Boondock Story no. 1
Do any of you guys go into the boonies? Some of you probably do, but some of you have 12-20s that leave me to believe probably not.
We got plenty of open space here in NM. It's the 5th largest state with a low population.
So let's start with a remote county. Named for a prez. Harding County.
It's Population is 695, least pop of any county in NM. Square mile - 2149 .
There is only one gas pump in the entire county. Several sick looking towns and not much else.
The funny thing is, when you talk to the folks who live there, they seem to be 'normal'. I know that normal is probably not the best word to use, but that's how they seem to me.
It's not that 'pretty' there, there are few attractions, and not much traffic.
But there is one unique area that's worth seeing. It's so little know that not many folks here know about it.
That would be Mills Canyon on the Canadian River.
The Grand Canyon of New Mexico. A more than slight exaggeration, but Mills Canyon is a neat place!
The first time I ever heard about it was an article on Barbary Sheep.
We have several imported exotic game animals here including the Barbary. One of the first places it was introduced was in the Canadian Canyons.
So when somebody tells you he's been everywhere in NM, ask him about Mills Canyon.

Glades County Florida is one of my most favorite places. I first bought property there in 1986 and there wasn't a fast food place or a traffic light in the entire county. There's only 2 or 3 lights now and about 5 fast food joints if you don't count the bait shops.

I live out in the boondocks! I feel pretty normal. 10 toes and 8 fingers and two thumbs, and believe it or not only one head.
I wish I could say I find city folk to be normal.

Yeah, what are they. If I have one or both, I'd sure like to know what I'm missing.
I live out in the boonies and I ain't that normal. Almost, nearly, but not quite plum normal. I wouldn't want to be any other way.
Peace,
gordon

You guys need to get out more! Apparently you never used the CB or listened to any CB songs, like CW McCall.
Some examples of the codes are:
10-4 Message received
10-9 Repeat
10-20 Advise to location
10-33 Emergency - all units stand by
10-36 Correct time

I live in the boonies. The UP is a beautiful place full of remote woods, lakes. streams and rivers. There are small towns with no fast food joints. A store serves as gas station, grocery store and hardware and post office.
People from the big city move here and want to chance everything and make it like where they came from; but they wanted to get away from in the first place. I tell them, if you want to get away from the rat race...don't bring the rats with you.
They paved over paradise to make a parking lot.
Nature is getting far to crowded.

It could very well be cause I had a tumbler or two of bourbon before taking a look at the forum tonight, but, it struck me funny about "getting out more" to familiarize yourself with "CB" jargon.
I don't think even the truckers are familiar with CB jargon anymore.....And, I will add, quite a lot of them don't seem too familiar with driving a truck, either !

Are boondocks middle of nowhere or sparsely populated? Either or is nearby but tough to get to. Stiltsville back in the day with the view of Miami would qualify.
10 codes are all over the place. What I use at work for negative or will meet can mean anything from livestock on highway to a dead body or intoxicated pedestrian to a suicide.
I guess the OP typo of 12 threw me also.

The boonies can be anything you want them to be! I am telling a story!
I'm not here to set any rules.
I use a lot of slang and jargon, so you boys need to fasten your sear belts and try to hold on!

Currently we have no stoplights in my County but two flashing lights, IIRC. No more need of tourism to watch us either.

Yes, wild hog is a staple in the true cracker diet. Generally catch the hogs using dogs and then fatten them up in a pen before butchering. Lykes Brothers own most of the county and they keep their land natural.
Lake Okeechobee is the reason I'm there. I love the crappie, bass and shell cracker fishing and the winter weather isn't too hard to take.

I live out a ways in the boonies on the shore of a large lake. Moved here 11 years ago to what was our summer camp when we retired.
Permanent town population is under a thousand, but we can easily swell to 4-5 times that on summer weekends especially the 3 big national holidays. Other than the summer things are quite peaceful, we hardly see LEOs in the other times of the year and speed limits are more of a suggestion than a mandate.
We are in a large county, in a large in area but small in population town and that can make things interesting. From my house in any direction there are no red/green/ yellow stop lights for 15 miles( we do have a couple of blinkers at a few intersections) Bad weather closes the schools and the town hall shuts down also. (Course we all know where the town officials live and their phone numbers are in the book.)
Year around people are very friendly and for the most part watch out for each other.
Good hunting sort of decent fishing IF you know your way around. World class snowmobiling.
Bad things is that other than a few small stores anything you need is a minimum of a 1/2 hour trip to more populated areas.

I've lived in NM since '88 and never gotten up to Mills Canyon - will have to rectify that. I've actually got friends in the area, so I have an excuse. They're gun people, too.

I just love New Mexico, lived in Amarillo for ten years and went into NM any chance I could. Never made it to Mills canyon but really like the Capulian Mountian area. The views are great you can see the larval flows for miles. Heck the whole state is enchanting.

We always referred to the Boonies as "The Woods", never spent much time in a desert until we moved to Utah, never learned to appreciate it until I saw it in bloom one year in Arizona, very pretty. I suppose some folks today could refer to the Boonies as being "Off the Grid", cell service is still quite limited in local mountainous areas. I've heard the Boonies referred to as "Being in the sticks", Canadians use the term "Bush" referring to being "Out There".

I'll give them credit, they're better than most of the carpetbaggers that came down but I'm still p.o'd at 'em for trying to phosphate mine Fisheating Creek.
For sure. More good spots up US 27.

Well, if you meant 10-20 you should have typed 10-20, not 12-20 and then act like everyone else that didn't understand what you meant was an idiot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When we moved here......
When we moved here we had to drive a while to get to a grocery store. Now we have traffic jams. I wish there were places around here that are open land, but everything is deeded off. Where and when I used to live I could walk into the woods and be out of the city limits and shoot my guns. Not any more.

We got an area here called North Albuquerque Acres. It's North of town up to Indian land.
When it was first subdivided, it was a 'joke'. The Machine Gun Club used to go up there and have shoots!
Nobody's laughing now! Those lots are worth a couple of hundred thou each, most have big houses already!
