Lived in Humboldt County for 30 years in a little community called McKinleyville. There was a sign outside of town that read, "Welcome to McKinleyville, where horses have the right of way."
I did of lot of packing with the pack string into the Marble Mountain Wilderness, Trinity Alps Wilderness, and into Redwood National Park during those thirty years.
Unfortunately, those individuals who claim they want to be "one with nature" and who proudly flaunt their bumper stickers that read, "Love Your Mother Earth," on the bumper of their smoke-belching VW vans are the ones who seem to be the biggest offenders.
I have often met backpackers on the trail and have offered to pack their garbage out for them. Still, many times at abandoned campsites, I've found plenty of empty freeze-dried food wrappers, empty butane canisters, and exposed piles of fecal material complete with toilet paper blowing in the wind.
Even cats and monkeys have enough sense to groom themselves, but many of these folks don't seem to share that same wisdom.
It's beautiful country...no doubt about it. Too bad it seems to be going downhill due to many self-proclaimed
"environmentalists."
