Default Close US Marshal Badge?

I picked up the badge in the photo yesterday. I was told it was A US Marshal's badge and the Indian head logo was from the Omaha tribe. Supposedly it was used by a US Marshal assigned to the Omaha reservation.

Any LEO here who has any knowledge of the history of these things?

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks

From my collecting perspective and opinion - It looks like it may have been a badge from some sort of law enforcement in the tribe you speak of BUT, being that it looks like someone added the U and the S to it at some time, I would be very doubtful to say it is an old U.S. Marshall badge. It is neat though!

Various states have enacted laws against possession of insignia by non LEO members of the agency in question. Still there is a brisk trade in legitimate law enforcement memorabilia, especially vintage items.

For every real antique LE badge you see, you will also see literally thousands of fakes, reproductions, & out right fantasy badges.

From almost 50 years of chasing antique badges my opinion, FWIW, is that is a reproduction badge that someone has "enhanced".

Just FYI the U. S. Marshal's service standardized their badges in 1941. Prior to that badge styles varied by jurisdiction. U. S. Marshal's are appointed to their posts, Deputies hired. They serve by State, IE the U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Arkansas and the U. S. Marshal for the Eastern District.
Not towns, or counties, or reservations . Prior to Oklahoma becoming a State in 1907, there might have been a DUSM for the Indian Territory, or Oklahoma Territory, but not a specific reservation.

A good number of old deputy marshal badges were carved out of Mexican Silver Dollars. They still have the serrations around the rim.

How about Texas Rangers badges . . . could they have been made the same way?

Here's one that I've had for many years . . .

Cool

Perhaps the original badge owner was the Deputy Marshal for an insurance company.

if memory serves me right the original Texas Ranger badges were all made from Mexican 50 peso coins confiscated during the Texas War of Independence & they have been used ever since.........that is the only gold one I ever saw, is it plated? or from a gold coin?

added:
thank you for the correction. not a 50 peso coin but a 5 peso coin... I plead an advanced case of CRS.

Originally the Texas Rangers had no official badge. At some point in time (probably post-Civil War when the Rangers were reestablished and Reconstruction government came to an end) the common practice was to have badges made from Mexican "cinco peso" (5 pesos) silver coins, cutting out the star center, stamping the "Texas Ranger" and company designation.

In more recent years there has been an official badge adopted and issued to each new Ranger. But the tradition of having one made by a good silversmith using a "cinco peso" silver coin remains. The Rangers themselves refer to it as a "cinco peso" rather than using the word badge.

As others have pointed out, badges of the US Marshals have varied widely over the years, and from one federal district to another. The current US Marshals badge design was standardized during the 1960's.

Both the US Marshals and Texas Ranger badges have been copied, counterfeited, and sold for decades. Probably one of the most common con jobs in the field of LE collectibles.

Just to add a little more to the discussion, I recently acquired a vintage Colorado Rangers badge, authenticated to the 1960's to 1970's era. Colorado's first statewide law enforcement agency, and actively involved in both Indian wars and the Battle of Glorieta Pass (only Civil War battle fought in Colorado when Confederate forces advanced intending to seize the silver mining fields). Colorado Rangers were also charges with enforcing Prohibition, which Colorado adopted a couple of years ahead of the federal Volstead Act. The organization still exists as part-time volunteers, certified as peace officers, lending assistance to agencies anywhere in the state as requested by sheriffs and police chiefs (much involvement in search & rescue work).

The badge in the photo was originally issued to the Durango, Colorado troop. Probably kept by a retired Ranger, and ended up in a private collection years ago. I am donating it to the Colorado Rangers.

The lighting makes it appear gold. It is of recent manufacture and is made from steel & brass and silver plated. To make them appear more authentic they mimic the serrated edge.

I think only the FBI, DEA, US Marshals and US Park Police have their own unique badges; all other feds have a variation of a basic shield

Back in early 80's I held a "Special" Texas Ranger commission. We were authorized to have the badge made at own expense. We could purchase a Mexican 5 peso coin and send to certain place to have badge made, but suggested we purchase a certain year coin due to that particular year having a higher silver content than others. Can't exactly remember the year, but was 1942 or something like that.
