It has been a long time since I shot a handgun. Too long due to medical issues which are now on the mend. So my shooting buddy and I went out and shot steel today.

Looked like about 8 to 10" targets at 15 to 50 yrds. Lots of fun to plink at with 22's. The 50 yrd one was hard to hear but you could see it move with the hit and get a little tink from it.

I was gunning with my Beretta 87T and Browning 1911-22. The Beretta has a red dot sight on it and put the dot on the target and press the trigger you would get a nice plink sound back as a reward. You could slide from 15 to 50 yrds instantly and hit every time. If you missed it was do to jerking the trigger since the gun was right on. Always a fun gun to shoot!

The 1911-22 rewarded me if I used good skills and pressed the trigger. If you started slacking and jerked or did any sort of non 1911 style pressing of the trigger you were going to miss. Fun gun to shoot but it does require focus to hit well.

So the tale of the tape is 1000 rounds fired, Winchester 40 grn 22lr plated LRN's. Not a single failure to feed or fire from 12 different magazines.

So looking at the 22 LR stash, I have enough bricks still I can do this about 10 more times till I am into the good stuff (CCI standard velocity for the 41's).

It has been so long I have just plain forgotten how much fun shooting a 22LR pistol is!

You're lucky you didn't get held up and mugged . They would of left your guns and wallet alone and just stolen the .22 ammo .

Heh.........must be nice. All I have left is 2 bricks of .22LR and there are none to be found anywhere around here. I have 1 brick of Remington Thunderbolt and 1 of CCI Blazer. The thunderbolt is an extremely dirty bullet. Not quite as bad as the bulk golden bullets but close so..........I wouldn't feel so bad about using them up but still, I'd like to restock before using what I have.

Sounds like a LOT of fun. I'm way jealous. Anyway congratulations on gettin' out there and gettin' it done!

I can't even imagine shooting that much in one sitting. Even 22s. I am done at 100 rounds or so. I have a good friend who used to buy 44 Magnums by the case and shoot 1,000 rounds in an afternoon.

Glad to hear you're on the mend and having a good time with the 22s. I like taking my model 17 and Sig 1911-22 with me when I go shooting anymore. Still cheaper than centerfire and it's slowly becoming available here again.

Things have definitely eased up on the supply front. Several Internet sources have them readily available and lots of fine folks here are providing links to these sources. In Ohio anyway, it seems some Mexican brand "Aguila" has found it's way north. Big local independent Vance Outdoors has it for about $40 a 500 round brick and it's sitting on pallets by the register.

I think nothing of shooting 1000 rounds in a sitting. That is kind of high but par for the course. I normally shoot around 700 to 1100 rounds per session at the range. As a reloader that is a good fun outing and not that expensive. I will say 1000 rounds of hot 10mm or 357 maximum can be a bit hard on the wrists though. I remember when I got my 10mm Les Baer I put 750 rounds it in the first day and it tore up my hands pretty good!

I find for me it takes about 200 rounds to really get in the groove and focus. I am then good for around 500 to 700 rounds depending on the gun, ammo and weather until I start to lose it. Then I usually spend about 200 rounds just having fun. You know, plinking at the berm, splashing water up in the mud puddles or shooting at clay pigeon's on the berm. Just fun plinking. This gets me to my 1000 rounds on a normal session.

Actually, considering the costs of 22LR ammo today (I am shooting up my stock pile I bought several years ago at around 11$ a brick) it is cheaper to shoot 38 Super or 9mm than new 22LR. I figure maybe Tuesday I will go out and dump 1000 rounds of 9mm if the weather is good. I need to get the 210's out and run them as it has been a while.

Like I said above, I am shooting up old stock. Years ago Midway had 22lr on sale and so I bought cases of it. I was trying to maximize the value of shipping so I just stockpiled the stuff. I still have several cases of Federal Target Match that are unopened and 2 more cases of Winchester high speed that I was shooting like yesterday. It was $11 a brick for the good stuff back then.

I will say there was a lot of cat fur and lint on the top of the ammo pile. I need to dust the pile more often.

Enjoyed .22s since I was a kid.

All the new rimfire handguns and rifles introduced into the market the last few years has really breathed new life into the fun for me. I feel like a kid with new toys!

As far as getting bored after a few rounds... maybe the shooting environment has something to do with it. What Eick describes is how I shoot. If I was limited to punching paper I'd probably sell most of my recreational guns.

When I want to feel rich I take the two bricks of .22 I have stashed away and dump them out on the bed then pick up handfuls and let them run through my fingers while laughing maniacally. Then, after I've gotten it out of my system, I carefully pack them back in their boxes and lock them back in the safe until next time.

When I want to feel old I take out one .22 round and gather up the kids and tell them about the good old days when we could get 50 of them for .99 cents and we'd just shoot them at anything - cans, bottles, frogs, flies - and we called it plinking, an old slang term for wasting ammo for fun. If I'm in a good mood I'll let them hold the round and pass it between them while I talk. At the end I take it away and tell them we have to save that round because they're so precious and then let them go outside and shoot 9mm because it's cheaper than buying .22.

On Saturday my youngest daughter drove down to visit. I have some surgery coming us and she wanted to make sure I'd be alright. Saturday afternoon I took her to a local range where she very happily went through a brick of Norma 22 LR shooting whatever targets I put up on the stands. She did the same thing yesterday with the Norma and some Federal Champion with the copper washed bullets. That little 15-22 worked perfectly with the ammo I had on hand, Norma and Federal Champion.

She doesn't get very many opportunities to visit. She enjoys going to the range, so I am always looking for .22 LR ammo. Sometimes I find an occasional box in a LGS... but normally it is not available or if it is, the price is through the roof, i.e., scalper levels, so I leave it to collect dust. I have been able to find ammo at Cabela's, Midway and Gradys. Most of it runs about $.09 delivered to the house. I try to buy some every month. Over time it builds up.

Rumor is that from time to time Walmart has ammo. I've routinely checked the three Walmart locations within 70-80 mile drive of my house. The clerks say they are not getting .22 LR ammo. I check the various internet ammo search sites and have not found any local ammo. I have found ammo on-line via various links posted at the 15-22 forum. This has really been a help in finding ammo at Cabela's. At one time earlier this year you could get Blazer delivered for a little less than $29/500rds. Nowadays, Cabela's charges tax and the shipping is high. If and when they have Blazers, the delivered price is right at $38/500 rds., which is still far less than the scalpers try to charge.

I stopped in the local WM today and took a casual glance at the ammo cabinet. One shelf was stacked full of CCI mini-mag. Call 911.....

I added these this year because they are falling off the Kalifornistan "not too unsafe" roster & Ruger has no plans to add or renew any pistols due to the microstamping requirement.

The Target model had a bad extractor out of the box and the 4.5" slabside is just so much fun to shoot!

Replaced the bad extractor with a Volquartzen & have burned a good brick + between testing the new extractor & chewing the centers out of targets with the slabside.

Ruger pistols are a great. I have two 22/45s and a MarkIII.

This is my latest edition. I can't imagine getting bored shooting it.
