Default will TV be dead in 15 years?

Reading this and thinking it may be true. Certainly they will have canceled everyone's favorite show by then. It's like having your favorite Smith dropped from production

I think it's already dead, more than 200 channels and nothing to watch.

Yep, nothing but advertisements. Wish they would let us pick channels rather than having to buy a package. Lots of channels just don't fit my lifestyle

Well, I imagine the CEO of Netflix sure hopes its dead.
I doubt it will happen, still
Too much money involved in it.
Hopefully it will evolve into something better by then.
Not holding my breath for that, though.

Nothing but kardashians too--every time I cruised through the channels--that IDIOTIC show was on the station I passed.

I'm old enough to remember when we subscribed to cable to get HBO and no commercials..

That sure turned into a joke...

Also remember when Radio and TV had to petition the FCC to allow them to go from 30 second commercial breaks to a minute.

Default FCC Partly To Blame

Not too long ago, the FCC increased the minutes per hour that a station may devote to commercials. I fight back by recording everything and fast-forwarding through the commercials. We also rarely watch network TV.

Yet another nail in the coffin of network TV is that they are running out of ideas. There are just so many situations they can portray and they have done them all, including situations that may not be discussed here in the forum.

For what the cable companies charge we should be able to choose our channels. Hate to tell how old I am but I remember when TV was free.

I'm to the point when I'm watching football I work a crossword during the all too frequent and inane commercial coverage. I am also convinced that these "reviews" ,which are for the most part wasted dead time, were fabricated to allow advertisers to get more commercials in.
I spend less and less time watching TV every year.

Ive been saying soemthing like that for 20 years. More like--charge by the number of stations a person wants. for me--it MIGHT be maybe 20?? Let me choose the ones I want--no minimum or maximum limit. I figure that my cable bill might be between $20-$30 monthly.

I doubt it, only because of sports. Those TV deals bring the major sports leagues way too much money.

I find I watch mostly old movies on TV. Most of the shows are uninteresting and poorly done rehashes of old shows, or stupid reality shows. Seems like everything is either a reality or cop show. The commercials are getting more trashy (especially the drugs that address a certain issue) and more insulting to my intelligence.

Every time I see a show that catches my interest, it is gone after a season (Firefly). Eureka lasted 5, which is unusual.

I keep toying with the idea of dropping cable and getting what I want off iTunes or Netflix, but I am suspicious that the video quality will be degraded. There isn't enough bandwidth for everyone to stream shows at the same time.

I mostly use the On-Demand service, but now they disable the fast forward so you can't skip the commercials. The DVR is the only way to avoid the commercials now, but its too much work to set it up to record everything I want.

Well justjim, if we equate "wasteland" and "dead" as one and the same, then we are in the former already, and the latter, is right next door.

Well, Ringo, take heart. "Jersey Shore" is no more. "Real Housewives Of Some Damn Burg" shows are down. And thanks to "Mama June's" marital breakup and disturbing choice of a boyfriend, the loathsome "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" has been cancelled.

There's still plenty of repulsive crud out there, but a few of the most noxious shows are gone or on the edge of the abyss.

On the other hand, now there's s 24/7 channel with nothing but those stupid "judge shows", and Springer is still on.

There is much work to be done.

I think broadcast TV will live on as will radio, particularly in dense population markets. Earlier mentioned was remembering free TV. Still is. I get CBS, NBC and ABC (picture rivals hi-def cable) and dozens of others with a digital antenna.

I would love to get cable a la carte. FOX News, FX and AMC... done. I can get other programming with a digital antenna and Netflix for On Demand.

Maybe there are FCC laws or something standing in the way, but I'm surprised the cable operators have let Netflix run away with On Demand content. Seems like the guys with the actual pipeline coming into the home would be on top and in control. Jazz up the Xfinity OD menus, add more content... Netflix would be in a world of hurt.

I know it will not happen since any channels are available in packaged deals. However, if I wer a big wig with one of these companies--I think id start changing my tone on that if possible/

I really got disturbed by the show cancellations especially when it was a favorite like Hill street Blues. I heard most shows will only go five years because that is when the actors can negotiate new contracts. Get rid of the old shows and put on new junk.

Wonder what the future holds for us and what programs will be offered? Tell you what, first chance I get at better viewing the cable company is out of here.

I believe as streaming TV gets better, a la carte will have to be implemented by cable and satellite companies to stay competitive. I just hope I live long enough to see it!

Someone mentioned football, thank goodness for DVR! If it's a game I really want to see, I'll wait an hour or more after it starts, and then back it up to the beginning and skip time outs and commercials. If I time it just right I can finish watching the last two minutes or so live.

We haven't watched regular TV in years, aside from the occasional Pawn Stars episode while I'm waiting for dinner. Too many commercials! So, if there is a show we really want to watch, we wait for DVDs and watch without interruptions.

Also, there hasn't been a show that I stopped what I was doing to watch since Babylon 5 went off the air 15 years ago.

It died when idiots like the khartrashians and honey boob boob made it to the screen. Who ever decided to put them on TV should be flogged with a wet towel.

It's already dead in our house. Dish got too expensive for the content (just paying for commercials) and we don't have cable in my neighborhood. We stream everything now, just have to wait awhile for it to become available. Netflix and other companies that do the same thing will be the norm in 5 years unless cable and dish cut their prices in half and double their content. That just isn't going to happen.

I have an antenna in my attic........get network TV and whatever else is free. Watch the weather first thing in AM, "some" of the local news, turn it off! Again watch "some" of the national/local news at bedtime. It has greatly increased the amount of time I have for other things. WooHoo

It might as well be dead with the **** they're showing! When they do have something on worthwhile that you enjoy, I guarantee it will be taken off for something worthless and stupid for the brainless masses!
I wish they would force the cable and dish outfits to go to ala carte menu options! But it probably would become totally worthless since they now would have to give the customers what they want and for what they want to pay.

In 15 years I'd be 92 and even grumpier.

Not going to happen. At least not the 92 part.

In all likelihood, I'll be dead in 15 years. Ergo, I don't care one way or the other.

Yep, me too. However it's interesting to me to talk about the subject. Just look at all the changes in your lifetime and only half of that life had advance technology. Very interesting world we live in and I never fail to marvel at how fast it's changing.

TV is already dead, it just doesn't know it yet.

There's a reason I have a large selection of movies.

Funny at my camp in vt I have no tv and don't miss it. The coyote howling and the bears hootin all night long entertain me.

Funny they took off Popeye, the three stooges off the air for being violent. Ever watch spongebob, )"(spoooogebub)" south park or family guy?
No wonder the younger kids of today are messed up. They can't say the word "heck" today it's a bad word? What have we become?

I can tell you that before I retired, the line of work I did was being taken over by a "new generation." These kids, especially the females, loved the type of shows you speak of and whenever they had a few minutes to sit around staring at their phones, they were alive with chatter about these shows - who was in bed with who, did you see her eyelashes?, etc. These kids actually thought shows like the "Amish Mafia", "Pawn Stars" and "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" (and on and on) were real life depictions to the point that it became sickening. If you said one word to any of them about these shows that differed from their opinion, they would run to their supervisors and claim you are picking on them. Television today is catering to this upcoming crowd as are the phone and electronic companies. I'm sure thankful I grew up when I did and won't be around to see the end result of all this.

I agree TV has been dead for some time now. If not for my wife's Fox news and a few other stations I'd disconnect cable and use my TV antenna.
We did that for a winter after our ancient satellite dish died but she missed her shows too much and ordered cable.

We have come a long way in a couple of generations. My grandparents never owned a TV or a radio, said they couldn't stand all the noise. Now most homes are full of electronics of some sort. Older I get I am thinking my grandparents were right, it's all just too much noise.

I DVR the shows I want and flush the rest.

It will most likely be alive with "reality" shows, celebrity gossip and/or news propaganda, ie: look what it's done for our leader{s}. It's the people in front of it, IMO, that will be/are "brain" dead.

Other than TCM and Big Bang Theory, it's mostly dead for me NOW.

I hate to break it to you, but I don't think they are missing you much -

I have wanted to be able to pick the channels I pay for for a very long time. I may live long enough to see it but I doubt it. I think it is the "older" generation that is keeping TV alive.

I have two in their 20's and both only subscribe to the cable company for Internet access. They pick up some antenna broadcasts but streaming is the order of the day. One did do Netflix and dropped it but that one is hoping HBO does start streaming without being tied to a cable subscription. Assuming they don't charge too much that is.

As more and more go to the streaming, the cable companies will find a way to up the bandwidth and up the price for it. They ain't no fools.

Television has been dying a slow and horrid death for years and pulling all of progressive humanity into its agonizing quagmire of suffering.
I don't have cable- after seeing some of the shows broadcast on cable I can assure you I never will. I seldom watch TV. I prefer to watch old TV shows on the computer.
I can't say whether the prediction given will come true. But in my book, it already has. And in reality, it probably should.

TV died for me about four years ago when I canceled my cable subscription. Most of what I saw before canceling was either silly or politically motivated.
PIP TV.

I hope it does soon. Hate driving all the way to the grandparents houses so they can tell their grandkids to be quiet so they can hear the rerun for the 10th time.

I've not had a TV for 11 years. I do stream some things online, but that's it.

I think you are right about the future of streaming content. However, if and when the other providers (cable, satellite, etc.) go away, Streaming providers will likely have to pay more for the content. When that happens you and I will be paying more for the content we consume. No free lunches.

One possible positive outcome from rising content prices: maybe some of the drivel that passes for news and informed opinion will no longer be affordable. Also, if the TV big wheels needed to cut costs, who would miss the talking heads?
