Default Dressing For Court

I have been in court for the past two days on a big trial. While I was waiting outside the court room for my time to testify, I was observing the people who were appearing before the judge in the next court room.

I was told many many years ago that when I am before a judge, I need to dress to reflect the dignity of the court. I'm wearing a business suit, polished shoes, freshly ironed shirt, and a tie. And I shave. Some people has mistaken me for a lawyer, and that does not offend me.

I'm looking at the people going into the next court room. T-shirts, shorts or trousers hanging below their butt, sandals or flip-flops, unshaven. These people are slobs. This is not a way to impress or show respect to a judge. What we need are judges like Fred Gwynne in My Cousin Vinny.

I know that you're not supposed to "judge a book by its cover", but I do not understand why some people want to look like low class gutter trash when a respectful appearance will show respect to the judge and will help their case.cmaybe I'm just getting too old.

In Nueces County the judges will not let you in the courtroom in a T shirt or shorts. I think sandals are allowed if you are wearing matching orange jumpsuit.

Default Dressing For Court

I would say appropriate dress may not be the same to everyone. Human beings are to be respected for what they are....not their job! Sorry but in my book political appointees and elected officials EARN their respect !!

Wow, reminds me of Wally World! Wish you had posted some photos of those un-classy people. Just a reflection of a general lack of self-respect that is so prevalent in today's society.

It's respect for the office not the office holder. I remember when people dressed to fly.
Going in front of a judge is probably not the best time to express yourself with an up yours tee shirt.

There are two different kind of respect. 1........the kind that is due an individual because of his position, say an Officer in the Armed Forces, or a Judge in the civilian world. 2........This is the respect that an indidivual must earn thru his actions and deeds. Totally different kinds or respect.

I am now a deputy assigned to a court security team. You would not believe the way people dress and act.We have rules against the wearing of shorts sleeveless shirts and provocative attire.(some of the baby mamas like to show a little something to thier Heros in jail) I have more trouble enforcing common sense dress code than serving warrants.

The judge's job is to, somehow, determine the merits of the case put before him, regardless of whether or not a participant's shoes are shined. He should have the ability and desire to find the truth no matter how it is "dressed up".

I agree that you shouldn't "dress to impress" the judge, but that you should dress well out of respect for yourself and others.
Now I understand not everyone can afford three piece suits (I sure can't.) but at least dress neatly.

You can't be taken seriously if you look like a slob. I have always worn a suit to court.

Ive got Jury duty for this coming Monday. Ill be wearing a dark blue-or black 3 button t-Type shirt--but not a t-shirt. The pants are my going-out-to-impress-pants--so hopefully not too shabby. But serious--yep--I still see them in shorts, ssandals, flip-flops and pajamas. When ive been there seeing that--I saw nobody tossed or rejected.

What irks me the most--is when people try thinking up various ways to get out of Jury Duty. Its been at least 10 years since I was picked and served so--am looking forwards to a change of my pace. My BiL is also having to go on monday.

Sir,you would have a jimdandy of a time and no time for other things--if you were here and saw the types we have here. I wa just at an appointment earlie--saw women in pajamas, a guy wearing a dirty backpack, had a shirt (if you could call it athat?) which had no sides,no sleeveds and looked like a trashed football jersey. pleanty wearing fuzazy pink or other--slippers.

The trouble is--is what if a possible good jurist does not have better clothes? should they be rejected for Jury Duty? I know several here who fit in that catagory--dont have the money to afford much else.

One thing i would like to be asked--is IF I want to serve on a Jury? I would say yes each time since i feel its my civic duty to do so--especially when so many try getting out of it.

Oh Boy...One day long ago my wife or son, I can't remember, gave me a Beavis and Butthead tee shirt as a joke. Well I was working in my back yard, doing firewood if I remember correctly, when a patrol car came to my house and told me they needed me in Court right away, like now. I pointed out my attire, which included shorts, but I was told to get in the car it had to be now. Well have you ever testified in Court wearing a Beavis and Butthead shirt and shorts. I did. Lucky it was Municipal Court and the Judge understood but some of the guys I worked with on the Dept. never let me forget it.

About 6 years ago, I had to go to traffic court for no insurance, no drivers lic. and no proof of insurance. I wore a tie and was dressed up. The judge was very nice and dismissed the case when I presented all as the law states. I would like to think that I showed respect to the court.

I dress nice for jury duty. I know how to dress appropriately. Unfortunately many young folks today, don't know how to dress. Really, they don't know how or what is appropriate. Many will show up to a first day of work, in unacceptable dress, because they are ignorant, and they don't own acceptable dress. Nobody has ever taught them. Sad, but true.

I think a lot of it depends on age, and how a person was reared. Dress standards have diminished since the 60's, and it shows a lack of respect of any authority figure, or process. A person doesn't have to dress up, but they sure can be clean and presentable. Personally, I would never consider wearing anything less than normal business attire.

Default Dress appropriately

Of course I'd dress appropriately for court. One time, though, I had a major problem. After driving 30 minutes to the county seat, my son's court date was postponed because of a bomb scare, but nobody told us when the new court date was, neither anyone from the court or my lawyer's office. We were turned away by police from going near the court building.

The next morning I drive an hour round trip to the county seat to take my son to school. When I get back home I get a call telling me we are due in court. I ask when and am told "15 minutes ago". So I jump in the car, drive to the county seat and pick up my boy who is in school. He's in shorts but it's his school uniform so he is not sloppy but neat I was in long pants and a polo shirt, not ideal, but passable. When we get to court I ask my lawyer to please apologize to the judge for our dress, that we would never appear in court improperly dressed but there were circumstances beyond our control. When they finally let us into the court room it was to assign a new court date and told to come back properly dressed. I was highly pissed off and so was my son and my wife who couldn't be there on short notice but when you are involved with the court system, they call all of the shots, even if they are very poor shots.

My son also complains that many of the people we have to deal with as part of the system, don't seem to be the most educated, qualified or motivated people in the world. I tell him that all of the above are very good reasons to avoid getting involved in the court system and if he is as smart as he thinks it is he'll stay the hell away from anything like that. A trial is a piece of cake compared to the BS and hoops you have to jump through, even if you are the damaged party for months and years on end.

I haven't done anything wrong but I feel really bad because I had to pull a letter from my doctor on my mental condition when asked to do jury duty. I really felt that if I were locked in a jury room for hours trying to make decisions that I didn't know what would happen. I don't mean get violent or anything, but that I would display poor judgement when the case required people to be 'competent'. Before we went in I heard that they weren't sure there were enough jurors to even have a trial. I heard that this poor woman had been terribly wronged and it wouldn't have hurt my feelings to render justice one bit. Anyway I feel like I did the right thing and what had to be done but it doesn't make me feel any better about 'shirking' my duty.

I dressed like a country boy or worse every time I got called & they picked me all 7 times. I may be back now that they raised the pay as it is more than I make.

I don't know about California, but here in Chattanooga that doesn't work. There's a dress code for court here. Punk shows up wearing pants down around his knees with underwear showing... bad move. No shorts, tank tops, muscle shirts... none of it allowed. There was a big stink about the dress code when it went into effect several years ago. Typical whiners. Didn't matter. The judges decided that was the way it was going to be and that was the end of discussion.

Going off on a tangent, 4barrel said they raised the jury fee where he lives.

Last time I was on a jury was the late 80s. They paid 14 dollars a day. I just went to my county court's website and looked. They now pay 15 dollars a day. WOW.

Not everyone owns a suit. (I don't) But there is no reason you can't wear clean clothes in a neat manner. Avoid "T shirts" with provocative statements. For example "Cops suck!" Or if you're charged with DUI a "PBR" or "Corona" shirt would probably be a bad idea.

I liken it to a job interview. A long time ago a friend advised me to "Dress for the interview, not the job."

It's the same thing in court. Lawyers will always advise their clients to dress well, get a hair cut, shave, and in general not be nitwits.

You aren't dressing to impress the judge alone. If it's a trial, you want the jury to like you. Looking like a respectable citizen goes a long way towards that.

When I had to testify, I always wore a freshly pressed uniform shirt, the pants from my dress uniform, and shined "hearing shoes". Which were what a co worker called them because he dressed that way for disciplinary hearings.

Since I had a story to tell the jury, I wanted them to be paying attention to me and I figured the best way to do that was to look like the EMS professional I was.

Started @ $8 & now $45 for about 1/2 day. We are a farming county & no one on the jury wears a monkey suit. Clean & pressed jeans & maybe a pearl snap shirt with your nicest boots. The judges & lawyers dress like us on their days off. They have farms & ranches as do the doctors. Cool place to live. We got 5 inches of needed rain today.

If you must defend your right to dress like a slob then you need to take stock of why you are treated like a slob.
Some of this is worthless use of the first amendment.

I had jury duty not too long ago, and had a chance to observe courtroom "guests".

Unfortunately, I think for many of them it's just an extension of their living room, since they're there so often.

Talking about inappropriate clothes. One day one of the young hood rats that I watched graduate from juv to adult court, came to court wearing a shirt with bright green pot leaves and a bong on it.I made him put the shirt on inside out to enter the courtroom and then told the judges baliff. When he finally got in front of judge with his plea for drug possession. The jg was told about his shirt he had defendant drug tested. He was positive and instead of another probation. He went to jail even his public defender was shaking her head.

I kinda see it as an extension of my parents. If they walked in and saw me what would they say.

It's my opinion that they dress like low class gutter trash because they are low class gutter trash. Larry

Best T-shirts I've seen on criminal defendants in court:

1) Guy charged with disorderly conduct while under the influence of alcohol: "I don't get drunk. I get awesome."

2) Another guy with the same charge: "Punk and Disorderly."

3) Guy charged with extreme DUI shows up for jury trial wearing a Jack Daniels T-shirt. Case pleads out when prosecutor offered a package deal to include new DUI charges from weekend before trial involving collision with 3 parked police cars.

4) African-American gentleman wearing a T-shirt with the Warner Brothers (WB) logo, and the words: "If you see the police, warn a brotha."

5) One I heard about involving a prostitution charge that I cannot share without violating directives of the Great Ape.

Not everybody owns a suit, true, but everybody should be able to knock the mud off their boots, wear something clean and tuck in their shirt.

The worst I see are at wakes these days, no respect for the deceased, the family or themselves.

PS There really is no excuse for not owning a suit or at least a sport jacket, even if you have to go to a yard sale or Salvation Army or borrow one.

I don't own a suit anymore and I don't plan on wearing one ever again. Does that make me less of a person?

I dress for court the same way my mother had me dress for church. That is the way I was raised, and that's the way I am. I have yet to hear anyone complain about my manner of dress.

Remember the sets of T-shirts for couples that said "I'm with Stupid" on one and "Stupid" on the other?

Years ago I was entering a courthouse to testify in a case and saw a guy walking in wearing the one that said "Stupid".

He was alone.

I read a neat little article the other day. It was about how poorly people dress these days. One statement in the middle of it summed it up for me; it said that "you dress up for what you appreciate". I believe that is accurate. People in America don't appreciate much of anything anymore. People don't dress nice for work, school, dates, or even church.

Proof that one really does have to work hard to get into jail. Do stupid stuff, win stupid prizes.
Not dressing for court (no matter what the reason for being there) is not wise. It's like combat; the point of the exercise is to come out alive, and not a prisoner.

There's a dress code in the court I run. We're in a courtroom, not a bar room and I expect the people who enter to dress accordingly and to the best of their ability. I expect cowboy and baseball hats will be removed as well. That's just the way it is.

Was in court due to a burned out headlamp. two genius's sitting in front of me kept acting up and were not dressed for court. Well they kept acting up and the judge took note of their actions. Didn't say a word until their case had come up. He sailed into them before they even had a chance to plead. If I remember right driving with no working tail lights and no insurance. Big fines. When he got tome I plead guilty with an explanation. The lights were working when I left for work. Judge gave me a form to take to a garage, get the headlight replaced, get the vehicle inspected and mail in the form attesting to the lights and inspection. And I was properly dressed. Frank

It isn't just court. I remember when one of my sergeants and did a funeral detail for an inmate. We were in suits which covered up the pistols and the inmate was given a change of clothes before hand. The deceased's family showed up looking like they were going to the county fair, all of them in t-shirts, shorts, I bet the only one besides us that had seen a bath was the guy in the casket. If you can't have respect enough to dress up for a relative's funeral, what will you have? I was taught to go to court, a job interview, etc. all the same way. Looking your best. I only own one suit, but I wear it at weddings and funerals and a couple of hearings I have been too its been dress slacks and a decent button down shirt. I've seen enough trolls coming and going from court rooms over the years that just amaze me. It looks like People of Walmart on trial. I've seen quite a few that appear to have gone to court in their pajamas.
