Very interesting about Gen George S.Patton jr, and Chesty Puller.
I was reading an interesting articleon what happened in the Civi War on this date, and though not partof the article--was part of a comment made. I never knew that Patton and Puller--were 1st Cousins! Anyone know more on that????

Google confirms the relationship, but it says they were 2nd cousins:
Encyclopedia Virginia: Puller, Lewis Burwell Chesty (1898?1971)

I read Puller's biography, and don't recall that information.

Yep. If you look at both of their personalities, capabilities, and so forth, you'll find that both men had far more in common than one might believe.
Both were hard nosed, stubborn, arrogant leaders whose men would (and quite often did) follow them through the gates of Hades.
I don't know if they ever met. I've never seen that they did. But I would've loved to have been a fly on the wall at a their meeting. I don't think they would have gotten along...they were the same man in different forms.
Both revered in their perspective branches of service.

Too bad General Patton died in that "crash". Can you picture General Butler and General Patton waging war against North Korea and the Chicoms! Things sure would of turned out real BAD for China.

I have read much on both these great officers and from what I have seen they never met.

I read his son's book "Fortunate Son" in which he described his dad weeping at his bed side. Chesty was human. I was living in Virginia when Louis Puller ended his own life. A very sad day for Viet Nam Veterans.

My cousin was a 34 year Active Marine. He was an E9(MGS)and had been there done it. He told me a lot about Chesty, of course I have also read a bit.
My next door neighbor went from the beaches of Normandy into Germany and served under Patton for a while. He had lots of good to say about him. I can remember well that he told me about Patton’s rather interesting voice back in the early 70s. That was the first time I ever heard about it and it was decades later till I heard/saw it mentioned again.

A few years ago--a friend of mine found the audio of Pattons real speech--the Grease the treads of our tanks-shoveling sheepdip in Louisiana--speech) and his voice was kind of nasily and high-pitched. However, id never say that to his face or behind his back. :-))

Know a guy from Columbus, GA. He was a teen just prior to the war.
He said George Patton was do given to profanity that the local radio stations gave up on allowing him to talk on the radio.
The Columbus guy got drafted , went from Company clerk to First Sergeant. But that's another thread!

Both attended the Virginia Military Institute for a year. Patton went on to West Point, Chesty enlisted in the Marines. Both had grandfathers who were Virginia officers that were killed during the War of Northern Aggression. Both grew up hearing war stories from former Confederates.
Both were aggressive leaders that could inspire love and hate from their men.

Yep, we used to say that every night while at the (boot camp) rifle range. Haven't heard that in years.

I heard old Chesty lived in the San Diego area. And if a Marine knocked on his door, Mrs Puller would invite them in and the General would talk to the young Marines for hours. Probably hoist a few beers too.

When Chesty was retired, he moved back home to West Point, Virginia. Marines of all ages used to go by his house on US 17 and all were welcome.
Chesty did know George Marshall. Marshall was the commander of the Army War College in the '30s when Chesty attended.

Yes, I found it very good. I have read a lot about Patton and I learned a few things from it.
I have thought for decades he was "offed" by people running this countries government and this book certainly reinforces my belief.
War was over and his talents were not needed anymore.

I read a couple of O'Reilly's other "Killing" books and he gives you different scenarios of what MAY have happened.

I heard that soemwhere too. Also, from a friend who grew up as an "Army brat" he told me the same thing about General Frank D. Merrill. This guy lived across the street from the General. He and some of the neighborhood kids use to spend time with the Genreal when he was around.

I really can't and don't believe that. But then I'm a devout skeptic about almost all conspiracy theories. Most remind me of the days when the barber shop always had a copy of the Police Gazette lying around, and it invariably had an article claiming Hitler was alive and living in Argentina.
And Oliver Stone should have done hard time for what he did to the history of the Kennedy assassination. Making that idiot Garrison a hero was an overflowing crock of sewage.

After retirement DDE would sit on his porch in Gettysburg and shoot cats with a .22.

Can you even imagine what Chesty, or Patton would say about our present situation.....Pulling out before the job is finished. Not to mention leaving with out victory....They were both natural warriors. a vanishing breed...O' our troops are as good or better than most, however they take orders, they don't make decisions....Pulling defeat from the jaws of victory seems to be the trend nowadays..Not the troops fault that is for sure....fight to win or don't fight at all.....

My heroes are Chesty Puller and Chuck Yaeger.
I really enjoyed the mini series PACIFIC but they shorted the Chesty Puller story.
