Global Warming
The environmentalists suffered another setback in their warnings about global warming. It's reported that the North Pole icepack has increased in size equal to the size of the state of Alaska. I guess next it'll be the coming ice age. I just hope this news doesn't further the impact to ammo and gun prices.

Despite the rise in average temperatures? Curious. Wonder how this happened? Is it thicker ice?

You're behind the curve. It isn't global warming anymore. It's climate change. They can blame anything on your carbon foot print now. Good news though! We can be saved with a carbon tax!

Don't tell anybody, but we are actually still in an Ice Age - the Pliocene-Quaternary glaciation, which started about 2.58 million years ago.

Right, so now I'm worried that, in another million years or so, I'll really have to worry. Can anybody say, normal climate progression. Nothing can stay the same forever, everything changes.

As it has for many years and, hopefully, will continue to do so regardless of our effort to stop it.

It would be easier to resolve the debate between 9mm vs .40 S&W than it would be to convince me man made climate change is real.

That's good to know. All this time I thought we've been warming up since 11,000 years before what's his face invented the Truth and the Internet.

Make sure to vote!
There will be a world wide plebiscite to determine the temperature that the entire globe should be set! We need something to shoot for! No more just a generalized objection to global warming-lets determine the setting for the Earth's thermostat.

My wife is actively engaged in saving the planet from global warming. She just loves to leave the doors open with the AC blasting. I figure all my cold air leaking out should help cool things down.

How dare you guys disregard and ignore the obvious climate change facts?
No matter how many times findings are manipulated and results fudged to suit the climate wack-a-doodles' agenda.

In the first part of the 20th century Lake Erie would freeze real thick and truckers would save gas and time driving across the lake between Ohio and Canada.

Global Warming is nothing but an attempt by a few rich Europeans to tax the world, including the USA, as if their current rip off of our economy is not enough for them. However, given the current rate of decline in our industry, they better move quickly if they want to tax our carbon foot print.

Man are you guy's dumb. The ice is getting hot and expanding. Haven't you ever had to heat a part up to get it to go on. It's the same principle just ask the climatologist when they look to be wrong.

I've noticed that even the hard core "climate nuts" have been forced to recognize that for at least 20 years we've experience a documented overall cooling trending.
So to bolster the claim of global warming... they claim that it's "just on hiatus".

The American Southwest has just been informed that they will experience an extended drought for the next several years.
This happens a couple of times every hundred years. The last one was in the 1930's.
Before that, it was 1845 to 1856.
It was Bush's fault then, too.

There is no doubt that humans have impacted the climate. Climate is different than weather. There is also no doubt that humans are causing multiple species to go extinct daily. We are living during a mass extinction in the Earth's history.
There was a great TV series on Fox last Winter called Cosmos that had en episode that lays out all the evidence. Here's a recap: 'Cosmos' recap: Climate change is explained in 'The World Set Free' - LA Times
If scientific consensus on the evidence doesn't convince you, it only means you haven't been paying attention.

No offense, but kinda a lame, superficial article there, in my opinion. LA Times.
There isn't a scientific consensus. Just folks saying there is. Plus, consensus is not what determines scientific accuracy anyway. ("Watch out for them poison tomatoes!") Facts do.
But hey. No sweat. I am sure we have all seen this movie a zillion times already. Go ahead and believe what you want to. No need to solve this issue on the S&W Forum.

I'm told that this winter we will get more global warming. In Wisconsin, where my parents live, they haven't had a summer - it's been cool and wet most of the time. Leaves are turning early.

The term "scientific consensus" may sound convincing to some, particularly those who have little understanding of science. The essence of science is pursuit of truth and fact. Consensus is nothing more than mutually shared opinions.
There is, in reality, no true scientific consensus regarding climate change, global warming, or human causation. There are many highly regarded scientists who have effectively debunked every single argument made in this field. Those who have made such arguments are almost invariably those who benefit from fundraising, government funding, legislation, and research grants, in effect perpetuating the "scientific consensus" for personal gain and career enhancement.
The climate change movement has turned into a worldwide cult, similar in many respects to a religion having an established unequivocal gospel of truth, with its own saints, high priests, and structure. Anyone who questions these so-called truths is renounced as a heretic and dismissed as being unenlightened. Those who accept and parrot the liturgy are rewarded with the knowledge of their own inherent intellectual and moral superiority to the common man, and can proceed in a self righteous cleansing of the Earth and humanity for the good of those lesser beings. Of course, everyone must be compelled to share the costs of this great endeavor through taxation, with those who have more required to give up more for the common good.
During the 1970's we were inundated with clear "evidence" of the imminent coming of a new Ice Age. The Earth would suffer extreme cold temperatures for much of each year, growing seasons would shrink so that global famine was a foregone conclusion, human civilization as we knew it would cease to exist. Only by making drastic changes in human behavior, and giving up all control over our daily lives to the right people, could we hope to avert the tragedy and cling to life.
At the same time the debate was going on about switching the United States over to Daylight Savings Time. I recall a woman calling in to a talk radio program at the time, complaining that she did not want her flower garden to have that much sunshine!
Somehow the scam never worked for "global cooling", then "global warming" never got off the ground, so "manmade climate change" became the mantra.
The same scientists, same talking heads, same politicians, same celebrities are still talking the same game. And they know they are still selling their snake oil to the same lady who actually thought that passing a law could actually change when the sun came up and went down.
P.T. Barnum hit the nail on the head when he said, "There's a sucker born every minute".
Rom Emmanuel knew what he was talking about when he said, "Never let a crisis go to waste".
This is not a political movement, and it is not a scientific movement. It is a scam, a monumental fraud perpetuated by people intending to benefit from selling "manmade climate change" or whatever other name they can put on what they are selling.

LoboGunLeather,
You would really benefit from reading my first link.
Science has nothing in common with religion. At all. Science =/= beliefs.
There are really two issues here:
1. Is climate change real and human-caused?
2. What should we do about it?
You are mixing your responses between these two issues. I am only arguing the first.

Being a card-carrying post-graduate meteorologist, I read the actual journals instead of the pop media reports on the grant-whore "research" that cherry picks data to support the political agenda.
As long as serious researchers point out the bogus data and false assumptions, and career state climatologists get fired for releasing REAL DATA that contradict their Governor's political position (happened in 3 states), the claim the there is CONSENSUS ON HUMANS CAUSING GLOBAL WARMING is still another bogus claim that gets repeated and quoted over and over.
The fact is the oceans rose about 200 feet before humans invented fireplaces, and one major volcano swamps human modifications of the atmosphere. You see, I am an observational scientist, who has spent a career showing that the COMPUTER MODELS WILL SHOW WHATEVER YOU WANT THEM TO! It is really inconvenient to the GLOBAL WARMING RELIGION that the NASA OBSERVATION data shows global warming has gone flat for the last 10 years, with HUMAN CAUSED global CO2 emissions at an all time high.

Any 'scientist' who throws out that hockey stick graph is immediately suspect. That was thrown out long ago for being cherry picked data.
And harping on CO2 levels is also suspect. CO2 is a tiny fraction of 1% of the atmosphere. Water vapor (clouds) is much larger factor, and is also a much more efficient greenhouse gas. It is also highly variable, so much so that the 'scientists' ignore it because it is too hard to calculate.
Those organizations are interested in their agenda, not fact or science. Their scientists are paid to push the agenda. Those who won't are blackballed and ostracized. Since the major employer of climatologists is those organizations, it isn't hard to figure out how they arrived at their 'consensus'.

This video does not argue if climate change is true or false. It only lays out the costs of action vs inaction in either scenario. Watch it until at least about 6:30.

Fat Grants
I agree with johngalt.
If I were a climatologist raking in a $1M a year government grant for the next ten years, I might be inclined to say to the grant issuing agency, "Oh, yes! I certainly did find evidence of global warming last year. Please send my next million dollars!"

Do I think that man has effected climate? A little. A volcano effects it a lot more.
Do I think we can do anything about it. No.
Species go extinct every day, they always have. Someday, it will probably be our turn. But not today.

Here is a story describing how the ethanol requirements, pushed by environmentalists, have damaged the environment.
Ethanol damage: The secret, dirty cost of Obama's green power push | Lubbock Online | Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
Another one describes how the DDT ban has caused an estimated 50 million deaths:
Malaria Victims: How Environmentalist Ban on DDT Caused 50 Million Deaths - Discover the Networks
Apparently environmentalists view their projects as having zero costs. They don't understand the law of unintended consequences.
All those projects have costs. Costs that could be better spent on productive ventures. Possibly squelching the next big life saving drug, or a new energy source because the resources that could have been developing it was wasted.
And those who aren't on board? Well, if they won't voluntarily pay, they will be looted and compelled by force to comply. After all, it's for their own good. Sounds a lot like a certain organization regarding firearm ownership.
