Default Pumpkin Carving Season!

I figured you guys may enjoy these... I did 7 last year, but I can't stand there for that many hours carving anymore, so I cut it back to 4. The last one is always a struggle. Enjoy!

My hat is off to you! I know how to use a knife for something other than cutting meat, etc. But, what you do is beyond me! Where did you learn how to do such work?

Thank you!

I first started doing these carvings in 2009. Honestly, what I do is buy pumpkin carving kits after Halloween for like 75% off (the little knives they come with actually work fairly well). Three of these are stencils from store bought pattern books that I take and use scissors and modify, and then just minimally freehand as needed during the transfer (since the stencil is square, but the pumpkin is round and bumpy). Then I go and cut out the stencil in the pumpkin. And after that is all done, I go back and back cut the pulpy shadow regions and trim the curves and points to let more light through and bring out the detail.

The Nosferatu one is just a direct print out and transfer of the still from the movie onto the pumpkin with a bit of free handing for the dome and edges. And I try to do a couple of older designs I have done before, and then throw in a few new ones. If you see pictures of ones I have done previous years, no two carvings of the same pattern look identical. Sometimes the ribs of the pumpkins play hardball, or the texture inside makes various intricate cuts harder.

A friend of mine in Tenn. carves things for a living, pumpkins being one of his favorites.

He brings the whole concept to a new level.

Have a look...

Those are great. I like the ghoulish grim reaper guy going up the stairs the most. The shadows created behind him makes it even more ominous, just like it would on a staircase wall.

My son just came in third in his town in a carving contest. This is a growing contest in all the towns here.

Thumbs up

I am not in the league of carving pumpkins with such finesse as displayed but one of my favorite things is carving them together with my beautiful children (who are now in their 20's but still get a kick out of it) and my Mom (88) each year up at our "cabin" in Wisconsin. It seems that simple pleasures are indeed still among the best!
