records, Graceland, and the Memphis Zoo, arrange a tour of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The story of Danny and Marlo Thomas and the hospital's origins is amazing, and the hospital does the best work on the planet.

Trust me there are many places in town better than The Rendevous. Heck last time I was there I couldn't even get a buzz of the numerous pitchers of beer some buds and I went through.

I don't know about what the Rendevous was like 40 years ago.

Go to a Topps BBQ but order the Cheeseburger. Nothing PC about it, best in town.

+1 to St. Jude, +100000000

If a person use common sense, most of the time you will be perfectly safe. There is always a "chance"..

Mud Island
Sun Studios
Graceland of course
Botanic Gardens
Dixon museum
Brookes museum
Civil Rights Museum
The Zoo is awesome
Pink Palace (real close to zoo)
The Metal Museum is interesting too .
Beale Street
Peabody Hotel

Some good advice has already been given on dining. I'll throw in "Gus's Fried Chicken". Its delicious !
Colletta's BBQ pizza, the original restaurant is better, but in a terrible part of town.

Latest warnings are Red Light robberies; one murder so far. And while the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center at the Region One Medical Center (formerly the Regional Medical Center at Memphis) is indeed one of the best in the country, they can only do so much.

Another Brit in this country. We kicked 'em out twice. Why do they keep coming back? And you are taking her to Memphis? Dang man why? Memphis is just a river boat landing that got big. All the low life **** is still the same since Memphis stated. Send her to LA.

I'm not with her and did not plan the itinerary, nor do I know who did. Some friends of hers. New Orleans is the only city of the three that I MIGHT have approved. I would certainly have included a good Texas city and probably Los Angeles, with reservations.

SKIP Memphis !
Other parts of Tennessee have a "Saying": If the Lord was going to give Memphis a flushing, He would stick the hose in Memphis.

You want histroy? Boston Mass, Charleston Sc, Virginia . Savannah Ga.

Not a good plan for single lady to visit Memphis.
The 'rewards' are not worth the risk.
Sounds like she needs to bring her platinum plastic and visit Santa Fe.
Sophisticated? Arty? Crafty?
Hell yeah! All The way up to the Green River!

My wife and I went to Memphis last year as part of our now annual "southern vacation". I planned the Memphis part specifically because my wife has always been an Elvis fan. Graceland is a day long trip if you want to catch all of it. When we were there, there were a lot of people from Europe visiting. We were there just before the annual gathering of Elvis fans, which is sometime in later July.

We stayed at the "Heartbreak Hotel" because it's adjacent to Graceland, but that's a personal choice. There is a BBQ place right up the street that has a limo service. The food was good, not terrific.

We went to Beale Street during the day, don't bother. It's a seedy area with a lot of panhandlers. Might be different at night, but we didn't go back. When we were there, Sun Studios was closed for tours.

We had dinner at the Side Porch Steak House in Bartlett. Great food, reasonable prices. Driving into Bartlett from Memphis, the change was immediately noticeable. I mentioned to my wife that I was surprised that there wasn't a moat between the two.

As far as I could discern the only two reasons anyone would go to Memphis was to see Graceland and go to the FedEx HQ. Other than that, neither of us saw any reason to ever return.

As a friend of mine from MS says, "Memphis is a mean, mid river city where the inhabitants don't like each other and will demonstrate that at the drop of a hat." He's from Jackson, so he knows mean.

Memphis is one of the most visited cities by "The First 48" production crew, which should tell you something.

We liked Nashville a lot more.

Not an option for you friend, but I carried everywhere we went in Memphis. I don't think I'd go there if I couldn't.

I have heard that Memphis is referred to as the "Mogadishu of the South".

I was a not-too-smart-young-Marine stationed at NAS Millington from January 1972 to about February 1972. Used to walk downtown as late as midnight to and from the Memphis bus station. Had my first and last moonshine on a Sunday night in Memphis. It was potent!

I later found out had bad Memphis was back then and I was lucky.

To be "fair" to Memphis, all major urban centers are rapidly becoming more dangerous every day. Crime stats can be manipulated ( and often are) but bottom line the crimes themselves tell the true tale.

Strange -
I've been to Memphis, Chicago, and New Orleans and have NEVER had a problem with the locals.... Enjoyed myself in all three places - Especially Chicago and NOLA.
CANNOT say that about Miami or Lost Angeles though.

Find out which parts of towns you shouldn't go - Then DON'T GO THERE!

Common sense, but a visitor renting a car and trying to remember to drive on the right side of the road can easily blunder into a bad area. I'm hoping that her US friends will do the driving.

We had the driving discussion, and she commented on how many places do drive on the left. But all were former possessions of the British, most still in the Commonwealth.
