Well after 49 years I'd simply ask. Might as well get her what she really wants.

I admit it freely, I've got feelings. I spend lots of time trying to think of, and find the perfect gift for my wife only to have her say: "Oh, that's sweet...where's the receipt?" Now, I just buy her small stuff (perfume, small electric blanket, house shoes, etc.), and tell her to get herself something nice from me. Eh, romance, shmomance, this way she gets what she wants, and I don't get my feelings hurt.

Best of luck,

Dave

My wife has two of everything so I just give her my Christmas bonus. After 31 years, I stopped killing myself over it.

I bought my wife 10 gift certificates for a massage at the massage place in our local mall. She loved it!

I would have given her one and kept the other nine for myself.

I once bought my wife a gift certificate for her and a friend for a day at a spa. The darned thing closed a week later; before she could go.

I've been married 20 years and have yet to select a good present for her.

I'm always at a loss on what to buy my wife for Christmas too. This year she suggested a gift certificate to some outfit inside JC Penny she gets her makeup from. Now all I have to do is wander around a JC Penny until I find a Sonoma place or something spelled similar. Wish me luck as I'm venturing into unknown territory here.
Seriously something she likes that sells gift certificates is always nice.

My other two favorites have been Pajama gram and Vermont Teddy bear. I've got my wife PJs she really liked plus an Angel Teddy and RN teddy when she graduated. Pricey but well received too. She has the bears displayed and wears the PJs so must have worked.
Also Cabelas apparel has worked before and especially a pair of winter boots she put on their want list one year which made it easy.
I've done the bears enough but may do more PJs this year too. They are darned hard to shop for though.

Good advice. My wife of 42 years wants a No No (as seen on TV) to get rid of some facial hair. I don't even notice it, but the facial hair bugs her.

But to just come outright and surprise your wife on Christmas Day may lead to some unexpected retribution.

After 49 years I bet what she would want most is "room service". Most women like to get out some.

We've built 2 new houses over the years (not for Christmas) and the first one I piped and wired for Central Vac, so for Christmas one year I bought her the motor, hoses and attachments. Other years I've given pearls, diamond earrings, furniture, 31 years of "happy wife happy life" attempts. The only gift in 31 years that brought tears to her eyes was the year I got her the Central Vac stuff, go figure...

Jack, after all those years it's tough to pick an gift. Here's what I do for my lady. I pick up a few small gifts, lotions, nice soap and things like that. Then I fill an envelope with cash and let her get what ever she wants. I now it sounds crass, but no worries about me picking the wrong gift.

P.s I do think the honey due list is a neat idea.

Well, since you asked, and no budget was specified.....

Since you're coming up on your 50th anniversary in the coming year, perhaps consider making her Christmas present this year a "trip of a lifetime" for the two of you to celebrate your anniversary at, or around, the time it arrives.

You know, a cruise, or an exotic destination, or a tour of some National Parks, train trip in the Northern Rockies, that type of thing. I don't know what she, and the two of you, like to do of that nature, but it seems this is a prime opportunity for you to make it a Christmas present to remember.

Or maybe ACC tournament tickets.

I'm only at marriage year 33 and still learning about gifts.

Go to a 4-5 star resort. Reservations in their best restaurant the first night there. TWO desserts. Lunch by the pool. Reservations in the SPA for 2+ hours.

The bill at check-out will hurt really bad, but that weekend memory will last her another 49 years.

I'm not familiar with Winston-Salem, but you might have to drive 2-5 hours to get to a world class resort.

Greenbriar in WV, Grove Park in Asheville NC or something similar.

The actual gift under the tree will be a nice I.O.U. card. SHE picks the destination and month to go. She will be telling her friends and kids for a long time about the trip.

If you got the time shop around at all the antique stores and see if you can find a old large logo Griswold iron skillet, that is LNIB condition. Wow, I bet she'd love it.

Heres a couple of photos of the Difficult One. In one of them she`s happy with a stupid box of donuts, of course she got other things also, but I think she really liked the donuts the best. Now that you see her maybe some more ideas will be forthcoming- at least I hope so.Thanks in advance, jack

49 years and only one possible thing I can think of, a M49 Smith and Wesson.

My wife got a 40 FN HP onher 40th BD and a M 58 in .41 mag in her 41st

All can think of at this time.

Seriously, jewelry is always a big hit. Last year, I got my wife of 14 years a necklace w/ both her birthstone & our daughters. One year, I got her ,among other things, some vintage handkerchiefs and had them monogrammed. She loved them and still carries them.

Other than that, there has to be a bed and breakfast or resort hotel local to you that she'd love.

Hot air balloon ride. Great gift - special moment when you leave the ground on a cool very early morning and even more special once your up and it's quiet, with the sun coming up and the world opening up before you....great time that she would really enjoy
IMHO.

A gift card from an upscale jewelry store. They really work in January when most stores have a sale. After 49 years you are supposed to know what she likes.

I know now it is really easy for me. Pandora jewelry (charms for a bracelet), oversize fleece sweatshirts, overstuffed slippers, or fancy blouse / sweater / top.

EDIT: What got the most excitement was when she found she had a Craftsman rollaway tool box. It had to go someplace because she didn't have a garage. Still in the front room with extra TV, loaded ammo, primers, powder, and Craftsman top chest and rollaway. We are really cheap on cards. She goes to the card drawer and pulls out the collection for current occasion: birthdays, Christmas, Easter, anniversary; end of the week all cards go back in drawer until needed again. Usual celebration is steak & shrimp on the grill.

I'm disappointed in you guys! Was hoping someone would post that you asked her and she said: "Aw, honey, don't get me anything", and YOU ACTUALLY DID THAT! Then, the money you would have spent on a gift was spent on hospital bills! Guess whose?

a copy of her favorite book

Maybe a hand written poem about her on some nice stationery in a nice frame

One year we ran into each other at the drug store after picking out anniversary cards for each other (separate vehicles unplanned). Looked at each other's choices, quick hug and smootch, back on the shelf they went. Saved over $10 that year!

Default Christmas for her

After 51 years, I still haven't gotten it right yet!
I can, however suggest some things not to give:
Meat slicer, the one I proudly presented 35 or 40 years ago, went to Goodwill a couple of years ago, still in the original box. Unopened.
Reorganize the kitchen cabinets: Never in your last minute despair for a gift idea, re arrange her kitchen cabinets, I did, put em in alphabetical order, and by sizes, BAD mistake! I almost didn't live that one down.
There are hundreds more, but, you
get the idea, generally speaking, anything you think is a good gift----------- AINT!!
Cash seems to be well received, and asking for a Christmas list is helpful,---sometimes, but, don't be surprised if you hear a comment like, "You knew what I wanted,I mentioned it last June!! And, frequently accompanied by tears.......

I saw where S&W just won a Govt contract to supply new handguns to the Army. Maybe some S&W stock would be good,,, but I still need something to unwrap. Please keep those good suggestions coming,

The women is your Queen, take her someplace and treat her like royalty. All we have is memories that mean anything, stuff means nothing and gets set aside and covered with dust. Memories stay fresh as the day they happened.

I'm at 33 years. We are blessed and basically get what we want when we want it but we do live well within our means. We have agreed not to get gifts for each other. Every now and then, I'll get a really good idea of something I know she will like or that she expressed interest in but has not yet gotten. When that happens, I do go ahead and break our rule but mostly, I just make sure to make it a good day. Currently, that means that I make sure my daughter brings the grandsons over the house or that I take her to their house. At this point in our lives, that puts the biggest smile on her face.

It isn't always about buying something expensive or extravagant. Stop and think about what she has said to you. It could ba as simple as breakfast in bed. A dozen roses. A full body massage with no strings attached given by you. What we really want is to recognized for our hard work in taking care of you, children, and home. Stop and think, because I promise you she has mentioned things she would like but then said they were too expensive or she let it go for someone else's wants or needs. It doesn't have to be big but it does need to be about her.
