Ferguson Dash Cam?
Anyone know why we haven't seen anything from the dash cam video in Ofc Wilson's car? Was it not activated, since a traffic stop wasn't involved??

I believe that they don't have them. Also, if they did, it seems that the action took place to the side of the car, not directly in front of it.
There doesn't even seem to be amateur video of the actual incident. Lot's of video of the aftermath with extraneous comments by people who weren't there, but not actual video of the incident itself.
If someone had video that proved the case one way or the other, it would no doubt be all over everywhere.
Instead we have video that doesn't seem pertinent with audio that is even less so.

Do they have dashcams? A lot of agencies don't. My dept. is over 500 sworn and nationally accredited and we still don't have them. As for this incident, what would a forward mounted cam show? From what I've read so far this all took place on the driver's side of the car and inside the car.

Even if the incident was outside the field of view of a dash cam it would likely still be caught by the officer's body mic if worn.
Now if that would be of any help is anyone's guess.

That Ferguson has small ($$$ wise) department with next to no electronic recording capability was mentioned on day 1. No dash or body cam. Cannot say about a permanently active mike with recording capability.

It's unusual that....
It's awful hard to miss get into SOMEBODY'S security camera these days. Too bad because it would be an important piece of evidence.
There was a guy sleeping in a parked car not near anything of interest like a bar, or store or anything. I'd suspect he figured he'd better sleep off whatever he was doing. A guy came up to the car and shot and killed him through the window. It was caught on surveillance tape and a group of guys were quickly arrested that were all involved in it somehow.

Ferguson chief stated on one of the first reports that they had dash cams but hadn't installed them. Kinda bad I guess but there it is.

There are also new cams coming out that attach to the LEO's head or chest area. These would solve a lot of problems. Perhaps if we diverted some money from the cradle to grave welfare programs, we could pay for them. Please note: I said "cradle to grave" not temporary help.

They apparently have cameras (including wearable ones) but don't have the money to install them. Good thing they have the money for armored cars, sniper rifles, tear gas and body armor.

Even if they do have a dash camera, the place to show it would be for investigative purposes and during ensueing court case as evidence if charged . . . not the 6 o'clock news.
For some reason the public gets the idea they have some kind of "right" to evidence before due process of either party. Too many folks watching too much reality TV and think it's actually reality . . . people, listen to me, TV is fiction, even reality TV shows and most of the news is made up.

Pretty soon there will be tiny cameras attached to the posteriors of everyone so history can record their every movement.

Unless of course the video does in fact prove Mr Brown to have been in the wrong. In this case, u can bet noone would tell police they had the evidence.

They are such a great tool; if there was one and with the incident not occurring in front of the vehicle, at least there is the audio...hopefully.

I can't fathom why there isn't a fast push to get body cams on all LEO's as quickly as possible. Imagine the costs and aggravation that would have been avoided had the cop in Ferguson had one on him (assuming everything the cop's allies have been saying is true). The savings would have paid for the department's body cams 1,000 times over. And the cop's life wouldn't have been turned up-side-down.

One of the local departments here recently completed a pilot project with body cameras. Officers involved reported fewer problem encounters (folks knew they were being recorded). Also, there were far fewer complaints filed against those officers. They concluded that this was because folks knew they couldn't get away with bogus claims and because officers were more professional knowing they were being recorded. I never understood why they don't record every field sobriety test in DUI cases. The savings in court resources would be tremendous.

I'm roughly 15 moles from Ferguson. The city recently won a grant for dash cams, which were at the department waiting for installation. It's a very small community not far from the city. You have to understand that you can cross the street in StL and go from the city to the county. There are 110 municipalities that surround StL City all with their own small force and tax base.
