I can't imagine them moving a herd of cattle from Texas to Abilene, Kansas on dirt bikes, though it would probably work out pretty good, actually.

Duke is the only actor that I think could have pulled it off.

Don't know if the Duke actually rode bikes that much.
But one movie cowboy who did go straight to bikes from horses (Trigger) was Roy Rogers.
He of course lived at Victorville, CA and rode all over that part of the world.
Here's Roy on an Indian.

Lots of good riding in and around Victorville, I've done it myself. Used to stage on Dale Evans road as a matter of fact.

I can see him using that to move around film locations on the desert. Somewhere I seen a very similar picture of tom mix sitting on a old Indian motorcycle just like that. Both may have used them to ride to the next set. I was a universal studio guard many years ago and actors were being driven all the time around the lot. In fact I knew several guys who`s job was just that in the studios. For a non actor I always thought that was the best job you could get in the business. They almost lived on the job got tons of overtime, were well taken care of with eats etc.

That Honda SL350 is a pretty cool bike. I once did the Elephant ride on one.

I have done some cattle ranching on dirt bikes, too. It's a lot easier than horses.

Its hard to believe that in just the last 55 years or so that Honda got its start from the little trail 50 cc.

Even before the trail 50 was this thing, when I was in HS, a guy got one of these when they first came out and all of us who rode "real" motorcycles really razzed him. They've come a long way. And most of our "real" motorcycles are only fond memories.

In 1965 I had a older girl friend who said she had rode motorcycles with clark gable and ward bond. Her folks ran a motel and restaurant at calabasas. They hung out in her dads resturant and took her riding. I seen pictures of them riding. Think they had old Harleys or Indians.

Years ago I and a GF were on a trip on my harley on a camping trip on the kern river in California. It was a big outlaw MC club get together weekend that we stumbled on. The river bank was crowded with noise and partying going on most of the night. The next morning my harley wouldnt fire up due to a dead battery. I took it out and was hitching when a kern county deputy picked me up. Earlier I had seen a couple guys just standing with rifles about a hundred yards from our sleeping bags. Turned out they were guarding a local Indian that someone had almost kicked to death. I had noticed a couple cruisers and ambulance over there. The deputy gave me a ride to kernville where I bought a battery and rented one of those little hondas to take back up the river to install the battery. To this day I am not sure how I got the honda back to the shop. Maybe the GF rode it back but I doubt it. I do recall being amazed at the power and ride of it. Another time I and a friend were on a ride and stopped at a store in the mountains north of Los Angeles. We both had big dressers, all the gear etc. A 16 year old kid stopped to talk and admire our rides. He was on I think a little honda trail 90 cc like that and told us he was going to Los Angeles on it and had started out in Salt Lake City! That HAD to be some kind of unrecognized record! It made me feel a little small. When I was a kid I had a old 1946 whizzer motorbike and I had thought that was something!

I got a Honda qa50 (neon green) when I was 7. I cut the sleeves off my jean jacket and wrote in black and red marker "Hells Angles" on the back (I think I wanted to be a rowdy with a protractor). I rode the bike hard until my dad got home that evening and busted me good for cutting up my jean jacket. That ended my biker gang affiliation.

I used to wear a black MC cap like marlon brando`s. I was 12 years old. That and overalls with a stick of belt dressing in my back pocket. Brakes were almost non existent. With just the belt drive it could fool you sometimes especially making a U turn on gravel or blacktop with gravel stones scattered on it. I tore up both knees. Thing would do close to 50 mph. I recall paying $50s for mine. Also the cushmens were popular. Then harley came out with that more motorcycle looking "Hummer".

Might have improved some of his movies.

I'll go hide somewhere now. Or maybe try to get into the witness protection program.

Rather see him on the Honda. If I saw him on a Harley. I'd wonder if he wasn't... Well, I can't say it here, not that there's anything wrong with it.

Don't know about bikes but a movie critic rode with Wayne a few times in his station wagon and said it was unnerving. The Duke would rush right up to a red light or the tail end of a stopped car before he'd stomp on the brakes. He never "eased" to a stop or
coasted.

Heard about a cowboy that bought a horse from a preacher. The preacher checked him out on it and said now remember, I trained this horse to go when I say "Thank God", and to stop when I say "Amen"! Later the cowboy was riding the horse near a cliff and the horse had a mind of its own and racing towards the edge. First the cowboy pulled the reins and the horse kicked it into passing gear! Finaly the cowboy remembered what the preacher said and hollered AMEN! The nag come to a screeching stop right at the edge. The cowboy took off his hat rubbed his brow with a hankerchief and said "Thank God!"

That sure doesn't appear to be a small dirt bike.

Maybe John just makes it appear smaller.

The Honda looks to be a 1971 SL 350 with modifications.

The pipes are low but the SL had that tank shape and the high front fender.

That's as close as I can guess.

I'm happy to see, that along with guns, he enjoyed riding bikes as well.

John Wayne actually had no love for horses.
He rode them because it was a required skill for actors at the time.
I don't know about motorcycles, but he did love boats.

The low, upswept pipes were standard for the SL. The CL350 had the high pipes.

Sorry to disagree. He did love Horses-was also co-owner of the still functioning 26 Bar Ranch in Arizona. Willim T. Brooks, a gent I know who fairly recenty passed awa-and was a long time member of the JWMB - The Original John Wayne Message Board! forums--made several movies with Duke as well as in later years-was his pesonal pilot. Anyway, they had business dealings for decades. One of Dukes favorite things to do when not appearig somewhere-was to spend time at his ranch in Arizona--riding and also breeding Horses.
