I've had four cases diagnosed and successfully treated by MOHS surgery. One in my ear, and three on my nose. I would suggest you find a dermatologist certified in MOHS surgery and have it taken care of in a timely manner as they can get nasty. The sooner the better. Good luck and I wish you all the best.

As long as they are caught early, they aren't a serious problem. My elderly Mother had six of them, all on her face, near her ears, or on her neck, removed over a period of about 10 years. She was told that they were cause by damage from sunlight when she was young, or younger. She had no problems of any kind after they were removed.

One was deeper that the others, and she had to have it removed over the course of about 2 months, with 3 trips to the dermatologist. Even that one healed up with no further problems of any kind.

So, as long as you get checked regularly, and get them removed ASAP, you should have no significant trouble from them.

I had one next to my left eye that got about 1/4 inch in diameter. Got it removed on the 12th. My eye is still swollen as is the side of my face. Too bad I couldn't get it done sooner because it could have been a lot simpler. I just got back to work today. So it cost me dearly.

They put me under, Thankfully. Because it took them better than four hours. I guess there were roots under the skin that he found as the surgery went on.

The Doc (plastic surgery) assured me that he got it all and I should heel up nicely.

Take care of it ASAP. They don't spread but they do continue to get bigger.

Pic of me the day after surgery, Clowning.

I've had so darned many of them cut off me that I've lost count. Seriously!!

My first one was removed 42 years ago. I got badly sunburned when I was only five years old, and then started paying for it when I was around 24.

Now, I see my dermatologist every six months, and believe me, it's well worth it.

I was told back when they discovered that first basal cell carcinoma, "Look! From now on, whenever you go outside, you wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and a broad-brimmed hat...and I don't mean a cap!!!"

John B. Stetson has been an inseparable friend ever since.

I'm about the same as Mule Packer, I've had them removed from my face, chest, hand and back.

Visit your dermatologist every six months for a check-up, and when you are outdoors be sure to wear sun protective clothing and a wide brim hat.

I've been fishing here in Florida for forty years, I'm sure the sun's reflection off of the water was the major cause for most of my skin damage.

If you're lucky and it's subcutaneous, it can be treated without surgery. Mine was. They gave me a RX for a cream you apply 5 days a week for 6 weeks. Killed it dead, just a little scar.

Thumbs up on this. Had the same procedure 10 years ago and no problem since.

Wife had a run with them last year. Believe it lads, you do not want to be the guy sitting in the room for three or four hours while they carve on your bride's very lovely face.

Her MOHS surgeon is a very deft hand, a woman who knew what was at stake. Hands like a sculptor. My wife's scarring is minimal, which is astounding considering the amount of tissue that had to be removed.

She has recently undergone a bluelight therapy to stave off any forthcoming concerns. These things tend to recur. Look into it -- it's a newer procedure and could help with those of us who must maintain fair skin damaged by UV in youth.

Had a soup spoon size chunk taken out of my right scapula. I have Agent Orange from Nam. Made an appt. with a VA off-site Derm. They couldn take me for six months. Bled, itched everyday.
Finally get to see the Doc and he says "why did you wait so long?" Explained. Too large for him to treat. Sent me to a Plastic Dr. What a joke. The chunk & scar are not what I would call "plastic surgery".

They still don't have a Dermatologist at my VA. Ready for my next check-up. Asked for a referral last year, still waiting. I know I have more but they're small.

Get treated early, no problem. Wait and it gets bad.

Follow the other posters advice.

Delays for that long are not AOK.
The VA can have a fire lit under them by calling your congressmen.

Several yeas back I was loosing a lot of blood from a "horrendous bleeding diverticulitis". The VA paid the civie ER bills. Saving my bacon at the time.

Thanks for your service.
Don't delay with cancer.
I am beating the odds now.

I had one cut off. The Dr. insisted on taking out quite an area around it. He explained it was one of the better skin cancers to have if you had to have one.

Exactly, Gregg. My doc said if you've gotta have cancer, then this is the one you want.

He's cut off a bunch from my face, neck, & back.

I'm a Florida boy from the generation that never used sun screen. We slathered Baby Oil on our skin since we thought it made us tan darker.

Of course, I am fair complected, so I am paying for all the fun in the sun.

Well, the sunburns, anyway. I did have a lot of fun back then living on a beach which was a big tourist attraction, with lots of girls.

But, I digress. Just let doc cut 'em off. You can't fix your skin now and those little buggars are the result of something 20, 30 or 40 years ago. In my case, maybe 50.

If I was a young person now, I'd never go without sun screen.

Bob

Hey rimfired:

Didn't you get the new card they just sent out from the VA. It lets you go to a community doc if the VA doesn't have the right doctor or can't get you in fairly quickly.

I got mine and, although we are (allegedly) one of the two largest VA hospitals in the US, they ain't got no ENT docs. So, I get to go to a community doc and the VA pays.

Thanks for all the replies and advice..
On my first visit, I did have the one removed from my cheek and the one under my breast..No MOH, I don't think..The incision on my cheek was about 1 and 1/2" long..It has healed up nicely..The one under my breast was about the same length, and it hasn't healed as well..I will have the stitches removed today..
I go back this morning to have the one on my shoulder taken off..
These cancers are the result of my "love for the sun"..My fault, I have no excuses..I'll have to take precautions in the future..
Thanks again...

Update my visit today..The one on my shoulder was cut out..The one that I have on my right forearm, that I thought might be treated otherwise, was cut out as well ( due to my other biopsies and the condition).. I was able to watch that removal..I was surprised at the amount of tissue removed..
The procedure on my cheek is surprisingly unnoticeable , very happy with that..
I trust this Dermatologist and am pleased with his work..
I asked about the Mohs procedure..he went into detail about that procedure..BTW, it was named after the DR. that invented the prodedure..Dr Mohs..

Had one removed from back and another from an upper arm. my dermatologist calls them manly scars. No problems since the removals and keep an eye out to see if any more develop.

Basal cell has little if any risk of metastasis, I was told. Mine was squamous cell type, which can spread to organs; but it was removed some years ago and has never returned. I have some spots now I need to have looked at.

I thought you might like to see a picture of the basal cell carcinoma's ...The right shoulder as shown was just a biopsy not the removal, which was done Tuesday..
