Default Math Challenged Clerks - RANT!

Yesterday we went to Burger King franchise in Mayfield KY.

Ordered Three Big Kings using a $1.99 coupon and large fries.

Clerk asked for over $12.00. WRONG! 3 x $1.99 = $5.97 The fries are $2.19. That ain’t $12!

Clerk gets help. Asks helper, “Did I do something wrong?” Second person swipes a card into the register and starts fiddling around. Finally asks for $9.00. WRONG AGAIN!

I do the following grade school math on a piece of paper:
(3 x $1.99) + $2.19 = $5.97 + $2.19 + $8.16 ** 6% tax = $.49 ** TOTAL $8.65

Third person at register now “NO it is $9.00.”

Not only were they math challenged, nobody could get the register to give a correct total.

I do not know how to use their register, but I know how to use a pencil.

“FORGET IT! I am going to Hardee’s.”

Hardee’s $4.00 coupon burgers were $4.24 with tax.

Wonder how many people get overcharged and do not realizes it. If the clerks can not properly enter coupon information, maybe the coupons should be scannable by the register.

O when they all get $15 a hour all will be well. You will never have a problem in a fast food joint again!

If you were eating in there may have been an additional tax.
I have not heard of BK having any sort of round up for charity thing going on.

Or maybe the only applied the coupon to the first one - or not at all.

Could be they were planning to pocket the change.

No tax was only the State's 6%. Just like Hardee's calculated.

No excuse, but coupons can be responsible for confusion, unintentional or otherwise. "The $1.99 is valid for only one sandwich, the other two are regular price." OR "You can't combine this offer with any additional items." OR "That coupon is not valid in this store, only in the one on X and Y."

There is no end to the "footwork." Maddening, isn't it?

I grew up in a mom and pop grocery store, that my parents owned.
The art of counting change back to someone is a lost art.
When my daughter was in high school I worked the concession stand at basketball games as a cashier, with no calculator and counted change back to people. The older people would comment on my counting back change,
The students just had that deer in the headlight look.

The responses in these posts are indicative of the vast deficiencies in our entire education system. The employees today have also become so dependent on technology that they can not perform even the most basic of tasks. Additionally, they have no clue as to proper grammar and sentence structure, including the appropriate verb tense. Instead of "I saw....." it's "I seen...." I have had several people share with me that their son or daughter can not balance their own check book and perform a reconciliation of their checking account. If it weren't for Quicken and Quick Books..................

My wife and I were in Port Aransas, TX several years ago (2005 to be exact). There was a "Help Wanted" sign in the window of a souvenir store. Among the requirements for the position - "..must be able to make change..." The position is probably still open.

Burger King just bought out Tim Horton's so there calculations were in Canadian currency.

They are now un-American as they will be incorporated in Canada, thus do not have to pay US taxes.

Let most of these modern kids look at a clock or watch that has hands and they cannot tell what time it is. They want something like this (digital time) 10. 15AM or 11.05PM. ( I really doubt that some of them actually know what those two abbreviations means)

Sir,

Just for the sake of accurate reporting, Burger King bought out Tim Horton's, rather than Bob Evans. Not trying to be a pain to you at all.

Was at Sportsmen's Warehouse. They wanted $3.87 per can for propane; $16.99 for a 4-pack. $5.99 for a two-pack.

Therefore, four cans would have cost $16.99, if packaged together; $15.48, if bought separately, or $11.98, if I bought 2 two-packs. Guess which I bought?

BTW: The cashier was nice enough to point out the sale price on the 4-pack to me!

I agree whole heartedly. However, in last Sunday's Parade magazine's Ask Marylin (the genius chick) column, she was asked "Should students be allowed to use calculators on tests?" Her answer was "Absolutely, the calculator doesn't think for them." I wonder if she eats at Burger King?

Default CLOCK TIME vs The Math Challenged

CLOCK TIME vs The Math Challenged

With the dependency on DIGITAL time would the phrase “a quarter past” have a new meaning.

A Quarter Past - A unit of time that follows a specified point in time during which the person has earned another twenty five cents.

I could have resisted, but I didn’t try very hard.

Some deals require you to pay tax on the original price I have noticed.

Sometimes you get something free but have to pay the tax on it.

I have several stories though of mathematically challenged tellers, the latest was for a purchase of $20.23.

I had a $20 bill and a quarter, and a bunch of pennies, so I gave the cashier $20.28 and asked for a nickel back.

The look on her face was priceless and I knew I had blown her mind.

She refused the pennies and told me I had too much money on the counter! I said I know, I'd like a nickel back.

She said I can't do that, and pushed the pennies back at me, then rang in the $20.25, got out two pennies and put them on the counter.

I then asked if I could trade the now 5 pennies for a nickel.

Why sure she said!

You should hear my story when the ice cream vendor ran out of dimes at the EAA airshow......

Well, at least they are not trying to rob you.

Back in the 80s, I was a "route salesman". I put magazines in the grocery stores and convenience stores, and places like that. And I had, maybe, 50 C-stores on my route, that I'd work each week.

Over and over again, I'd see people take something to the register, and when the clerk told them how much, they'd put a handful of money on the counter and let the clerk count out what was needed, then put the rest back in their pocket.

One day I go up to a store and see that 20-ounce Dr. Peppers are on sale for 45 cents. I reach in my pocket, pull out a handful of change and do a quick count. I have a dollar and 23 cents.

I go in, get two DPs, walk up to the counter and put that 1.23 in change down. The clerk looks at it, then informs me that I need another quarter.

Now, I figger 45 and 45 is 90, and 7% tax makes 97, and there's 123 there, so how can I owe more? That's when I realize that, at least some of these clerks, are robbing those poor morons that don't know how to count their money.

Many years ago at a McDonald's the bill was something like $8.32. So I gave the clerk $13.32. The clerk entered it into the register and then looked amazed. "Your change is exactly $5!!" he said. "How did you figure that out?" I was more polite and kind in my response than I might have been. Sad.

For some reason, I am reminded of two stories, the first of which happened to me. After leaving a store near my grammar school, I realized that I had been given too much change, and returned to set it right. While I was explaining to the operator of the cash register, probably the owner, what had taken place, his wife, who couldn't hear the conversation, probably thought I was claiming the error was in the other direction, and piped up, saying "Didn't you also get a [whatever]?" For whatever reason, I did not let this color all future transactions, but none of them were in that store. BTW, this was in the late fifties.

Many years later, I heard of a young boy who was given a brand-new dollar bill for his birthday. All excited at this gift, he went to the closest candy store and exchanged it for twenty nickels. He promptly went to the store down the street, where he exchanged his nickels for two fifty-cent pieces. He continued in this vein until the clerk at the first store, whom he had visited several times already, asked him what he was doing. He said, "With all this money changing hands, sooner or later someone is going to make a mistake, AND IT'S NOT GOING TO BE ME."

I learned to count back change when I worked in a beer store in the 70's (and they actually PAID me! )

Last year I took on a part time job in a gun store - (and they actually PAY me! ) - and it was second nature to do so again.

While older folks remark about how refreshing it is, the "under 50's" just look at me like I'm a show off and want me to shove the money in their fist so they can pocket it without checking and get on with their life.

It's like everyone is in such a hurry for things to be done that they don't care if things are done correctly or not.

A few years ago I stopped in a Del Taco for lunch. The bill came to $10.13 (not sure exactly, but it was something like that). I handed the teenager a $20. At that same moment I realized that I didn't want a handfull of bills and change handed back so, I handed the girl a quarter. She had already typed the $20 in the register.

When I handed her the quarter, she just started to cry. Yep, she was so paralyzed with ignorance, she couldn't react. The concept of handing me a $10, a dime and two pennies was completely beyond her capacity to act. Staggering.

Now, having said that, I have to admit that I'm slow. I can make change, but I have to think about it for a moment.

I've got a ton of those stories. No one can count change any more. Last time I went to a sub shop the bill came to $15.50 . I handed the girl a twenty and 2 quarters. She had the deer-in-headlights look and reached for a calculator. She called a co-worker over and neither could figure it out. When I told them to just give me a five back they did but I don't think either one ever figured it out.

Default Math Challenged Clerks - RANT!

I should have presented this position in my original post. The OP alluded to it. While the OP's experience was at a Burger King, these same "mentally challenged" people are working at much higher levels in our society with a greater adverse impact. This explains why you continue to have billing errors from your service providers, you are over (but probably rarely under) charged by sub-contractors, and financially-based transactions (i.e. the purchase or sale of a home) are rarely correct the first time through the chute.

In my own case, we have been with A T & T for over four years (let the laughter begin) and rarely, if ever have our monthly statements either been correct, or the same as the previous month. We have made no service changes since April 2010 when we moved in to our present home. Customer Service reps are not geographically located in the United States and can not comprehend words and sentences in the English language, at the required level. During my last monthly call the CS rep recommended that I send a letter to the CEO of AT&T (which is #11 on the Fortune 500 list), which I did. I find it to be unacceptable that the CEO becomes engaged in correcting repeated errors in a residential customer's monthly billing. For example, I noted on two months statements that I was being charged $5.00/month (plus state and Federal taxes) for their "Worldwide Value Calling Plan" (???) I have never made an international call for any reason.

"Your order is $4.05."

I put a $5.00 on the counter and reached for a nickle in my pocket... because I had it and didn't want to add 95 cents to my already bulging pocket change.

The clerk enters $5.00 into the register so that it can "compute" my change.

He then notices my nickle on the counter next to the $5 and asked... "What do you want me to do with that?"

I started to tell him... but thought better of it since it was a place where people were eating.

After trying to explain that I just wanted a buck back... I gave up and took the change.

I'm sure that he thought that I was an idiot.

Eating in or out? Tax factor. No drinks? Maybe they charged you for the cup you got for water?

Isn't it funny how cash register or system programming "errors" nearly always work out in the favor of the merchant? You'd think errors would end up benefiting merchants and customers about equally.

I've seen the opposite more often.

There are a couple of stores around here that have an "accuracy" guarantee. Rite Aid for example, has a policy that if your item scans incorrectly, you get it for free. Twice I've had an item that was on sale ring up at the wrong price. In both cases they were the ones that caught it and gave me the item free.

Lot of rants lately.

You folks have heard there are people in the world being bombed, don't have basic necessities like water and food or access to any sort of medical care, right?

Rants are a good way to vent annoyance, especially at legitimate if minor concerns. Personally, I refuse to just accept that our society is full of idiots, often of their own making, and not be annoyed with dealing with them.

Yes, I understand about having to pay the sales tax on discounts, rebates, and BOGOs (buy one get one).

My point was the coupon specifically mentioned the price as $1.99. This advertized price was very plain and specific on the coupon.

My daughter worked in a store where she had to make change and I tried to explain how you should count up from the cost of the items to the bill size you were given. Most clerks now will count out the change you're given and it's up to you to make sure they've done it correctly.

I usually just hand them bills now and take the change the register tells them and toss it in a change jar. I got tired of giving them money so my change came back in my preferred form as it caused so much confusion. More than once when I was given too much back and brought it to their attention I was told they didn't make mistakes.
I agree a lot of the rants here may be petty but it sure does help to get stuff off your chest and rant sometimes. It may just release tension and avoid a later disagreement elsewhere which may not be so harmless. Life is pretty stressful today as it is and venting helps sometimes.

Yep, I'm one of them. But I worked for 54 years and only retired a month before my 71st birthday for medical reasons, so I'll take it and screw around on the computer all day.

Years ago when that policy was implemented I was at a box store and they had a display of protein bars and I decided to take advantage of the great price.

At the register they rang up for something like an extra 50 cents each. I complained and the manager came over. The manager and the cashier went over the details and the manager went to the display and took off the sale pricing sign. He then told the clerk to pay me the store policy of $5 for an incorrect scan.

Lucky for me I had grabbed 32 bars, and I left the store $160 richer than when I came in!

And to further bore you guys:

At the EAA airshow there was an ice cream stand. It was hot, and the ice cream was selling, well like hot cakes I guess.

Back then the total for two cones came to $3.60. As I waited in line I heard the cashier say "two cones, that will be $3.60, about half a dozen times. I'm sure he had the change thing figured out, it was always a dollar, quarter, dime and nickel or six dollars, quarter dime and nickel depending on what currency he received.

Just my luck when I got there I ordered two cones and he said that will be $3.60 please and I handed him a five. He punched the buttons and the drawer opened and he stopped dead with the color draining from his face staring in the drawer.

I asked if there was a problem and he said they were out of nickels!!!

I said that's okay, I'll take dimes.

I may as well have started discussing quantum mechanics because the word "dimes" didn't make sense to him!

He said again, "I'm out of nickels" and stared in the drawer.

By now the ice cream was melting so I jokingly said, "No problem, just give me two quarters and three dimes" which I swear to God he did, and he looked so relieved when he did it I just chuckled and walked away. By then the customers behind me were wondering what was taking so long and when they saw what happened they laughed too.

I hope the young man got some nickels before the till went dry.....

It was 3.60, you gave him a five (1.40 change), and he gave you 2 quarters and 3 dimes (0.80 change) instead, and you walked away chuckling?

It's always fun explaining why you do not want the multi-pack because it's cheaper individually. It doesn't happen often, but it's worth keeping an eye out for.
