Okay, so I'm old-fashioned in some ways.
How nice! I just watched the pre-game ceremony for game one of the World Series. Trisha Yearwood sang the National Anthem PERFECTLY STRAIGHT. No vocal tricks, odd phrasing or posturing. Just sang it, very nicely, with the hand not holding the microphone over her heart. Call me a sentimental old fool, but I found that really refreshing.

I thoroughly agree. There used to be a fellow that did a radio show around here. He referred to such gyrations as "urban yodeling", a nice term of art.
The anthem should be about the anthem itself, the country, and our shared patriotism. It should not used as a showcase for a singer's ability to modulate their voice.
If someone can't take themselves outside their want to self aggrandize, they should stick to making pop tunes and stay away from our shared national touchstones.

My wife commented how moving and dignified Trisha's rendition was. Made us proud to be Americans.

I gave you a like on that one solely because of the outrageous nerve of the post.
Yearwood strikes me as a classy young lady as well as a fine singer. But I like her even more after this.

Dang, I missed it. It is good to know and hear someone sing our National Anthem the way it should be done. Seems like everybody wants to do their own version and style of the song and in most cases they sure don't do justice to the song.
Hooray for Trisha Yearwood.

I'm not much of an athletic supporter. I googled Ms. Yearwood and found her singing. Your correct. The best I've heard in a longtime. Good on her.

Some things you just don't mess with and our National Anthem with all its dignity and pride is one of them!! Rosanne Barr shouldn't be allowed to walk into a room where our Anthem is being performed! Thank you Trisha Yearwood, and thank you Shouldazagged for the post.

It seems like most "singers" that sing it today try to jazz it up or turn it into hip-hop our soul etc. They don't seem to understand the concept that the song isn't about THEM. It's not for them to add their styling to. It's about demonstrating love and respect of The United States of America and the flag that is our symbol.
Ms Yearwood absolutely nailed it and she did it with the proper respect and in the way it was written and intended to be sung...always.
Gave me goose bumps!

Ms. Yearwood should be commended for her respectful and beautiful rendition. Good call commenting on it Mike.
If sung properly our National Anthem should bring a tear to your eyes.
Sadly, too many versions bring a tear to my eyes for entirely different reasons. I have little tolerance for personal interpretation or artistic flair of our nation's song. It is meant to be song as written with humility, reverence and dignity. PERIOD!

Many years ago the St. Louis Cardinals were playing the Montreal Expos in Montreal. As they sang our national anthem they scrolled the words on the scoreboard. When they came to the last phrase, "...and the home of the brave?", the Cardinals broadcaster, Jack Buck, erupted. He did not realize that the last line is a question (is the flag still there?). He stormed off the air. I guess someone explained it to him and he came back but didn't mention it again. Without thinking he had thought they were questioning whether we really were the land of the brave.
