Default 70+ mile round trip to trade with an idiot

I have a S&W 57 in the classifieds listed for sale or trade (specific interests). This morning I drove up above Gainesville, GA to meet a member for a possible trade. He had sent me photos of a 30+year old CZ 527 .22 Hornet in a synthetic stock, Leupold 6x scope, Harris bi-pod, and a spare magazine; and a nickel snubbie S&W 30-1. Both of his guns appeared to be in good condition. We agreed I might owe him some money in the deal.

The CZ rifle stock had been cut down about 2", the scope/rings,both magazines and bi-pod were missing. He told me he had recently moved and could not readily lay his hands on the missing items but would certainly put them in the mail to me when he located them.

His wife insisted he keep the 30-1 so he did not bring it, instead he had a milky nickel S&W 10 SB snubbie to swap.

Rather than choke him, I thanked him for wasting my time and gas and drove off. I had no desire for the S&W. The CZ needs a stock ($150.00), scope ($200.00), bi-pod ($75.00), two magazines ($100.00), rings ($65.00). I will not bother to name him, he is more of a lurker than a poster. But if someone shows up bad-mouthing me today, this is the reason.

To be closer to the Georgia mountains is to be closer to God---I think.

Bummer. Did you at least split the drive? I never drive more than halfway.

Glad it was a nice day for it though.

I think he drove more because he mentioned a cardiologist check-up near noon. He was driving a Ford Fusion with dealership paper plates out of NC. I wonder if he retired to Murphy, NC. Gainesville is about as far north in GA as one should go for good, reliable medical care for a human. I did no ask if he was a GA resident as I knew when I saw the CZ the trade wold not happen.

It was a nice morning for a drive, but I rescheduled my physical therapy appointment to meet this guy. I like to knock P.T. out early, the late afternoon appointments are rough.

I have driven farther to avoid the possibility of seeing Merrill at lunch.

Shame that happened to you. Some are just not to be trusted. I bought from a member who failed to disclose a push-off issue with the revolver. I noted that in the feedback.

And feralmerril is right, come out west to where there is BIG country...70 miles is nothing. NM is the 5th largest state (after Montana). If I want go anywhere, I expect at least a 2 hour drive, except Santa Fe is about 1 hr, but I don't like to go there.

Here is the text of my ad:

"Blue, 6" barrel, TH, TT, TS, RR, WO, no box or papers, clean bore and chambers, round count unknown as I bought it used. Slight muzzle wear both sides. Dimple at the top of the sideplate. Prefer a FTF sale $900.00, but willing to insure and ship to the CONUS $950.00.
Would prefer to sell it, but I do like CZ 527 rifles and am still searching for a nice Sig P220/225/228 pistol marked Herndon, VA. I like S&W 30/31 revolvers."

So far I have been offered a Howa, a S&W built by Howa, a MiniMauser MK X (Yugoslavia and Czechloslavakia are practically the same country), a Ruger Mini 14 in .222 (he wanted $600.00 cash from me too), several S&W 10 and 36 models, a very abused Colt DS .32 NP, and a Coonan. Today was the first time anyone offered me what I actually asked for.

Many years back I wanted to restore an older Corvette and was looking for a 1963-67 Coupe. Found one right here in MT but an easy four hour drive away. BEFORE driving the 200++ miles, all of it on two lane roads...I asked the seller about a dozen very specific questions regarding the shape of the car. Will it start right now? Last time it was driven? Etc.

The seller ASSURED me it would start right up, had no other issues, etc.

Drove the four hours .....took the turn to the Ranch and there...among the abandoned farm equipment and deer crashed pickups...sat this 65 Corvette. With BUSHES growing out from underneath it. Been parked THAT long. All tires weather checked and FLAT.

Interior totally ruined by pack rats.

The guy then says.... "I figured if you came all this distance you'd take it". To boot he wanted about 20% more for it than a road worthy, all matching, restored 65 would have cost me!!

A LOT of idiots out there.

I answered an ad on Arms List for a 4" Model 10. The guy stated that it had been reblued and that the pic was a stock photo off the internet. But his gun looked just like it.
I was uncertian, but the price was good. Plus he was local, so it was a short drive.
Yep, the gun had been reblued. Very poorly and they blued the hammer and trigger too.
The poor guy was absolutely convinced that because it had been reblued it was worth more.
I simply informed him that his gun was now only worth about half what he was asking and left.
You take your chances. Sometimes you win, most often you lose.

Frank237,
He sounds more like a shyt, than an idiot. The internet has opened a world-wide market, but exposes us to a higher number of criminals and a-holes.

Most everyplace out here's a road trip, a 70 miles round trip's "local."

I've only had problems with just one forum member.
He ordered a holster and I went ahead and made it so when the check came I could send it out right away.
No check and no replies to my PM's. I'm just glad I didn't send it and trust him for the money.
I wrote that if he just decided to get a holster elsewhere, that's cool, just let me know and I'll just add it to my inventory.
No response.

My standard answer is I would trade you straight across for a S&W model 16.

Close, he said he was a retired federal LEO. He did not mention fishing, though I believe he was a sailor. He sure cussed like one.

It did dawn on me much later that if he was seeing a cardiologist perhaps his meds were out of whack and so was his demeanor.

I once drove 20 miles, when I got there the guy said he was mistaken, his revolver was a Uberti and it shot 40 S&W or 10MM. He said he still needed 225.00 for it. It was a 1st Generation Colt SAA 4 3/4ths" nickle in 38WCF. I didnt mind the drive.

Default People do that.....

No skin of their nose, unless you rub their face in the ground. Not a long trip but a person told me they'd buy an electric scooter from me and we agreed on a price. To make it easy, I proposed to meet her in front of a store in a shopping center that was by itself near the main road. Waited and waited. No sense in taking up more of your time........

Nothing gained the only loss was time and gas money. Your ok. We don't know unless we look right.

Many years ago I advertised, wanted Suzuki ts 185 bike.
A guy calls me up that has a '80 Suzuki GS 750 L for sale for $250. We drove 60 miles round trip to find this bike in excellent condition. We started it right up. I got it for $150.

We have to look our we'll never know?

I would of known about the CZ had he sent a current photo instead of an old one. I don't blame his wife for wanting to keep the .32, but he should of called if he had to substitute another handgun.

I've had a few bad experiences buying of the internet (Craigslist and ebay). Most of ebay has been good but there's almost always an unpleasant surprise on CL. I don't do it anymore.

I've made several trips like that. I've also made a few that were much more than worthwhile. Like others have said, you don't know till you go.

Colby, I'm really sorry you had to be inconvenienced. On 3 occasions I'm aware of, after reading of a member looking for a certain gun, you either posted or PM'd them (me) to tell them it was in a LGS in your area. Folks are not all upstanding like you, Colby.

It's something put into the gene pool by terrorists. There's always someone who will say their buddy bought one better than what I'm selling for less. I politely tell them: "Get your buddy to buy one for you". The conversation usually ends after that!

Thank you for the kind words. While this guy irked me today, the fellow who claimed Yugoslavia and Czechloslavakia were practically the same country still has me laughing.

Folks love to cling to lofty terms to price their treasures (as in, "What a treasure, let's bury it."). At a show in NYS years ago, among the contents of a guy's attic was a VERY abused 94 Winchester with an outrageous price tag. His reasoning: "It's a pre-64!" Yeah, but it looked like it had been tossed around in a cement mixer...

Hey now it was more than a fair trade. He failed to mentioned I offered my vintage My Little Ponies figurines and a one armed He-Man action figure.

So I guess that's why I have not heard back from you about the Hi Point and bag of magic beans.......

My favorite offer for trade was; 60 slightly used chain link fence posts, with concrete "anchors" still attached at no extra charge and I pay freight from Ga. to Ohio. No Thanks!

As for driving to get what you want. My F-I-L drove from Central Ohio to western Iowa pulling a car hauler to get a 1946 Chevy pick-up, that was parked for 5 years in a field. and was very pleased to get it (but he knew that from the beginning). Restored it and it is now his pride and joy. Ivan

Don't feel like the "lone ranger", happens to the best of use from time to time.
GPS tells me where gun stores are along the way and I always bring a cigar for those long trips.

You just had to mention this, didn't you? I passed up a mint DS in .32NP 4 years ago because it was a .32. But then I've never really understood going down in caliber in the same model when capacity is the same. Price was $475, BTW.

You have to remember, you/we are heavy into guns. Most people arent and arent on top of brands, conditions etc. Most people might inherit a gun or whatever, and all want to fantasize they might have a super rare valuable gun. SOMETIMES they are actually right. Its because of those rare times that many of us will drive a long ways or whatever to check out the story. I am willing to bet also that most of them are knowledgeable in other areas of stuff like artwork, watchs etc that I am dumb on and have no interest in. Yet if I found a old watch I would be hoping I had hit a rare valuable jackpot too.
When I was a kid we had a old very poor couple live next door. He gave me a old pot bellied mandolin that he said he played at dances long before that, probley in the 1910`s or so. I couldnt play a note yet moved that around with me for many years as sort of a decoration piece. Finally I traded it to another friend on some gun deal. Later he sold or traded it to another guy that was a musician and also played a mandolin. After the deal was made he told me the mandolin was very valuable and was lined with a sea turtle shell inside that was outlawed for many years prior. Wonder what that would be worth now? It did look fancy and you could see shell all inside.

I remember once when I was selling a Model 19 4-inch (wish I had it back) and I told the guy who was going to meet me locally that he needed a NYS permit and that until the gun was on his permit it was going to stay with me. We were going to meet at a neutral place and before he got there he called me on my cell phone. I had driven 30 miles and was waiting. He told me he needed the gun tonight. It was 5pm on a Friday afternoon and unless the gun went on his permit, the sale would be illegal. I told him this. I stated that we both agreed he was going to look at it, and then get it put on his permit the following Monday. I told him I wasn't breaking the law for anyone, and he replied he would just pick something up in NYC where he was headed. I gave a couple cop buddies his info in case he came buck up this way again trying to buy a handgun illegally.
I was once offered a rifle as a trade in for one of my handguns. It was supposed to be a near mint condition Remington Model 14 carbine in .35 Remington, a gun I wanted for a long time. Well, near mint was drilled and tapped, with four additional screws because the first four were off center. Then he drilled a hole through the front of the magazine tube for a home made sling and the stud on the back look like Stevie Wonder drilled it. I informed him thanks for wasting my time with a gun that was the exact opposite of mint. He was upset because he wanted something like $800 for that gun and he didn't like it when I burst out laughing. They are certainly out there, and the scary part is they are multiplying exponentially every day.

I saw of those yesterday, pre-64 Model 94 in .30-30, the stock looked like a chew toy and the rifle had been drilled and tapped and for the most part it looked like it was rode hard and put up wet. All for $600 and it was a 50's gun, not even a saddle ring carbine.

A couple of years ago I answered an ad for a Rockola M1 carbine for $500.00. I drove to Gulfport,Ms., about 50 miles from my house to look at it. When I got down there the guy told me a gun store had offered him $600.00 for it. I told him to go sell it to the gun store and drove off. A week later the guy calls and tells me he'll take $400.00. I drove back down there and bought it for $350.00. I wouldn't have made either one of these trips if I didn't already have something else to do there.

I might be interested in the magic beans!
I have a opossum that was crushed by a 1957 Mack house moving truck (it was a really slow opossum) I'd be willing to trade.

What do the beans do?
If they produce gas, I'm not interested. I already have a mess of those.
