I keep one of those KITS from Sears that has most of the basics plus a 12 volt drill. That's what I loan from. If it ain't in the kit I don't loan it out. My old Craftsman and SnapOns etc don't get loaned.

My wife left the garage door opened one day while doing some housework and inadvertantly loaned all of my power tools and some other random objects out to someone else. I don't think that I'll be getting those returned. On the plus side I got to go to Lowe's and pick out all the new tools that she bought me

I had that construction shop that is in every small town. I seldom locked the shop, loaner truck had the keys in it. Welder and cutting torches were outside, unlocked, and at ready at my large metal outdoor work table. Seldom was anything stolen, some things like my vises were abused but after 40 years I had no real complaints. However one Sunday @30 years ago, I got a request to borrow my oxy-acc bottles and torches. Since my small set was already on loan, I personally removed the bottles and torches from a spare service truck. I personally loaded them into his truck. Thirty years later I never got them back and for the life of me I cant remember who I loaded them to.

A Marine Reservist mechanic told me he had a simple rule for loaning tools-"ID CARD". Seems to me asking for a driver's license or credit card-perhaps ye Old Army Standby of a hand receipt-make 'em sign for it.

My sons built skateboards and ramps, tree houses, BMX bikes, you name it. They sometimes didn't return my tools, but I usually found them - with the lawnmower!

I'm not buying any more tools.....
I'm not buying any more tools until my son moves out. I had collected tools for 25 years. After all of the projects he's had I have a plastic pan left with some hand tools in it. Also, with the kids he hung out with I believe a lot of them have ended up at the pawn shop. In fact, my son wasn't above suspicion himself. Anyway, no more tools until there are no kids around.

rwsmith,
That's sad. I have a ton of tools. I have a constant problem with my wife not returning them to their proper place. That's life in a marriage and if it's her only fault, I'm very happy.
Still, I can't imagine my son taking my tools to sell to gain a few dollars. I feel for you and hope the situation changes for the better.

Something was hurting my eyes while looking at the picture, and after careful examination, I noticed the offending sticker.
The more important question would be, WHY DO YOU have a Glock sticker ?!

I've never understood why some people feel entitled to things other people work hard to earn, I always figured if I couldn't go out and buy it myself then I probably didn't need it that bad to begin with.

The worse part is, I forget that I loaned it and spend DAYS looking for it.

My neighbors are a bunch of yuppies, and wouldn't know how to use a tool to save their life. Sad, really. The good news is that they don't ever ask to borrow my tools, the bad news, well, we don't hang around talking about guns, tools, and motorcycles... ;( Nice folks, just wish they were more interesting...

Ah yes, tool steel and lawn mower blades, a bad mix for sure. I remember about 30 years ago my wife decided that she wanted to try and mow the yard. Not that I didn't keep it pristine, she just wanted the exercise and had never mowed before. I said "OK, I'll get it gassed up and going, you go check for any rocks or junk that the neighbor kids may have left behind".
Well, she was mowing along and I heard this weeeomp and the motor stopped dead. I ran over and asked what happened and she had no idea. I tried to crank it and it wouldn't budge. Flipped it over and the blade wouldn't budge...what the heck!
I took it in the garage and pulled the blade and there was a dip-stick from a car motor wrapped around and fused to the shaft and housing . It scrapped the motor, had to go down and buy a new mower. Thankfully she wasn't hurt...she never tried mowing again .

The book thing too--I decided a long time ago that if I "lend" a book, I look at it as a gift and am pleasantly surprised if I ever see it again. I usually don't. In my mind any book worth finishing is worth rereading so I keep a lot of books.
I'm fortunate that I'm extremely tool rich. Most of very high quality, mostly older American made, Starrett, Stanley, Plomb, Proto, Klein, etc. They don't get loaned except to my next door neighbor who's a nice young fellow, has a lot of tools of his own, is careful with my stuff, and is right next door. I know where to find him. But nothing with a motor, even to him.
I learned from my Grandfather to only buy a tool once, meaning the highest quality you can get your hands on.
I also learned from Grandad never to loan tools. He was terrible about returning borrowed tools. One of the first things my Dad told me when he put together my first toolkit was never to loan anything to Grandad! I "loaned" him my Cub Scout knife once...once.

I do a good enough job of misplacing my own tools without loaning them.

Inadvertantly--I got one over on my Brother in Law. I didnt think about it till about 2 years after the event. anyway, one time-I was in a pinch and a hurry-ran into a WM-and bought one of those cheaply made made in China--tool chests that were made out of radioactive brittle plastic. OK, they wer helping me relocate back in 08--and I had tosssed that cheapo tool box and the plastic lid shattered into a spiderweb--but stayed in tack. Well, he thought he had busted it somehow and quickly relpaced it. I thought something was wierd when I next saw that tool chest--no cracks. What the heck??? then it daned on me they replacedit when they ran into a store when I was doinga natures call--and replaced the tool box. Well, I had no need for any tools fo anyking for about 2 yeasrs--so never really paid any attention to it--till I wanted to fix my 12-speed bike. It then dawned on me the full story on what happened? Well, about 2 years ago--my brother in law mysteriously found a Black and Decker too box sitting on his work bench in the garage ringht in front of his 1929 Model "A" He brought this inside and askedmy sister if she bought it for him and why? Nope-she denied any knowledge of it. I saw back and watched him ask his three sons if they were the ones--nope--all denied it.He looked at me and I was grinning like a baboon-and I told him about what happened in 08--I felt bad about geetting a free toolbox that Ihad busted--so I replced the free--with a box he needed.

i always make the person borrowing my tools hold the tool in one hand and then a sign that says . "If i don't bring it back i will pay for it" then pull out my cell phone and take a quick picture. Most of my friends bring what they borrow back. But there have been a few that have said no i didn't barrow that when i have to go looking for it. So i pull out my phone and show them the picture. I may have lost a few tools this way but I always end up getting to buy shinny new ones with their money. Having the picture also make it possible to remember who i have loaned what to.

One thing worse than loaning tools and not having them returned, is loaning tools and they are returned broke or misused/bent.
I had a friend at work that did this regularly. His tools were all mismatched second hand stuff. I pride myself with nice tools. He would borrow something, misuse it and return. If he did replace it, it was with some off brand ***. I learned quickly to stop loaning tools.

The problem is not only the fact that you won't get your tools back, if you do get them back, they will most likely be abused, damaged and messed up. (some people think that everything is a hammer))

Like Mickey D. said, if I've borrowed something it was returned cleaned, oiled and sharpened. I don't have so many friends that I can alienate any of them and I darn sure don't need enemies.

Many years ago as a young lad, I "loaned" my well stocked tackle box to my brother to use for a fishing trip.
Months after he returned I had to demand he return my tackle box. He returned it, finally. EMPTY!
Learned my lesson.
Happy to help, but my stuff goes back home with me.
