Saving a life....
....well, not really; BUT....Friend came by tonite and allowed as how he had left a quantity of gutted but unfrozen fish in his wife's BRAND NEW Mustang overnite until almost noon the next day.....temperatures ranging from hi 70's to mid 90's
Guy is a vet, tank driver (Iraqi Freedom) and one of the finest officers that worked for me....
Needs help getting the fish odor out of wife's NEW car.....things are a little tense around his house, as you would expect !
Suggestions?

A couple of drops of mercaptan liquid and you will never smell the fish again, you did say she needed a newer new car, didn't you?
j/k about the mercaptan, don't do it, not even for a second.

Stunk up a brand new Mustang .....
have him do a bank job, take his time, get arrested, and be safe from the wife.
seriously man, defilement of a Mustang is a hanging offense in some parts.

Take a good quality 5 gal bucket and pour 2 gallons of vinegar in it uncovered, lock it in the trunk overnight (24 to 48 hours would be better)
should take out most of the fish smell. Don't forget to remove the bucket before driving anywhere or you'll have a mess in the trunk.
Pete
Place the bucket wherever the fish were - I assumed in the trunk but if they were inside the car, put the bucket there.

The subject left fish to spoil in a MUSTANG.
I don't think it wise to entrust this one with something COROSIVE that he must remember the following day.

I would chop up the fish and use it for fertilizer. It is now inedible.
Oh, for the car, take it back to the dealer and say it came with the smell. Let them deal with it.

Years ago a guy drove a fine old about a 50 chev pickup to work. I asked him about it and he said it had been his dad`s back in Oklahoma. His dad was old and lived alone. He was driving to town on a brushy old gravel road, had a heart attack and run off the road. The brush had sprang back and it was like a week before he was found. I was polite and said nothing but he must have seen my quizzical look. He went on to say, aw, it aint bad, cleaned up good. When I turn the heater on ya might smell just a little something but it aint real bad.
Maybe thats why he always carried some sen sen with him.

After you try all of those other remedies:
Trim a bunch of pine tree boughs off of some trees, enough to fill the trunk, and leave them in the trunk for as long as you can - repeat if necessary.

Spend some "quality time" with the guy right away. After all the above remedies fail, he's gonna be "history".

I would take it to a detailer, whatever leaked out of the bag is in the carpet or seat. A good profession cleaning would help alot.
Or, you could tell your friend to take his wife to the ford dealer and buy a new mustang and trade the stinky on in!!

I was raised that if you let a mess of fish rot like that, you deserved whatever the little woman would dish out.

If all else fails, take it to the dealer and have them treat the interior of the car and trunk with their ozone machine. How do you think they get the nasty smell out of the used cars they sell?

I don't have any first-hand experience with Atmosklear but totally agree that you need a scent neutralizer . . . not a scent mask.
What I have had excellent experience with is a similar product called "OdoBan". We left several packages of hamburger in our RV freezer and accidently disconnected both the electric and LP. We didn't check on things for several months . . . not a pretty sight or smell. The OdoBan neutralized the smell and left things smelling pleasant in short order. I highly recommend it.

Years ago some close friends lived next door. The lady was going through some mental issues. Long story short, she had told me she was "thinking" of going someplace, didnt have her mind made up, but if she did go she would tell me to check on the place etc. I already had a key as I and her husband were best friends and worked together. He was out in the field for our outfit.
A week or so went by and I didnt see or hear from her. Finally I checked out the house. I instantly got the dry heaves! I thought she must be dead, the house was all tore up and so dirty you couldnt believe it. I braced myself to find a DB and covered my mouth and checked the bedrooms. A freezer was in a spare bedroom with the door open and the unit had quit, all meat defrosted and rotten. It was the worst smell I ever experienced and I couldnt quit heaving. I got some mutual friends together and they tried putting coffee grounds in the air cooler and that made it somewhat bearable to clean out the house, which about three of my friends wives did.
We had a high security type job and supposedly even wives werent suppose to know where we were at times. I went through channels to contact my bro and at the same time he was trying to get ahold of me. His wife had tracked him down and decided to visit a relative of hers that was near to where he was. She went totaly out of her mind and he was in big trouble with her. They had to specially fly her to their hospital. I believe it was Addison`s disease? It was the first bout with it and it affected her several more times through the years. Anyway, the coffee grounds saved the day.

Febreeze
Febreeze is a miracle, plus anything else you can think of.
One time I THOUGHT I had another bag of oysters in my truck when I was carrying them in. Some time later they started smelling rank. I looked in my trunk but didn't see anything. Finally I found it way back behind my spare tire in a place that didn't think would hold anything. It was rough by that time.

If you have access to an Ozone generator, place it in the car and run it for several hours.
This will remove the odors without leaving behind a chemical smell.

Saving a life....
Empty three or four gas cans into the the car and then lite her up and walk away.
In all seriousness baking soda is an amazing product. Throw a box or two around in the car, let it sit a few hours and vacuum it up.
