Sadest Country Song...All dressed up to go away...he stopped lovin her today
Alan Jackson - "He Stopped Loving Her Today" at George Jones' Funeral - YouTube
A sad song is only meant so we can reflect and be happy at our lives. The great architect knows...

Of course Alan's version was sung at George's funeral. But yes, Possum's version is the best.

Read the wikipedia post about that song - Possum didn't like it much before it became a huge hit.

I agree about cousin Trace's "Arlington" (he's a distant cousin who doesn't know I'm alive). It hits hard.
I wish Cash hadn't recorded "Hurt". It's not just sad, it's profoundly depressing to an old fan like me.
Johnny Carson once asked Mac Davis what was the saddest song he had ever sung. He answered, "I'm Drinkin' Christmas Dinner All Alone". I thought it was really funny until I found myself doing exactly that.

''The 8th of November'', by Big and Rich.
I can't copy it on here, maybe someone else can.
My eyes are too runny.

I'm old enough to get a discount at most places; Hurt is one of the best videos ever , in any genre.
The song was written by a 30-31 year old Trent Reznor for his band, and was about depression and maybe addiction.
Big John took it and made it his own 6 years after it was written.

While I love it, I don't hear "He stopped" the same as ya'll.
The man's finally out of his misery, ain't he?
That'll likely be my only release too...

A song Tammy Wynette brought out around 1976 was sung by
Kenny Rogers and Dottie West later.. and I believe I like it better?
What do you think...

I do love that song!
Just never thought of it as a sad song.
That is a honky-tonk, sing-along with the singer song.

Sad if you consider the words but I love the old Lefty Frizzell tune. Gone, gone, gone.
Another is George Jones's "The King is Gone".
I pulled the head off Elvis, filled Fred up to his pelvis
Ya ba dab ado, the King is gone and so are you.

"Skip A Rope"
I remember this song from when I was boy, I felt it was written just for my family.

Sorry, but I consider Old Shep by Red Foley to be the saddest country song.

Sorry to pick nits, but Steve Goodman wrote the song and recorded it with John Prine. He and Prine worked together quite a bit.
The only reason I mention it is that Goodman died far too young (leukemia) and doesn't get near the recognition he should.
He also wrote "City of New Orleans" which Arlo Guthrie recorded.
If you haven't been exposed to Goodman, there are a good number of videos on youtube featuring him. Excellent stuff, a brilliant writer and player.
While I'm on Goodman/Prine, a vote from here for sad song: "Far From Me" by Mr. Prine.
