Default Some of Dad's wisdom

I posted yesterday it was 20 years since my Dad passed away. Been remembering some of the things he told me. I'll share a few, and look forward to hearing some of yours.

Dad was a master craftsman. He told me "If we don't take the time to do it right the first time, how will we ever find the time to do it again?"

Dad loved pie, as do I. He said "No pie should EVER be cut in more than 6 pieces". I like that one.

I had a very active dating life, starting from the time I was 15. He told me "If you can find somebody just HALF as good as your Mother, marry her."
He really liked the Lovely Missus P&R Fan from the day he met her. I always wish I would have asked him if she was half as good as my Mom? I mean, what could he say and not get in trouble with both of them?

These are just a few of Dad's words of wisdom. Will probably think of more later. What are some you remember?

Just remembered another one.
He was talking about the Women I was dating. He said "Keep in mind, someday they will look just like their Mother".

Fortunately, he was wrong about that one.

My dad was a very wise man, but not inclined to give advice. He was a journalist and my mother had been a teacher before I was born, so what they did was gently but effectively edit the dinner table conversation of my younger siblings and me for grammar and pronunciation.

Dad taught us to love language and baseball, and especially books, by example. He and Mother taught us to appreciate all kinds of music, and to be actively involved in church. (I got away from that last one for many years.)

But a master cabinet maker who lived next door to my grandparents in Tennessee gave me a one-liner that has stood me in good stead in many areas of my life. He said, "Time spent sharpening your tools is never wasted."

It's why I write, and try to learn something new, every day. And it confirmed in a sentence the example my father set for me every day of his life.

My wife recently reminded me of one of her father's sayings: "If you live long enough, you're going to get something wrong with you."

My Papa said one time " There are always two folks that know when you do right or wrong, even if no one is around to see you...that's you and God."

Remembered a few more.

Dad occasionally would fix the plumbing. He showed me how to put two pipes together and said "There are three things to remember: Keep it clean, keep it clean, keep it clean".
He also said there are only two things to remember to be a plumber: "@$$# don't run uphill, and payday's Friday".

Last one for now: "Measure twice....cut once".

Dang I miss him.

Great stuff guys!

My dad had many sayings and among those, these two stick out:

-"Never underestimate the stupidity of the human race."
-"Wear you life jacket."

The second statment was made any time I was engaged in water sports involving boats, canoes or things that were supposed to float but, it so became the "phrase" that was made any time I was engaged in a dangerous activity.

My dad had many sayings. One that I like a lot is "time is your most precious commodity. If you spend a dollar you can always get another one. But when you spend an hour or a day it's gone forever and can not be replaced. Spend your time wisely."

"You never get a second chance to make a first impression."

"No one ever learned ANYTHING while they were talking."

"Make darn sure you are in the right and then stand your ground no matter what."

"People are complicated. Don't be too quick to judge others until you have walked a mile in their shoes."

"Always pull your own wagon. Don't depend on others to do for you."

But the most effective and (now) my favorite was not really a saying at all and involved no speech. When I was pushing my luck and getting on his nerves he'd give me a look and the pull off his belt. He had a way of pulling it off that made it sound like a machine gun being fired. Every time the end of the belt passed through a belt loop it sounded like a rifle shot. That never failed to get my attention and correct my behavior immediately.

Man, did that bring back memories of the dreaded "strap" (Dad's belt, as it was called in my household growing up).

I suppose parents who make that sort of "silent threat" today might end up having to answer to child protective services.

My grandfather came to America in 1903 from Italy at 4 y.o. He and I were very close. He was the person in my life that influenced me more than anyone else.

His favorite pearl of wisdom about building things was..."If you cut it twice and it's still too short, pack up your tools and go fishing".

His favorite political saying was..."Let anyone who wants to be president become president. But at the end of his term shoot him. That's the only way you'll get the right man in the office".

My Pop never laid tools on the ground, always on something or leaning on something. He said you only have so many bends in your back in your lifetime, don't waste them picking stuff up off the ground. Pop was a bricklayer also and come to find out, he knew what he was talking about. Bricklayers backs do not last as long as you would like. I still preach the same message to my boys, even now that they are grown. Take care of your back!

When we still had the farm my dad would say" son go get the cow and enjoy the walk". I learned a lot about nature walk back with the cows back to the barn.

The one I remember the most is, "Never stay on the defensive for more than 10 seconds."

That quote has a lot of implications, whether you're in a fight, either verbal or physical. Dad's homespun wisdom always seemed to pay off.

My dad said that if I gave my "word" I must always keep it. Because if a man doesn't have his word - he has nothing at all.

And that my hand shake should be as good as a contract.

He was as honest as the day is long - and always did what he said he would do. He could never be bought "at any price" and held fast to his principles.

Thanks dad! RIP

"Don't ever do what I just did."

Dad had just spilled a whole thermos of smoking hot coffee into his lap, and boiled Big Jim and the twins.....

I was so taken aback, I never even started drinking coffee! True story. I left part of the story out; you know- the "F@%*, the HOLY #&^%, the SONOFA&@#$!!

All were properly used in their context, I can assure you.

On the other hand, I wrecked a truck, and all he said was "It's called an accident because it wasn't an 'On purpose'." And that was the end of the lecture.

That one stuck with me.

He wasn't my dad, but an old guy that I worked with that kinda took me under his wing told me one time,
"Son, Their's two kinds of women in this ol' world. Their's good ol' bigguns and big ol' gooduns."
I never really knew what he meant by that, but I have always remembered it.

My dad was the second greatest man to ever walk the earth.

It's funny though: the only "advice" I can remember is something he told me one time, that his uncle (whom he admired) had told him, and that he thought was worth passing along.

He said: "If there is something you really don't want to have to do, sometimes if you wait long enough, you won't have to do it."

It's not like he was a procrastinator or a slacker -- quite the opposite. I guess this goes more to the idea of letting things take their course before deciding whether to step in......

In Swissdad's workshop hangs still a handwritten and dusty cardbord with this:

"If you think you've lost all, don't forget that you still got the future."

My dad who is technically my stepdad has never given me any wisdom. But my Grandparents shared a great deal of wisdom with me.

But my birthfather did indirectly give me some wisdom without saying a word.

The Wisdom he shared, Don't Drink Alcohol and DON'T cheat on your WIFE.

My birthfather is an alcoholic and he cheated on my mom constantly.

Two more things one of the many pieces of wisdom that Grandpa shared with me A mans got to do what a mans got to do.

A big piece of wisdom my grandma shared with me. the tiniest bit of faith can move mountains.

P&R's comment about the wife looking like their mom someday. I have found this to be true over 50% of the time. Usually when they don't it is a good thing. In my own case, we had been married 15 or 20 years, I came home from work on a Friday, said hi, and started grilling food that was setting out. I set the table for Wife and I, 2 kids still at home and M-I-L. Came in with food sat down to table and waited for M-I-l to come to the table. Wife wanted to know what I was waiting for, I said her mom. She informed me he mom was out of state at her sister's all week. Wife had changed cloths while I was grilling, I really thought her mom was here, my kids thought I was loosing my grip on reality. I swear it was the same face that greeted me in 1976 when I picker her up for our first date! Ivan
