Default Seeing the 'cool' thread......

After seeing the thread on 'cool'. Who are the coolest real people in American History? People whose actual lives were cool, not just an author's writings or actors. I may not follow my own rules if someone was that cool:

George Washington
Teddie Roosevelt
Hemingway (ok, an author, but does anybody want to debate it)
Anybody that has flown in a rocket, including Chuck Yeager, who should have.

Eddie Rickenbacker
Howard Hughes
JFK
Boone and Crockett
Frederick Douglas
Benjamin Frankln
Audie Murphy

Care to contribute?

I've always been cool, but a lot of them weren't cool enough to recognize it.

TR was a true renaissance man, living life to the fullest. He's top of my list.

Next are the individuals who led interesting lives based on profession. Peter Hathaway Capstick is someone who I admire. Hemingway also. Some of the Old West's more (in)famous personalities qualify, as do modern day gunfighters/lawmen. Hard living and surviving danger based on one's skills and expertise is cool. I'll even add Robert Rogers to my list.

Fritz Freleng
Dean Martin
Don Garlitz
Carrol Shelby
Luciano Pavoratti
William Shakespeare

More I can't think of right now......

Gotta add "Chesty" Puller. One of the toughest SOBs that ever lived.

Adding Elmer Keith too, the father of the Magnum!

RW, a few personal observations.
E. Hemingway blew his brains out. Not cool.
Little known are the facts that his father and his only brother also committed suicide.

JFK-he was the pretender to the throne.
Joe Jr. was supposed to be the pres., but that didn't work out.
Not cool.

FYI, I'm from Hyannis, Mass.

OK, rockets, you've got me.
I worked for one of the original Mercury astronauts for a few years.
Those men had balls! They were HERO'S!
Mods, banish me if you must, but it's the truth.

Ben Franklin, maybe the coolest American political figure ever. Renaissance man--inventor, scientist, publisher, author, politician, diplomat, and a guy who really liked the ladies.

Thomas Jefferson

Dolly Madison

Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir, for conservation

Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith, the founders of AA

George Marshal

Eleanor Roosevelt

Ernie Pyle and Bill Mauldin

Edward R. Murrow

Dwight Eisenhower

Stan Musial, Roberto Clemente and Cal Ripken Jr.

I could go on, but it's late.

@@@ He was pretty cool BEFORE he blew his brains out. There were 5 (count 'em, five) suicides in his family over 4 generations.

JFK-he was the pretender to the throne.
Joe Jr. was supposed to be the pres., but that didn't work out.
Not cool.

@@@ No, he was in succession to the throne. People wore hats before JFK, but he didn't like hats so everybody stopped wearing hats. Everybody wanted to be like JFK. Like Clark Gable not wearing an undershirt. Fruit of the Loom about went under as a result of that.

FYI, I'm from Hyannis, Mass.

@@@ I'm impressed. I knew some folks from Nantucket and the Kennedy's weren't well liked among the social set there.

OK, rockets, you've got me.
I worked for one of the original Mercury astronauts for a few years.
Those men had balls! They were HERO'S!
Mods, banish me if you must, but it's the truth.

@@@ They sure were my heroes. I even collected their coins out of the potato chip bags. Maybe Yuri Gagarin was a commie but he was one cool commie with large cujones. And when you look at Neil Armstrong's footprints on the moon, there is a mysterious trench between the prints where something was dragging the ground.

oh, I gotta type something here.

Some of my personal heroes would include Bill Jordan, Skeeter Skelton, Jeff Cooper, Gunny Hathcock, Col. David Hackworth, Gen. Singlaub and every MOH recipient. All for different reasons and the list by no means complete.

Actors play parts written for them in a script. They are empty vessels filled with someone else's cool. The dude who wrote for Steve McQueen was the one who was cool.

Musicians are not far behind. Sports guys? In a gladiator kind of way. Until they're worn out. Then they get tossed to the lions.

T.R. was an aristocrat who created the persona then used his considerable wealth to make it the truth.

I suppose if I had enough money, I could convince people that old, fat and balding was also cool. Wait, Alfred Hitchcock already did that...

To me Humphrey Bogart was a really good actor but the pictures of him and his personal revolvers made him cool.
Some guys just have it, Willie Mays in baseball from the pics of him playing stickball with the neighborhood kids in NY to the stories of how he became the focus of the room when he walked into the All Star Game locker room. Charisma that cannot be taught.
Cool Americans have to include the Maverick achievers in many fields, the Thomas Jeffersons, Kit Carsons, Daniel Boone, Parker Ackley John M and Johnathon Browning and many others.
