Default Crud. Skunk!

Well, heck.
Apparently someone ran over a polecat nearby.
Guess I'll be smelling it for awhile.

We live out in the country, and we frequently smell the aroma of nearby skunk. A couple of years ago, my dog was sprayed by a skunk in our back yard...oh my gosh, that is the worst smell ever! It was late evening, and we bathed him all night long with everything we could find on the internet, and nothing helped. As soon as they opened, we called our vet, and she suggested "Nature's Miracle." I took off to the nearest PetsMart, and got several versions of it: shampoo, laundry detergent, carpet cleaner, etc.

That stuff really works! We bathed the dog in it once, and there was just the faintest aroma left...a second bath, and he actually smelled good.

Ok, Dr, & GK,
Seems the skunks are getting worse in towns. Easy food I guess.

GK, years ago I used to backpack in the N.C & Va. mountains. I always had my dog with me.
One warm night, tent flaps open, dogimus tromps in, sticks her freshly sprayed snout right into my face.
Whoa! Trip over. Hike out, spend days cleaning the tent, (a Sierra Designs) to no avail.
The tent was a write off, at about $300 1976 dollars.

She was a damned good dog, though. More than made up for that faux pas over the years.

A friend of mine swears a mix of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda left to dry on the dog works.I sniffed the dog she was washing and I couldn't smell a thing.

I have run ins with those suckers on the night shift almost every night. Luckily I haven't stumbled onto one enough to have it spray yet... but I've come real close. Even hit one while opening a door and the sucker didn't fire.. He musta been tired

They're all over the parking lot where I work. The guards keep throwing food scraps out the door.

Technically a polecat isn't a skunk more of a ferret. I know I've always called them that also.

Been through it with a dog, she came in the house long enough to turn around and back outside. House smelled for a week. Have them under the house and garage. They love cat food in the blind corner in the middle of the road. They will smell until the next rain. Haven't had many around lately maybe the cat food is working. Spring and fall are the bad times, you want to leave your windows open but can't.

Look at the bright side. It'll keep the flies off those Middle Tennesee brides for awhile.

Don't forget to clean the dog's collar after a spray. I cleaned up my dog to a tolerable lever after a direct hit by then my nose was pretty used to it and it almost smelled like burned coffee. I put his collar back on and couldn't figure out why the house still stunk until I smelled the collar.

Once early one morning I was sitting on a picnic table drinking coffee. I was sitting on top the table with my feet on the seat.
I hear a sound down below on the ground. It was a skunk checking for dropped food.
That's a real good time to be very quiet!

I came upon one in the barn. I took a water hose with a spray nozzle and sneaked back in. Before it noticed me, I let him have it full force from about12 ft. It took off in high gear and didn't spray at all.

I hit one in a '78 280Z Datsun one time. The car sat pretty low and I hit it dead center. I had some greasy stuff all over the bottom of the gas tank and rear axles. It smelled so strong in that little two seater that I truly believe my Wife and I got a strange buzz. It must have been the skunk, right?
peace,
gordon

I know this will seem goofy, but the smell of polecat takes me back to my youth in Florida. My dad's last duty station was Hurlbert field/Eglin AFB field 9 and we lived way back in the woods. About once a week, our old hound would come home reeking. Skunks are rare around here but once in a great while, I'll get a "whif of Jiff". I'd rank it up there with Hoppes and Kroil.
