Range visit gone really bad.
Hi there everyone, this is about the "slippery slope" I've been warned about. Went to the range Friday around noon to test out my newly purchased High Standard Supermatic Citation Military I had just purchased. Tore down all the targets on the backers and put up my own and went to the trash can to deposit said targets. The trash can is up a slope about ten yards up from the bench's and it had been raining and it's very slippery on the grass and I knew it. Anyhoo on the way back down I slipped, my left leg went under me and I heard a loud "pop" from it as I hit the ground. Great pain and I could not get up, dragged myself to one of the roof uprights and pulled myself upright let go and with screaming pain in the leg went right back down. Well a passer by stopped and seen me flopping around on the ground and asked me what was wrong told him and he called the ambulance for me. Another young couple came out to shoot and was kind enough to load my gear in my car for me and locked it. Got my ambulance ride to the emergency room, X-ray's and such and no broken bones and said I had "soft tissue damage" and off to the Orthopedic Doctor hopefully on Monday to see how bad I grenaded my knee. Issued me crutch's but as far as I'm concerned they are a unusable death device and I'm using a "walker" to get around the house after a fashion, what fun! A buddy of mine retrieved my car and gear for me. What a stupid way to put myself out of commission, at least I didn't shoot myself! Anyway, beware the "slippery slope!

OUCH!!!
I've blown out my knee twice. The last time was 25 years ago when I was 30.
Both times it swelled up like a football and I couldn't put long pants on. Both times it took months to heal.
Lucky me I've had no problems since.
I hope you didn't do permanent damage and heal up good as new.

Though I'm sorry to hear about your knee, it does give us hope for humankind. At least there were folks around to help you, call for help, show enough respect for you and your belongings to secure them, etc. The alternative I suppose would have been to use you for target practice after the zombies started chewing on you and then steal all of your stuff.
Get well soon: plenty of rest, keep it elevated and follow your doctor's advice.

Good luck with that. About four years ago had the same happen. Was in the yard fixing a sprinkler head. I was at my heaviest. Nothing to help myself up with and gave it a power surge. Same deal. It WILL NOT get better on its own. You will have to get surgery but it aint bad.

Ouch! Sometimes Life seems like a throw of the dice at any given time. Godspeed on the recovery.
FWIW - You can use that walker at the range for a hasty bench-rest platform!

Lovin' the idea of using the walker as a rest!! If I were you, I'd put a prototype or two together and submit it for a "Shark Tank" episode!

1 1/2 years ago I slipped on the ice and my feet went out from under me and I came down with my left foot under my right hip. Since I was at home AI was able to crawl into the house, and being stupid took some pain killers and vegged out in the recliner all day Sunday. On Monday, after many pain killers, I went to the clinic, hobbling with my cane, and x-rays confirmed two cracks in the fibula. It didn't have to be casted, but I had t wear a "boot" for 6 weeks. One advantage, we were flying to AZ the next week, and I got to board the plane early with the handicapped.

Vulcan Bob, I hope you heal fast. I had ankle fusion surgery four weeks ago and have been on crutches since......hopefully I will get a walking boot device by Thanksgiving. You are right, the crutches are a danger in and of themselves. However, since I have been warned not to put ANY weight on my foot/ankle I have to live with them. Hang in there and take it easy.

I was pushing a heavily loaded wheelbarrow uphill once when my right calf muscle let go. Felt like quivering jello. Was limping around for a couple weeks with ace bandages wrapped around. Fortunately no surgery. It's amazing what kind of abuse we subject ourselves to.
Hope you get better fast. Crutches never worked well for me either.

Hey Bob, Hope nothing is ripped or torn inside the knee. Take it easy and be a good patient, do what the Doc says.
Take care

I HATE it......
I HATE it when that kind of **** happens. Especially if your older and you know it ain't gonna every heal right. But surgery techniques are light years beyond what was even available 20 years ago.

Well, at least it's not a bone. I've torn the ACL in my left knee. Let me tell you, while it hurt a lot at first, it doesn't hurt anywhere near as much as when I broke my right femur.
Funny thing is, a friend here did the same thing just this morning too. He was walking up a canyon and slipped and blasted his right knee. I loaned him my crutches.
I hope both of you heal up well.

Don't know much about knee injuries. Have experience w/ ankle injuries. Do what you are told by those who actually know what they are talking about, i.e., the doctor and rehab people. Ignore those who offer the equivalent of shadetree medical advice. Get well soon! Sincerely. brucev.

Yowtch. I'm just coming out the other side of a (relatively minor) knee problem I picked up in July - I hope your problem heals swiftly and well.

Sorry for your misfortune...Hope you heal well. I've had knee surgery for torn miniscus, it was done through a couple holes instead of cut open. I've tried everything to help with the pain and found that what I'm doing right now seems to have the best effect. I'm walking from 3-5 miles every other day and taking Nattokinase in the morning and evening, drinking a ton of water, the goal is at least 60 ounces daily more in the summer. My knee still swells slightly after my walks but is not painful, a little stiff the following day but nothing compared to how it felt before I started this program.

Had my first-ever 'real' knee hurt this past Spring.(age 56) Was coming in on a friend's boat on a rough/windy day to dock. I jumped from the pitching boat deck to a pitching floating dock to assist.
Heard/felt a minor 'pop', but it didn't really hurt. Next day and for a few months, all kind of swelling and pain.
hard not to think that just a FEW years ago, it would have been a non-event.

Hope your recovery is quick. Crutches take a little getting used to but once you get the knack they are very easy. Trying going up stairs with that walker.
My range is usually deserted and I have gotten in the habit of always taking my phone with me (I normally leave it at home when I go out, old guy habits). I've gotten to where I worry that some medical emergency might leave me someplace where nobody but the buzzards will find me.
