Default Do you use the factory case?

Assuming a new gun comes with a nice plastic case, do you use for transport etc, or do you leave all the "factory" stuff in it and store it away?

Just wondering!

I keep the extras in them and tote the gun in a rug or a bore store.

I transport the M&P empty and padlocked in the original case, and I transport loaded magazines with extra ammo in a separate padlocked pistol case. Some LEO's don't know the current Illinois laws, so I transport with extra precautions.

Interesting question. I have kept every case I ever got. Yet I store them with the factory papers, lock, spent case, etc in a dark dry place. When I look to buy a pistol I seem to give more preference towards a seller that offers the box and papers, yet I never use it. :?:

Why do you suppose we put value in something we never use? I use a 4 pistol range bag when I go to shoot. The plastic case stays home and clean. Maybe its because I can carry 4 pistols in the space one takes in its own case??

No, I put my guns in Bore Stores and then stored in the safe that way. When I go to the range, I just pull the gun-in-Bore Store and put them in a large range bag. I've got one range bag for the guns, and another for the ammunition.

I suppose the original case would work well if you were only taking one/a couple of guns, but I usually go to the range with at lease 6. My cases are stacked in a closet, and are never used...

I think it's because we either want the complete package as it came from the factory, or the presence of all the packaging and accessories shows that the current owner values the item and therefore hasn't abused it...or maybe both!

Im too set in my ways to spend extra money to tote a firearm with---with one exception. I use the ugly black case my .45 came with BUT, will be trading it for a custom wood case. Sometime down the road after I get my new lap top--and now another A.C. unit--im going to see about getting one of those customwood cases made by the Gent who had a Spartan image emblazoned on his.

Just like in the collector car market, you get (or pay) a premium price for a car with all the original factory manuals, protecto-plate and a full, documented service history.

I leave all the factory stuff in the case, and store the case with all the rest of them.

If I change anything on a handgun I've bought -- grips, for example -- I save the original part, and place it in a labeled plastic baggie. I figure this will save my sons a lot of time and trouble years from now...

I set the box and accessories aside. I carry the revolver or pistol in either a holster or else in a zip up type gun case of some sort. I like the Boyt cases. JMHO. Sincerely. brucev.

I still have every one of them but I carry so much junk that I need a regular range bag to hold all the ammo, magazines/speed loaders and shooting accessories.

I do the same for storage. I use ankle length for the little guys and full size for all the rest. For transportation to the range I wrap each gun that I take in a large cotton T-shirt rag. This way I can get everything I need in one small heavy canvas tool bag.

I only have three guns that came with a plastic case. All the rest are cardboard. The three that I have (Md 649, SIG P239, Colt Combat Elite) are way too big and bulky to be of practical use other than safe storage.

Recreational guns, mags, parts, specialty tools... go in these

MidwayUSA Tactical Pistol Case

Carry guns stay in holsters and anything associated with gun stays in original box.

I save the boxes for eventual resale.

I use a Bulldog range bag to transport to the range. In it I use rugs or gun socks.

Back at home...once the safe got too crowded I started to put all the guns that have cardboard boxes into those boxes stacked in the bottom. In that way I can fit all the guns in one safe.

Truth be told I need a new or another larger more secure safe.

I almost always shoot what I'm carrying on me so it's only 1 gun transported on me. I hate, despise, would rather have my teeth pulled. .spending the day cleaning guns or even gun. So hardly ever bring more than one. However, when I do I just throw them in a school bag and go.

They are stored sitting side by side. No socks, no silicone nothing but another gun to the left and to the right.

If it came in a box I'll throw it aside till I sell it

It looks like I'm in the minority here!

And I'll state for the record that I'm not very sentimental about guns or the boxes they came in! Or any other inanimate object, for that matter.

If it was a gun I planned on selling down the road, I'd keep the box. The rest, I start for 1 dollar on ebay, and the highest bidder gets it. I usually get 20 bucks or more, not including the shipping.

I sold the box that my Model 39 (no dash) came in for $30, bringing the amount I paid down to $370. That's my second most carried pistol.

I traded a Victory that I had bought for $275 for a LNIB SS Ruger GP100. It came with Hogue grips, plus the originals, plus three HK speed loaders. I sold the box and docs for $21, the original grips for $22, and kept the speed loaders. I was then into the GP100 for $232, and I traded that straight across for a beautiful 3rd Gen. Colt Detective Special. I traded with a young guy who had no use for a .38 Special! Allowing $10 each for the speed loaders, which I kept for my OMM, I'm into the DS for $202!

So whatever I sell the box and other stuff for gets figured in to the bottom line for the gun.

I make nice presentation style boxes for my favorites, usually from higher-end wooden cigar boxes.

For me personally it isn't about being sentimental at all. It's about original factory packaging. I don't store guns in the plastic cases but when I sell one I like to be able to have the original box. Like someone else said, it shows you cared about the piece.

I personally have no use for presentation boxes. I don't display my guns for anyone to see. If I have a close friend who I know appreciates guns I show that person. I have no desire for someone who visits my home to see a gun in a presentation box and then have that person blab to people I don't know about what they saw in my home. That's how stuff gets stolen.

Now days--with the ammo situation--all one would need is a bag the size of a sandwich zip-lock bag.

+1 with Beemerguy53 for the same reasons:

I have a separate plastic drawer cabinet (Lowes) for the 1911 magazines, revolver small parts, extra grips, speed loaders, etc. Guns are always securely stored in the Liberty safe. Transported to/from the range in a custom fit, Bianchi leather holster (safety & protection) in my range bag along with everything else that I will be using.

I like the old cardboard books but the plastic ones?

Seems like they just add to the clutter and I wish I had the guts to just throw them all out!! But no, I still save them. Should I ever sell a gun I of course can not find the correct box.

Yes.

I took all the foam out, and use it with a small combination lock to secure the pistol when not in use.

I feel better if it's in the case.

I've actually been pretty pleased, it works very well. I suppose it is not the most secure thing in the world, though, being plastic and all.
