Default General Motors

I am currently in the need of a new vehicle and I have decided upon a 2011 Cadillac CTS. Nice car,it's a lease back, well cared for and low miles. Plus I like the color.
Now just about all my years of driving I always liked and purchased Oldsmobiles.
My first real car out of high school was a 68 442 and my last Olds was a 1989 Olds 98. So through the years I've had a few.
Somewhere in time the morons at GM decided to bring all the brands under one umbrella so each of the divisions lost there individuality, this was always a sore point with me and I've always said it was the end of GM. Who wants a Buick with an Olds engine and vice versa? Now let's fast forward to present day, what do the idiots at GM do?, they shut down the Olds line plus some other, the Olds line was already destroyed by some of the rebranded junk they were rolling out, "The Aurora" c'mon what a loser name plus the car was a loser as well. They weren't
Making real Oldsmobiles anymore!
So as of recent and all this in mind my wife's recently purchased car is a 2010 Chrysler 300 C, no more GM for her.
I have been driving an 05 GMC Sierra, good truck and it has served me well. So
I find this Caddy that I really like and I figure I"ll GM another chance, but low and behold I find the cheap $@&#%^?! were to cheap to put split lowerable back seats so you can extend the cargo space into the trunk. You have to purchase the next higher option package to get that feature. You would think at what these things cost new that all the models would have since the trunk space is all the same.
I'm just about ready to tell GM to shove it! I hate buying cars!

You hit the nail on the head. Why pay big bucks for a Buick when except for a badge and some trim it's really a chevy?

I had my last GM product around 1980 or so. Oops, forgot about the wifes '95 Aurora. That piece of ..... went to her son when she passed. I didn't have to put anymore money into it.

It runs throughout the GM ranks. I have an 06 Impala.........GM was too cheap to put a key latch on the trunk lid. If the battery is dead, the trunk cannot be opened. Other brands may be just as bad.............I'm not educated on the subject.............just couldn't resist adding my $0.02!

I am a GM guy all the way, but with maybe 3-4 exceptions I will not drive any of the newer vehicles.

I quit driving gm. products in the late 80s. After they closed seven plants in Flint Mi. It basically killed the economy in the area I grew up in. I don't think it ever recovered. I don't know because I moved out of that area while I could still get a U-Haul.
I relocated near Phila. Pa. and never looked back. I have not owned a gm. product and do not allow my family members to buy them either. I do drive american vehicles Ford F150, Jeep Wrangler, Harley Davidson motorcycle, but no gm. trash here.

My wife got t-boned and totalled our beloved Chevy Uplander mini-van five years ago. She insisted on a larger vehicle and we wound up with a Hummer H3. The transfer case melted down thanks to a plastic part replaced in the next model year. It was out of warranty, but I foolishly thought my well documented history with GM would count for something. Silly me!

$1500 bucks later I was back on the road. My next stop was my friendly Toyota dealer. My bride was over her need for a larger ride. Two of our kids were in college in different directions. We got a used Prius with 24K miles on the odometer. It now has 126K on it and it has only needed oil every 10K miles, one set of tires, and precious little gas. It averages an honest 48 mpg, the battery pack is still going strong, and if I ever wear this one out (doubtful) I'll buy another. No more GM for me.

My only American car I'll probably ever own is my '99 jeep wrangler sport.
I special ordered it with the heavy duty options. There's nothing on the lot new like I wanted. She runs like new at 107k miles.
I gave up on buying chevys since the 350 block cracked in my '88 suburban. The dealer laughed at me in the service dept when I said I scrapped better running Chevy 4x4 pickups and suburban than my new $28k suburban. After owning a few used one's I always wanted a brand new one. What a lemon it was. No more chevys for me. I been a die hard chevy owner since I was 14yo.(55 chevy first car). Every new Chevy from '73 to '88 had quality problems.

My new '97 Subaru lasted 227k miles. My new 2010 Subaru will last 300k.
If I take care of it. We change the oil and drive them.

My next new car? Another Subaru of course.

Here's my flawless plan to buying new cars. You buy a new car. Pay for it for 5 years. Now it's paid off you have another 5 years free of payments and no repairs on it. Once the car is 10 years old get rid of it before the costly repairs start. If you stagger buying two new cars 5 years apart in buying them you will only have one car payment all the time. You need to do maintenance on your new car so it will last for 10 years.

My new 2010 Subaru will be paid off by Christmas. In the spring my every 5 years a new car plan will continue. My new in 2010 car will be driven till 2020. My new 2015 car will be driven till 2025.

A brand new car should last for 10 years trouble free. The problems start after its 10 years old. It works I've done this all my life.

I hate GM products in generally with the exception of the Opel 2 liter turbo models found in an ATS, all their products are kind of junk. Dodge and ford both make better products of course for a premium in money. With that said there seems to be some changes coming based around the ATS chassis. A new camaro and grand national so they might be coming back around

No GMs for me. I drove a variety of GM chassis ambulances over the years and they were fine, better than Ford actually. That's trucks, cars, not so much.

On our recent trip down south we had a 2014 Chevy Impala. Well equipped car, with lots of nice options. It had cameras to the front and rear, proximity sensors to the side, and so on.

Nice car, except for the build quality. There is a large plastic cover that goes around the mirror and covers some of the gadgets. About two days after we got it I was sitting in a parking lot waiting for my wife to do some shopping. The cover popped off. I got it back on and then it popped off again. After the third time I gave up and tossed the thing in the back seat.

The car had 24K miles on it when we picked it up. I just felt that the build quality was cheap in terms of material and fit and finish.

I'll stick with Toyota, thank you.

My last Chev was a 69 Vette. I'd buy another Vette if I ever got the desire, or an old Camaro, but that's about all the GMs I'd consider.

For years I was a GM owner. Decided to buy a 1 ton PU and the only one I could find was a Ford. Best decision I ever made.

Next one will be a Ford. No more GM for me.

Man this sounds like a BG380 thread.

Anyway I'm not brand sensitive. I've had most of them. Have a buick and three fords now. Had 3 Olds Cutlass Calais's and liked the cars except two out of the three had V6engines. They didn't last long seemed to be a engine problem with them. Had Chryslers no problem until a county police ran over the hood of the Cirrus but was a good car, and just under 300k on a Dodge Daytona I think that was a 87. My 93 Ranger has a couple hundred miles under 300K and never had a problem with it even after hitting a deer doing 70mph. The FX4 only has 60k on it and it's a 07 and the Buick has about 150K. Been lucky with vehicles most have lasted well over a 100k miles. Including my HD's. Heck I ever had a TR7, you know the ones that broke every major part on them. Now those were a piece of junk. Bought it with a bad engine, replaced it and transmission went out, replaced it and rear went out. Then traded it for a Olds Calais. The little Merk Capri was reliable as the Datsun wagon I had in the 80's. The only one I wouldn't go back to was the TR7.

Anyone can make a lemon once in a while and some can make them all the time. Just need to research now and with the infonet it's not that hard.

Man looking back on my post I must have spent a lot of time on the road.

Looks like we have a real fan club here!
This 300 Chrysler outshines any GM I've looked at and it was made in Canada which is fine with me.
I"ll bet you dollars to doughnuts this Caddy comes from south of the border! And I have to admit I forgot to look.

Haven't had an "American" brand car since 1996. Despite being a Mopar loyalist, I couldn't stomach the garbage they were putting out. After one Mazda (decent car, specially for the first model year) I've had Audis and my current VW (R32) since. Excellent build quality, great interiors, and since 2002 when VAG put their foot down on dealers, the service experience has been good as well. Don't think I'll ever buy another 'Murrican car....

Default I've had lots of cars.....

I've had lots of cars and most of them were miserable. Out of all of them two Buicks have been the best. Ford, Mercury, Chrysler had a lot of terribly expensive problems to the point it was better to get rid of the car. The Mitsubishi Montero gets good marks, too. The AMC I started with was a cheap piece of junk, BUT it had great value. It got me around for many years.

I'm lacking in experience with late GM cars except the Buick. Some old ones I know of were tops as was my wife's old Plymouth (until repairs got too expensive).

+1 . . . We are still driving a couple of 1996 Chevrolet Caprice with the big V-8 engines that are fun to drive. Both have more than 150 thousand miles on the clocks and still do not burn oil. I know because I change it. Along with oil changes and various filter replacements, they only need real attention at 100 thousand mile intervals. Life is good.

My earlier experience with Ford and Chrysler products has been "entertaining" and sometimes painful.

If I win the lottery, there will be some hard decisions to make, but for the moment, the old guys in the garage are doing just fine. They may out last me.

I guess I'm the exception here.

In 18 years of vehicle ownership, all I've ever owned is GM products.

I'm currently on my 4th Chevy pickup. 1st one got totaled (wasn't my fault). The 2nd one I sold to buy a 4WD. The 3rd one is still a daily driver & a wood-hauler. Currently still driving the 4th one.

Mrs. Hillbilly is on her 2nd Pontiac Bonneville.

I've had great luck with them all.

Knock on wood, the only trouble I've ever had was normal maintenance stuff.
Keep in mind that we are disadvantaged in New York because of the corrosive salt they put on our roads - ALL vehicles here are prone to rusting.

My last truck was a 1994 Silverado. I bought my 2005 Silverado in 2009.
My FIL is still driving my old 1994 & hauling firewood with it over 270K miles on it.

I bought my first new GM car in 67 or 68, can't remember exactly.
There's also no way I could remember how many new GM cars and
trucks I've bought since then, lots. I've had a few lemons, a 75 Vega
and an 81 or 82 ElCamino to name a couple. I've had a few problems
with Silverados that developed early and were fixed under warranty.
But for the most part I've had a lot of very good vehicles. Every brand
has some poor models and problem areas. A friend just recently traded
off his Ford pickup that he bought new in 2000. In about 120,000 miles
he has spent a ton of money in repairs and feeding it's thirst for gas.
I currently have a 2005 Silverado and a 2012 Cruze, both bought new.
In domestic brands I vote for GM, they're not perfect but still the best
of the three overall.

This thread should have been named GM bashing. That said I have a pair of 1996 GMs , a Blazer (bought new, never replaced any thing other than tires, oil, antifreeze, batteries, gas) A 96 GMC sierra 212k miles. After they paying them off my costs have been about $45 a month in upkeep. Oh the horror these trucks have cost me (not). Everything works heat air etc. not rusted, paint shiny. I am in the rustbelt (N Indiana)

Last 3 cars I have owned were purchased new.

1973 BMW 2002
1986 BMW 325E
2000 BMW 323i

3 cars in 41 years, not bad.

I purchased my last ever GM product around the turn of the century.

After about 18 months of frustration it found a new home far away from me.

I wouldn't drive GM now if, well we'll let that go at that!

Wow....for the record, I have owned three Cadillacs since 2002. the first year CTS, a 2006 STS, and my current 2009 CTS. Between the three cars I have driven them 200,000 miles and the only thing I've had done to them was regular maintenance, no breakdowns, no brakes replaced, nothing. Oh, wait...I did have to replace the fuse on the windshield washer on my current CTS. Seems the fluid I put in in Florida froze the first weekend back in Pttsburgh and I just kept pushing that darned button. Darn, you'd think the guy was asking about buying a Rossi!!

I've been driving pickup trucks, almost exclusively, since I bought my first new Dodge D-100 in 1977. I've had two new Dodges (the '77 and an '07), and two new Fords (an '84 and a '94). Currently driving a 1999 GMC with 199, 900 miles. Bought it used with over 100,000. When I'm done with a truck, I call the junk man. I'm done buying brand new vehicles. Like Hillbilly77 said....everything here in New York starts rusting within a few years due to the road salt. People with nice collector cars put them up for the winter. I'm thinking I'd like a Jeep Wrangler. That, plus a small utility trailer when I need it, will do what a truck does. Wife's 2005 Jeep Liberty (bought new) has high miles...we're thinking about maybe a Subaru for her. The 1999 GMC Sierra 4x4 has been pretty good for a used truck....no major complaints.

I'm not far from Flint, Michigan and all you see here is GM products and few other dealers to have work done at. All my family including in-laws have worked for GM with me being the exception.
I've had mostly GM with exception of three Mazdas and one Toyota over the years. I've had problems with several over the years which should have never happened like three windows on a 2001 Buick LeSabre that had broken mechanisms that needed to be replace at 5 hundred each. The Buick we've owned since almost new and will be replacing within next year likely. Probably be another GM vehicle for availability of repair facilities mainly. If we ever move out of the area I might try other brands.
I won't even get into what happened to my GM stock though. It was supposed to be our safe investment along with our bank stocks but the best laid plans as they say.

I was a loyal GM owner for over 40 years, lots of Chevy's 1 Pontiac, plenty of Olds followed by over 20 of those years in Cadillacs. I'm driving a Lincoln now and it's unlikely I will ever go back. I think that says it all.

I bought and owned GM products from the early '60s until 2004.

That was the last Gov't Motors I'll ever buy. Since they got in bed with the chosen one and took welfare from the taxpayers, I will not deal with them until they pay the taxpayer back every penny they got.

So much GM hate and American car hate... Jeez. My GM cars have been great to me, granted they are all prior to 2002 models, but still.

I owned one Dodge/Chrysler in my life, that was one too many. Have owned a few Fords, never an issue.
The only GM cars I've ever owned were Corvettes. I see a Stingray in my future.

Not a government motors fan by any means. However they have paid it back well at least on paper. That said even if it is so I won't own a GM. I've only ever owned two in my 40 plus yrs driving owning cars a 68 camaro and 74 firebird. Ok cars but I'm a FORD person. Currently have 2 F150 s (94 lightning 12 ecoboost) and 3 Mustangs 68 all original car 85gt that is my resto mod and 04 Mach1)
Have owned Chrysler products first car was a 69dodge dart GT 340 4 spd car only dodge I wish I'd kept now.
Also owned several import brands yet I always come back to the blue oval.

I don't plan on ever buying a new GM (gubermint motors) vehicle.
A used one maybe if cheap enough. (not likely)

I'll be looking for ya, we can both go down a nice gravel road and shed a few tears.

On paper only, in reality the books were cooked to make it look like they paid the government back. Chrysler did, but only because Fiat bought them.

Does anyone else think it's more than coincidence that the government got rid of it's GM stock a few weeks before GM announced the huge ignition switch recall?

I had a chevy S10 bought in '87, 95, and '03. Only the '95 needed a new main cable when the battery cracked and over time the acid ate clean through it. managed to coast into a parking lot where they were building a "stop and rob", secured a hunk of copper wire off the ground and pieced it in with medical tape from my first aid kit. I went to the Silverado in '10 because they are the only "body on frame" truck left. Has 44K on it (I work close to home) and I love it. I have also had 3 Impalas, '02 (I drove this one as a pharma rep, drove it almost 100K miles in 3 years, gave it to my son who drove it another 100K and traded it in on my wife's '12), '06 and '12, none ever in the shop. I'm probably done with P/U's, at 61 I just can't move a refrigerator as effortlessly as I used to. Joe

I had two GM products early in my adulthood. Grew up in a house where my dad would only buy GM or Pontiacs.

I got away from GM products in 2001, and swore I'd not go back. Ay too many failures and maintenance problems.

Made an exception when I added a third vehicle to the house to use as a beater truck (not everyday vehicle). Only bought the Canyon because it had what I needed at a low wholesale price. Really wanted a Toyota, but couldn't justify the added cost for something we don't use daily.

I typically end up with GM products as rental cars (travel a bit for work), and even when new, they just seem cheaply made, noisy and rickety.

BMW and Honda in our house. Plan to keep it that way (or go Toyota).

I am driving the "Best" pickup of my life and there has been a bunch of them. My '09 GMC 2500 Diesel 4X4 is wonderful. Quality construction, performance and good looks all in one package. I have owned GMs, Jeeps and Fords in various configurations. My GM products have been better than my Fords. The Jeeps did their job and were easy to maintain. My wife recently took out a major light pole (not her fault) in her Pontiac G6 2 door coupe. They took her to the ER just to 'check' her out. The EMTs told the Doc about the light pole. She only had minor bruising. The Doc wanted to know what kind of car she was driving so he could get one for his wife. The G6 is being repaired as we speak. GM products have done more for me than they advertised. I will buy another when appropriate. ............. Big Cholla

Currently driving a 2012 Silverado 3500HD with the 6.6 Duramax diesel and Allison transmission for hauling heavy loads. I'm happy, and I felt the same way driving my earlier Silverado 1500 models. They beat the **** out of most of the Ford products we've owned for comfort, quality, and reliability. I personally don't care what anyone drives, just like I don't care what they shoot for firearms. I understand brand loyalty. After all, most of us here share a preference for a particular brand of handgun. Shall we discuss pre-lock vs. IL for a while? It's just about as productive, don't you think?

My new 2010 Subaru will be paid off by Christmas. In the spring my every 5 years a new car plan will continue. My new in 2010 car will be driven till 2020. My new 2015 car will be driven till 2025.

A brand new car should last for 10 years trouble free. The problems start after its 10 years old. It works I've done this all my life.
Wife I have basically been doing this. If you're going to buy new it makes sense. Got just over ten years out of wife's last vehicle before it started giving signs of heading into the shop on a regular basis. Promptly traded it in.

All (both) of my cars have been GM, mainly because that is what dad always bought. Foreign cars were more expensive both to buy and repair.

My first car was a 90 lumina, their new midsize at the time. Sounded good on paper, in reality not so much. Went through 3 alternators, several brake jobs, an ECM, and finally the engine blew in 97 with 61000 miles on the clock. All GM cars were little dreary front wheel drive boxes designed to the lowest common denominator, so I went for a truck platform with the legendary 350 next, my 97 Tahoe, which I still have.

It has been mostly ok, but getting tired of the repairs now that it is getting old:

Gone through 2 alternators (why can't GM make an alternator that works?)
Radiator/hose fitting blew, stranding me.
Fuel pump died, stranding me.
Complete brake job (all 4 wheels) in 2011 (GM can't design brakes either)
Truck can't stay in alignment
Replaced tranny in 2012. Loaner 2012 impala wasn't any nicer than my 90 lumina. Same cheap low quality interior.
Leather seats are full of tears (I've posted pictures before)
Reprinted roof and hood (ditto the pictures)
Replaced leaking/cracked transfer case, water pump, power steering, and frozen front axle shaft for the 4 wheel drive system.
Replaced numerous age related leaking systems: power steering, coolant, oil lines, plugs and wires, rear axle seals.

I keep fixing it, mainly because I don't much like what is available.

My dad has since gotten away from GM and has been buying Mercedes and BMW. My sister has been buying Honda.

After seeing theirs, I doubt ill buy GM again. The Japanese and German cars are far nicer

I have had a few decent vehicles from GM, a couple of Corvairs, and then a couple of Astro vans, a nice comfortable small van on a truck chassis. The AWD was brilliant in winter. That is about all they have ever built that was worth owning.

I have had a lot of Fords, mostly F150s. The best one was an '85 Escort wagon. I had been driving Volvos and Peugeots and was in a "Buy American" mood when I went to look for a new car. The insurance policy came with a "foreign parts waiver" wherein State Farm denied liability for any delays in getting parts from the many foreign parts sources. Still, the Escort was one of the best cars I ever owned, with road manners like a German sports sedan and unstoppable in winter.
