Default Fess Parker/Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone:

Hoping this works and if so will be back later to fill in the blanks/

Had to come back to be able to add some text to this. Part of a past order from this pace was missing and I got a message about it a few days ago. They told me I could get a refund or choose replacement images. I chose replacement images. And get this--they said I can choose three replacement images for their loss of one image--I really like that. :-))

The first photo is THE origional and a one of a kind original (though the image itself isnt one of a kind--I can splain later if asked?) and that image is from the opening sequence to the first season of Daniel Boone. Boone is about to fire his rifle at a charging bear. This image was used in 1964 by the Chicago Tribune-sooooo anyone reading the Tribune at the time they were advertising the first season of Daniel Boone--would have seen this image in their newspaper. This is a one copy image-meaning there are no other original images made of this image-makes it one of a kind. However, there will be original COPIES of this image as used by other publications--which are also one of a kind in themselves--but not THE image.

I THINK image 2 is a Daniel Boone image--its too small to tell and I cant go back into their folder to see a larger image of it-since-once a pic is spoken for--they delete it. Also was the image the Chicago Tribune used when advertising Disneys Davy Crockett--back in the 1950s.

The third image is of Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen in: Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier. Buddy Ebsen unfortunately--never appeared in the Daniel Boone TV Series--or at least as Parkers sidekick. Parkers sidekick(s) in Daniel Boone-were Albert Salmi as Yadkin, Dallas McKinnon as a Tavern owner--and of course Ed Ames as Mingo--the Indian friend of Boone.

My pal out in La Jolla had some dealings with Mr Parker and told me he was the nicest guy anyone could imagine. He only had good things to say about him.

When I was a kid, I never missed Disney when they'd be showing something with Fess in it. Especially the episodes with "Mike Fink, King of the Keelboaters".

Buddy Ebsen was his sidekick in the Disney Davy Crockett series. These pics are from both Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett.

I can't see for sure, I can't enlarge it, but I think you will find that in that second picture, the rifle is a modified Trapdoor Springfield.

Not that takes anything away from Fess.. Met him at Cheyenne Frontier Days many many moons ago. Right fine feller he was.

Somewhere there's a photo of my five foot three inch mother being presented a silver tray by six foot four inch Parker, when she won the Archway Cookie prize for her oatmeal raisin cookies. She said he was a real gentleman--I think she was a trifle smitten.

Back in 81, we barely missed meeting him somewhere in L.A. I cant recall where or why? but it was before we ran into James Cagney.

I wishI could have had a larger image to grab these from, but they only sent me a thumbnail that I couldnt enlarge. I also had some like that from: The Scarlet Coat--but couldnt get those to cut and paste.

the guns that fess used in the series were built by Hershel House of Woodbury ky. he also built a personal gun for Fess Parker.

while i never met Mr Parker, i Do know Hershel and he is a class act and true genius when it comes to building the old guns. and he speaks highly of mr Parker

i do not want to hijack this thread but after 50 years of gun handling and collecting, the sweetest gun i ever picked up and have been lucky enough to own is a iron mounted left handed 32 cal Tenn squirrel flintlock that he built and is identical to the one in the article below

That version was quite a bit longer than the one I remember before the tv show. I guess they cut it down to 30 seconds or so, same song and singer though.

My favorite Davy episode included Big Mike Fink King of the River. I remember Clint Walker was Donna Douglas's date for a while. What a lucky duck.

I cant remember the name of the actor who did (Bogarts Sierra role) but sometimes-it was line for almost line--from the movie. I need to re-watch those eps again. I found that at least several were directly inspired by classic movies.

BTW--found a bigger but--repo image of:

I cant remember the name of the site but-it was an excellent one that was about everything to do with the Daniel Boone TV series. Somewhere newr the bottom? they had all three versions of the theme that you could listen to. The words were changed slightly from season 1 to--season 2 and I think the last version was played starting with season 5?? I cant remember?
Original Daniel Boone Opening - YouTube
Here are the themes. As im using library computers-I cant actually hear these so I might be pasting a duplicate. This one though, is billed as the first version:
Daniel Boone Theme Song 1964 - YouTube
This one should be version 2:

Ballad of Davy Crockett:
Fess Parker - Ballad of Davy Crockett (1955) - YouTube
Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone mix:

And: Farewell To the Mountains--which was a song he sang while at (The Alamo) in the Disney series of course.

That's a hard movie to watch. I like Fess Parker. But he's the enemy. So I should hate him. But I like him.

Be like watching Duke Wayne play a Nazi.

That's a good one. My favorite outside of the The Alamo episode--is the one where they fight the Creek Indians and their Chief--Red Stick.

When I was a child, we would take a train from Chattanooga to Atlanta. At the Union Station, sitting in the corner was the General, it was rusty back then and forgotten. I can remember the drive wheels being way over my head!

In 1959 the engine was removed and taken to the L&N Louisville shop to be restored for the upcoming American Civil War Centennial...
After a long lawsuit that went all the way to the US Supreme Court, Georgia won the case over ownership from Chattanooga.

It had been over 50 years since I saw my friend at the old Union Station. I told the story to my Daughter and without me knowing, she talked to the Museum Curator at the Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History at Kennesaw, GA, and he said I would be given a personal tour!

I got to see my old friend...

The General, Tonya, and me...

Back then if you didn't watch Davy Crockett you were UnAmerican.
I can recall my coonskin cap, also had a plastic toy version of Old Betsy.
Fess Parker was a class act.

Very nice all around and thank you for the photos. Ive always had an interest in railroad stuff-older trains etc. Id love to see The general sometime. I remember watching the Buster Keaton movie of the same name about 30 years ago when played on A&E NEtwork. Before then, id never heard of it or the actual raid where it was stolen. that engine bespeakes volumes of history.

I always thought the "cow catcher" on the front was metal...

I used to see the General at the Chattanooga Union Station too, but the last time was well over sixty years ago. Nice to see the pictures.

The Texas, which was the chase engine, is located at the Atlanta Cyclorama building within Grant Park in Atlanta, GA.

They don't often let people inside the fence for a really close look at the General, so you were very lucky. When the museum asked my friend, William Wardrop, to put on a display of his models and modeling techniques, they gave him access to crawl over, under, around and through it so he could make an accurate model of the General, not as it appears now, but as it was back during the Civil War. That model is normally on display at the museum. You'll find a photo on the following web page:
Land Vehicles - Steam Noir

If you're interested in this kind of thing and traveling through the Atlanta airport, Bill has a smaller exhibit on display now at the domestic terminal. I currently have three of the models sitting above my computer, shown during the Kennesaw exhibit, that I'd lent back to him for that show.

Fess was a very nice guy. He grew up in west Texas and was a good friend of my high school buddy's family. (That friend now lives in CA and stayed in touch with him until Fess died.) Fess was about 8-10 years older than we were but we all used to enjoy his visits to Brownwood from their home in San Angelo. This was while he was in college and before he went to CA.

Fess was hitting the big time with "Davy" about the time we were graduating from BHS in '54 so for a while coonskin caps replaced cowboy hats in the cafes and at football games. Another of my buddies from HS still has Fess's Model T Ford in his antique car collection.

Fess and his family also have a large winery in CA. with some excellent selections. If you haven't tried them, you should.

Bob
