Default Ford vs Chevy and Plymouth

I would have a hard time choosing one!!!!! (if I could afford either one)

saw these yesterday at a car show. both were my favs. I like white but the orange was eye grabbing!!!!!

sorry for the blurry photo

not a factory jobber but still a nice body style (meaning the tires. when he started it….the exhaust note was not factory but sounded like it would run like a scalded dawg!!!!!!)

I would take which ever one came with a 3 1/2 inch 27-2

If I had some cash.
Too bad we are spending $8,000 on new windows.
The good bad and expensive.

Well, of those three, the Shelby GT-350 is easily the most valuable, so I'd pick that one!

Thanks for this most generous karma!

Even though I've never been tried nor true to Ford , I'd have to go with the GT350 as well. As I've gotten older I have taken a liking to them and I always liked the one McQueen drove in Bullit. Liked the 68 Charger as well!

My favorite Mustang is the 68 Fastback. wish I would have bought one way back when they were affordable.

I'm going to go out on a limb here...I'd think that if it's a real, matching numbers Shelby GT-350, it's got to be six figures minimum. Just a wild guess....

I do love old Mustangs but if I could choose one from the era it would be a '67 GTO. IMO the best looking of the muscle cars. The GT350s ride like a tank!

As I have a report in previous threads, I have owned a lot of vehicles.
But if I could have just one of them back it would be the Shelby GT-350.

For me, I'd take the '66 Mustang all the way, for that's the year I see here. No, I do NOT believe though that it is a genuine GT-350, "just" a "Tribute" car. WHY? . . .

1. The blue side stripes were the narrower 3M type used on the '66 and later GT-350s. The '65 used slightly wider painted stripes with the 3M GT-350 decal. Once you know the two different looks, it is easy to spot the '66 stripes on THIS car. BUT . . .

2. The car in the photo have the original Mustang 2+2 fastback quarter windows with louvers . . . and ONLY the 1965 GT350 year came with the louvers . . . all 501 of 'em that weren't the racing "R" model. The '66 GT350 had the louver section cut away at Shelby and replaced with plexiglass quarter windows and a custom interior replacement panel to match the hack job.

3. Well then, is this car a 1965 GT-350? Highly unlikely . . . for the side scoops on the quarter panel, just in front of the rear wheel ONLY came on the 1966 GT-350 STREET version. The very few '65-66R (racing) versions though used the scoops AND had big induction holes hidden inside the scoops to duct air to the rear brakes. This car is absolutely not one of the "R" cars.

THUS . . . THIS IS A MUSTANG 2+2 FASTBACK "GT350 'Tribute' car." Otherwise, it is a modified original GT350 and that would lower its value much the same as refinishing a Model 27 revolver!

HERE'S MY 1966 Wimbledon White 289 2+2 Fastback. I got it used in '72 and finally dolled it up like a GT-350 . . . because I liked the way they looked. I removed all the stock '66 Ford trim/badging, put a GT350-style hood scoop on it, put on '66 stripes BUT would NOT cut away the original louvered side windows!!! Thus, I can easily convert it back to a stock 2+2 if I ever desire to.

I also put a GT350 repro gas cap on it and the grill out of a 1965 GT Mustang (exactly like Shelby used for the '65 version.)

Thus . . . I now have what LOOKS like a '65 GT350, albiet the '66 stripe kit that only Shelby diehard fans would even notice. I will never sell "Old Faithful!" 350,000 reliable miles via her 2-bbl V8.

PS: A die-hard mustang expert would reply to my front seats . . . THOSE AREN'T '66 Mustang seats! No they aren't . . . they are out of the very low miles '71 Mustang Grande whose original owners decided to ram into a 2' diameter tree . . . totally their 24K car in '73. My ORIGINAL seats have been stored since that time . . . in perfect shape!

Yep . . . I love the original Mustang body . . . super sleek and sexy! By the '67-'68 year it still used the original windshield but they made the '67 wider/bulkier . . . after all, bigger is better right?

Sorry for the long post. It might benefit someone with the details!

PS: We also took our honeymoon in Oct. 1973 to Gatlinburg and the Smoky Mountain National Park in "Old Faithful!" We started dating on New Years Eve leading into '73 (this photo from that February sitting in my Mustang fastback).

I'm pleased to say BOTH have been faithful and oh so special! I'M A BLESSED MAN INDEED!!!

My apologies for hijacking this thread for a moment . . .

A lot of people love those old muscle cars. Few people remember how much trouble they wee to keep running. If you could get 70,000 miles on a Duster or any Chrysler product in the early 70s, you were lucky. I remember Ford Mustangs that would squeak driving off the lot. The GM muscle cars may have been the best of the bunch.
The union labor in the late 60s and early 70s was not very good. It didn't get better until the Japanese started building cars that would run for 200,000 miles and American companies had to build better cars to survive.

Assuming it's a true Shelby G.T. 350, and not a well done copy. I'm thinking $125,000.00 as a starting point. Unless the market has changed a lot.

I'll be the standout and say I'd rather have the Duster. Loved the MOPARS from the '70's.

Talking It Depends....

If you are talking cars, I always go with Chevy.

If you are talking pick up trucks, I always go with Ford.

For the last 30 years, I have owned only two cars driven 50 miles per week day - the Ford Mustang with a V-8.

Good eye for detail, Tom. I agree completely, that it's a "tribute". Now, about that 2bbl on your '65, a few Cobra bolt-ons wouldn't hurt your reliability. If your gonna talk the talk, you gotta walk the walk.

Only if it’s a documented Shelby, lots of clones out there!

You got to know how to read and decipher Vins and build sheets.

We won a lot of money drag racing my buddys new 68 chevelle SS 375hp/396. That engine was really 425hp it was under rated for insurance purposes.

Can't believe nobody else has mentioned the '67 DZ 302 Camaro Z-28. Sure they had spartan interiors and no frills like the Mustang but what an engine and suspension package. Even considering the lousy rubber available at that time they handled like a real track car out of the factory. I remember watching a '67 Corvette roadster with a hi-po 327 get smoked by a DZ-302 Camaro on a very windy canyon road, on the first stretch with enough room to pass the Camaro went around the Vette and from that point on it was all over. No other American V8 at that time could rev like the little mouse 302. I nearly bought a very tired '67 Z-28 when I got out of the Army in '73, I needed a dependable daily driver and the 11:1 compression ratio was already having problems with pump gas, I passed on the deal and kicked myself in years to come. I think the '67 Corvette roadster is still one heck of a car. I helped a buddy restore one and learned alot about their construction and common parts that exchanged with other GM cars, found they weren't so expensive to operate, unlike a Porsche. In my opinion '67 was the last good year for American Muscle, engines never sounded better, solid lifters, high compression, high octane fuel. I'll admit that some of the new stuff sounds pretty good but not as raw and visceral as the engines of the late 60's.
A good friend of mine built a very pretty '67 Mustang Fastback, which was really a pretty car in its day...I'll agree. He is a professional mechanic and spare no expense on the subframe and suspension, he basically rebuilt everything from the ground up, all the best...built a monster 351 facimile GT40 engine, 5 or 6 spd Tremec, electronic controlled cut-outs, its magnificient, he figures he'd have to get 40 grand for it but hasn't decided to sell yet, his twin brother built a '68 SS Camaro the same way, ground up...much rather have the Camaro. A guy walked up to him at Goodguys a couple of years ago and asked him if it was for sale. My buddy said "Everything is for sale", the guy said "How about 35grand?" My buddy said "You haven't even drove it yet." The guy said "I can tell by the way it looks that its what I want, do you want check or cash?" The funny thing is that right after he agreed to sell it to the guy and was sitting back basking in his sudden success with the car still there waiting for the guy to come back with the cash a gal came up and started gushing all over about his beautiful car and asked him "Is it for sale?" He said "I'm sorry, but I just sold it." She said "I'll give you 5 grand more than the other offer, I love this car." He had to tell her that a deal was a deal and she obviously wasn't used to getting turned down because he turned her pretty head and flounced off.

Drove one of those @ 73. Went on a hoot to the Chevy dealer in Redwood city to "test drive" it. Didn't have a dime to my name, but the salesman didn't know that.

Some day... that's a car I'd really like to own!

I always liked the look of the Mustang 2+2 fastbacks. That said, have always been a Chevy guy. Parts are easier to find, and GM offered a lot of different appealing platforms.

Apart from a 1965 GTO in high school, I have owned / restored a couple Camaros, a couple Vettes, and a 1957 2 door Chevy 210 with a 327 / 4 speed.

My last Camaro (pics attached) started out as a 1969 puke green 6 cyl, 3 speed car. When I finished it, it had a 427, modified turbo 400 tranny, and 12 bolt rear. That car was a scary blast to drive...

Nice thing about the older cars is, even though the absolute reliability of the newer cars is not there, they are easy to work on. A small tool box in the trunk, along with some duck tape has got me home many a time where a modern car would have stranded me.

I've done decided if i win the Lottery it will be a Plymouth
SuperBird with the Hemi. You know, the one with the Big
Wing on back that dominated Nascar and was outlawed
one year later.
They are'nt very economical but I sure would look good
crusin' around on the weekend in one.

I wish I could find a picture of it but, I can't remember exactly what year it was. When I was just out of high school, there was a man a few blocks away from me, selling his late 60's/early 70's (can't remember exactly) Cobra Jet Mustang for $3k because he was in the military and being shipped off overseas. He couldn't take it with him and didn't want to store it for that long.
What I do remember about it is, it was white with 2 wide emerald green stripes down the center of the hood, roof and trunk. It had a factory installed roll cage which the interior was actually molded around rather than it being added in after the fact. It had cooling scoops for the front and rear brakes and of course, the ram air intake.
I couldn't buy it because although my parents had agreed to pay half of whatever car I decided on...............absolutely refused to help me buy a hot rod.

Ahhh, the memories! When I had this car and hair.

302 block with 351 Cleveland heads (BOSS 302 set up) and a Mustang II front end with shock towers cut out to squeeze the headers through.

I sold her in 1991 because I had no where to keep her after restoring in 1984.

Luckily a little ole lady fell in love with the car and put more into then I did. Plus the fact she loved to go fast!

As I was considering early retirement (result happily landed) and wanting to get back into a play car having toyed with mid-60's Vette's some years ago I was looking though not yet seriously. I did not want to spend a lot nor wanted a pristine car. I also did not care who made it. By the misfortune of my FIL's funeral I ran into an opportunity. I bought it sight unseen, only photos and good words. What I got was this shown sitting in my Texas garage after transport from SoCal.

A numbers matching 351 Cleveland 4 barrel, 4 speed with A/C '73 Mach 1. It came with a pile of receipts indicating about everything replaced/restored mechanical and cosmetic but the front suspension and steering. I saw it for the first time a few weeks ago, some two months after purchase. A Mustang model oft neglected but still bargains IMO and really not a whole lot longer or heavier than some of the earlier cars. Upon retirement next year and in a effort to keep the engine/tranny whole and original it will receive a stroked 427 Windsor and either a 5 or 6 speed Tremec. It will be a fun toy to play with. Oh, and yes, my 16 year old shown is pretty darn pleased with the purchase.
