Default 5 days and a wake-up

Welp, it's gettin' close...and it's gettin' REAL! Monday we will shove a few chickens and goats aside as we board Turkish airlines and fly to Istanbul. Spend an extra day there and then board a cruise ship and cruise the Mediterranean for a week and then wind up in Athens Greece. Spend a day or two extra there and then fly back home.

No, we didn't hit the lottery. Robyn and her husband are taking his parents and us on this fancy schmancy trip. Nuttin' but first class everything for the whole trip. On the ship we will have our own private butler. And as excited and eager as I am I am ever mindful of the recent bombings we bestowed upon Iraq and I know that political tensions in Turkey are somewhat tense. I would like for y'all to keep yer fingers crossed that the Syrians don't get us. I keep remembering the movie sceen where Jack Ryan goes to some squalid 3rd world country and some guys with rockets shoot up there vehicles from the roof tops along the really narrow streets.

Our approximate date of return, unless we wind up sittin' in a mud hut with bags over our heads, is Aug 29th. Are we havin' fun yet?

Athens is the most beautiful and romantic place on Earth. I told my buddy that if he had boobs we would never leave.

As long as you have money the Greeks will love you.

Worked all over that area years ago. Ah, Turkish airlines used to be called Turkiye Havliva Yalare or something like that. When I flew we used to joke "Fly and die with T.H.Y." Main reason was every time I flew in or out of Istanbul I had to spend an overnight while they scraped another Boeing 707 off the end of the runway. I'm sure it's better now.

Sounds like a great trip, and there seems to be a lull in the "activities" over there, quite a few of my friends have been over there and loved it. Have fun don't worry!

Was in Athens Greece the afternoon the war started. Went running up to the top of the acropolis, ran some laps around the Parthenon, etc. Wonderful place. The historical sites are tremendous. Istanbul is a blast, especially the bazaar and palace. There are lots of places which were especially meaningful as they are mentioned extensively in the Bible. One day we were able to join in a worship service at a Greek Orthodox Church. Most impressive. Very much enjoyed the food in both Greece and Turkey. Prices were very good. Ya'll will have a lot of fun!

We have seen the accommodations on our plane We will be in business class and that's the seats that lay down into beds pretty good. I flew from New York to Tokyo a few years ago in the "coach" section. Little narrow seats that went 7 abreast and would only slightly recline. Fourteen hours of HELL!

The thing that impressed me the most was the size of an ancient Greek Hoplite's helmet. They couldn't have been any taller than 5'. Check it out when you go to one of their museums. Have fun and buy your wife a leather coat in Turkey.

Word of advice. DO NOT attempt to take ANY photographs while in a Greek or Turkish airport. They are all considered military establishments and things will quickly go downhill. A bunch of UK plane spotters found this out last year IIRC.

Jack, sounds like from your "5 days and a wake-up", you were an old service man of some sort. On the last 2 or 3 days, (depending on the eagerness to get out) we wore the clipboard of the list of things we had to do to separate, (Army speak) from Unca Sam's finest, around our neck during the day. Just to fret the rooks, and staff sarges.

Have fun over there. Along with you Texacans, the Turks were once considered the best fighting force on earth. Quick to rile and difficult to cool down.

Expect you will notice airport security measures ( uniformed, auto equipped type) in all of your international stop-overs,except U.S. of course.

You picked Ringo for your salvation if needed huh? Good choice. From what I have seen here, he could extract you from the clutches of eternal flame if needed.

A word of advice that helped me. Leave your jeans, shorts, boots, hats and caps at home. Dress in slacks with oxford shoes. Pullover collared or button up shirts with no tees. No military rings or identifiers. This will eliminate most of the anti American attitudes. Get a hat that keeps you shaded but looks European. Make sure that your wife has shirts that cover her upper arms, and a dress or slacks no shorts. Otherwise she may not be allowed in some historic art venues as they are religious sites. Get a good waist pack/money belt that holds passports. Carry a copy of the front page and your DL in a separate location in case they are stolen.
We will return to Athens one day, totally enjoyed it as a city. Don't pass on the cooked octopus, I liked it.
Take a walk up Athens Blvd from the base of the Acropolis, you will find everything for sell except guns in 1/2 mile from exotic spices, lamb carcasses to chain saws.

Thanks for the very valuable advice. We are veterans of many cruises in Hawaii, Alaska and the Caribbean but this is our first time in that part of the world. I think it would be a great place to not make too many mistakes and your advice will come in handy. Guess I'll leave the ropers and levis at home.

I wondered if any one would pick up on that phrase. I was an FMF corpsman '62 - '66.

Do you remember the "short timers sheet" or "FUJIMO"

Yep I picked Ringo because after his exploits in McDonalds. You don't mess around with LeRoy Brown OR The Ringo Kid.

MOONDAWG, Robyn is my daughter. I didn't give her your number because she is with a really rich guy right now....and they LIKE me.

Hank, I sure do remember where the number of the last day went!. The best place on the sheet!

A "friend" of mine likes to play with Photoshop. He believes that I'll look something like this when I get back from this trip.

I don't think so Cubby. I know I make that look good but still, my ropers and levis would be a huge clash.
