Wish there were less " Debbie Downers " on the forum
One of my favorite bits on SNL is Debbie Downer. It's really hilarious and it's always a challenge for the actors to get through the skit without laughing. Everyone is having a good time and then Debbie says something that just ruins it for everyone.
What's not so funny is we have our own Debbie Downers. Someone can be sharing something they like or would like to see made and Debbie Downer shows up with a negative comment and ruins it for everyone.
I think many of us are at different stages of collecting and different things appeal to different people. I'm not talking about comments such as "I prefer stainless" or "I prefer 40 s&w" etc, but "that's junk" , etc. is just mean.
Sometimes the golden rule is the best way to go.
A little less Debbie Downers would be nice for everyone.

OK for you to say but that isn't gonna help all the starving children in Africa that have Ebola.
And only have dial up internet.

If you want to truly experience piddling on others parades, visit any of the AK or AR forums. There's always a contingent of closet commandos and Internet tough guys eagerly waiting to spew gratuitous criticism on someone without provocation.

I really enjoy reading (and participating in) the threads here.
But sadly, I admit to utilizing the "ignore" option for a few members because many of their posts to me, are just over the top for one reason or another.

I have petitioned both the American Bar Association and all the state bar associations I am a member of for an "ignore" button for certain opposing counsel and clients.

Some people always need to be negative. Once I started a thread about hockey. The words "hockey" and "Stanley Cup" were contained in the title.
Someone took the time to post:
"I don't like hockey" in that thread.
What compelled him to open the thread and make that post is beyond me. There are lots of threads. Find one (or start one) that interests you. Otherwise, what do you care what other people talk about?

Arik, you see that the person you're ignoring has posted but not the content of the post; the forum tells you the post is hidden because you're ignoring the person. You can click a button to see the post after all, if you'd care to do so.

When you (not the personal "you." but the general "you") post something online, especially social media which is what this forum is, EVERYBODY has an opinion and some post it. You have to take the good with the bad. Grow a thick skin or don't post.
I'll give an example pertaining to firearms: what one person's sporterized milsurp is another person's bubba. Post one of those and everybody has an opinion.

What about it? The 1st amendment doesn't exist on a privately run/owned forum and we are allowed here at the pleasure of whomever has the final say on whatever forum we happen to be posting on.

Something like that. I had to do that with one person a few months ago. They post a topic or reply--you dont see it--just their name saying your ignoring them.

As I said, I have used the ignore button for a few folks here. Partially because all of their posts strike a nerve with me. But also, and perhaps more importantly, so I don't stoop to their level and reply! For me, it acts as a good form of self control for days when I'm in a "monkey see, monkey do" mood and my filter is on the fritz.

I don't see the "downers" on this forum like I do on many others I've posted on over the years. People are allowed their opinions whether we want to read it or not is our choice. Internet posts can & will be read by anyone so get a thick skin, grow a pair or whatever.

You don't have to post every idea that pops into your head.
I believe the spirit of the OP is that the Debbie Downers of the world don't add anything to a discussion and are a waste of bandwidth. It's not about having thin or thick skin.
For an excellent example of the above, see the " S&W Revolvers: 1980 to the Present" Forum. There you will find a Sticky entitled " Bashing, Crying, and Whining". In no uncertain terms it forbids complaints about the newer features of modern S&W revolvers. If you can't stand these modern features, you are cordially invited to visit one of the other Forums. But don't hang around bashing, crying, and whining.

An opinion, good or bad, adds to the discussion. How can it not?

I don't go in that forum, but I'll take your word for it.
By posting my opinions/feelings/thoughts, I'm adding to the discussion, I think.

Have you ever read a thread about the New England Patriots, talk about downers showing up. Brutality at its finest.

I clicked on your post anyway to see what you said this time, Erich. Good stuff here.
Just kiddin', man. Seriously, I didn't know how the ignore feature worked, and I'm glad I do now.
By the way, apropos of nothing, there should be some rule about having an Arik and an Erich in the same post. It's too confusing to keep track of who is who.

I like the Debbie skits too, lowriderfxr. They always remind me, though, of an SNL sketch from back in the 70s about medicating your pets, and used the terms "puppy uppers" and "doggie downers."
I agree with you, by the way. There's a difference between expressing an honest different opinion in a thread, and using mean language to do so. I think the language part is what you're referring to, and not to the fact that someone who posts might simply be differing with the OP.
Reminds me of the old maxim about, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything."
(The "Southern Lady" version of that is, "If you can't say something nice, come sit next to me."

I reckon I must of been frequenting some awful forums?
I haven't seen/experienced what the O P has here, at least not yet!
This forum has the most respectful members of any I've had the pleasure to exchange ideas and occasional jibes with.

Negative and Positive Must Co-Exist.
People new to guns and CCW are sometimes brimming with wrong, even dangerous information, stuff that can get them hurt or land them in the clink, and which they heard from their brother's best friend's neighbor who lives next door to a cop who is the brother-in-law of a retired sheriff's deputy. For these people, we politely extend a guiding hand and share our experience with them.
If you want to instill safe and legally correct information in someone's skull (the positive), oftentimes you must first tear down what's already there in order to make room (the negative).
For me, obnoxious negativity enters the equation when people lose their objectivity and launch thinly veiled personal attacks against posters, their firearms and thought process. I withhold the "like" button from negative people who can't seem to function in polite society and I avoid overheated threads altogether.

Everyone I've run across on this forum has been respectful, even when I make a mistake.
Thank goodness I have not run into:

Yeah but at least you probably have a prescription to fix it!

IMHO Debbie Downers most often look at things from a realistic perspective. THAT is what should scare you.

This silly thread made me sad and I do not like anyone who participated in it.

Nailed it, federali. It happens far less often here than on the forums I left behind when I found this one, but occasionally it does.
I know some Debbie Downers (I started to write "DD's" and thought better of it. I've known some of those too, but that's another story.)
On the other hand, if my late mother had been in San Francisco immediately after the 1906 earthquake she would have been saying, "But just look how much they'll save on urban renewal!" That also could drive me crazy.

I like the Debby Downers. Its refreshing to know that there are people on this forum more miserable than me.

Yeah, there are some...
But most people (I know I do) try to give the positive points before pointing out a negative. A balanced approach is best.
One forum that guarantees instant vitriol if there is something that can be read or even misconstrued as 'greenhorn' is the Reloading Forum. I know that safety is ultimate but it's a place where you'd better be very careful of how your post is worded. It can be judge and jury determining very quickly that someone is unfit to reload. I think setting somebody straight is fine but waiting like a trap door spider to pounce on people is just non-constructive. I know members tire of people coming on and wanting to know which powder and bullets to buy and start reloading, but EACH one deserves a chance to get on the rails.

Well here is a downer. Alabama just fumbled on their own 5 yard line with the score tied and just over a minute left in the game.
