Default "Stress Management"is a college course?

I was talking to a guy I know the other day in the locker room at the YMCA. He is in his 60s and is a professor at a State University. Was asking him what courses he teaches. One was "Stress Management". This is a COLLEGE course? How in the heck can you teach a 22 year old how to manage stress? I told him I have been self employed for almost 29 years. Stress due to cash flow, employees, clients and Government regulations are my daily companion. The only way I can relieve stress is to solve whatever problem is causing it.

I think he thought I was crazy.

Anybody have a magic potion to relieve stress?
Jim

Thumbs up

A good 100 yard range, a M1 carbine, a Mod-21 and a couple boxes of cartridges for each.

Yes. Two fingers of a good anejo Tequila and one ice cube usually does it for me.

My former employer required all management to take stress/anger management classes (8 hrs) every year. It helped a lot - especially when dealing with the unions.

Why not stress management as a college course? Several years ago a friend of my sister took some summer classes to help his grade point. One of them was advanced drivers ed. So why not stress management?

We have many veterans who are well adjusted to normal life.
I'd think that they would be better qualified to teach such a course than someone who never left academia.

I'd really rather they taught college kids to write clear, coherent, grammatical sentences. Preferably without using spell check or resorting to plagiarism.

But that's just an old man's dream.

Jim, that was not a nice thing to do. You have now given the poor man lots of stress. He will be stressed out worrying that someone else will figure out the cure for stress is as simple as you thought, then he will be out of a big bucks job.

Courses in stress management are taught by corporations all the time.

Stress management isn't about "strangling the livin' ---- out of someone who deserves it". It's an entire gamut of information that helps folks develop methods for recognizing, coping with, and developing action plans for minimizing stress.

And stress isn't just about crises. It's also about planning; taking folks out of reaction mode, and recognizing how to plan your work to avoid stress points. It's a proactive method of management, and it's a necessary tool for being a good manager, whether of people or processes.

It's also about life style. There are stressors in our lives which compound our work and other living styles. Things like diet, exercise, and sleeping habits which contribute to stress. Just how much does not enough sleep contribute to stress at work, and how do you cope with stress, so you don't sleep well? What about the foods you eat? Does that pizza with everything on it help you or hurt you? What about that dozen cups of coffee? Think that coffee doesn't affect your judgement or stress levels?

Management isn't just about the numbers. It's about recognizing stress points in advance; recognizing constraints, and using those things as assets.

I took my first stress management course in 1986, when the concepts were just developing. It opened my eyes and improved my personal and professional management styles.

It's about time stress management is offered as a for-credit course.

Subject: an eight-step stress management technique Just in case You've had a rough day, here's an eight-step stress management technique recommended in the latest psychological texts.

1. Picture yourself near a stream.

2. Birds are softly chirping in the cool mountain air.

3. No one but you knows your secret place.

4. You are in total seclusion from the hectic world.Picture yourself near a stream - Stress management

5. The soothing sound of a gentle waterfall fills the air with a cascade of serenity.

6. The water is crystal clear.

7. You can easily make out the face of the person you're holding underwater.

8. See? you're smiling already.

8 -)
