Bad shape don't make it old, old don't make it valuable
Well I've seen it all now folks
A local add is now running for a "90 yr. old, rare" NEF 12ga. single shot, "$700 to $1200 value" for only $695. The kicker is it has enough rust etc. to look the part.
Now the quandary, to post a few cold, hard facts (true fair value, ~$50) or just keep on keeping on minding my own business?
What say you, what would you do? What would P. T. Barnum do?

Think you're real generous at $50.

Perhaps it is worth 700 bucks to some poor, misguided sap (I mean soul). Unless you actually know the poster, shake your head, chuckle and let it go.
Just my .02!

One of Barnum's spiritual descendants probably ran the ad.
Sadly, some idiot may fall for the scam.

90 years ago, there WAS no NEF: it was Harrington & Richardson (H&R).

I have encountered many gun sellers who view $1,000 as the minimum price for anything identifiable as having once been a firearm of any kind. This is not surprising.

In my youth, a gentleman named Robert Carey spent time feeding my obsession with firearms. At that time he was one of the top 5 or 6 U.S. Military firearms collectors in the country. He also did appraisals of various firearms from time to time. One of the observations he made was that the toughest thing about doing an appraisal is convincing people that just because something is old does not mean it's worth a fortune.

If I could get them to come down to about $40, it'd make a great base for a floor lamp.

Ditto...over the years I've seen far too many store/hardware brand shotguns that belonged to Grand Paw that weren't worth more than the sentimental value they place on it. People tend to get their knickers in a wad when they hear it.

I wouldn't give $50 for a new NEF shotgun. Also, the New England Firearms (NEF) trademark wasn't used until 1987. So at most the gun can only be 35 years old.
You'd have to pay me to take that one.

Easy to up it's value
If you were to break it down to basic parts,
The barrel would prolly do for a jack handle
The stock pieces would make fire wood
See how easy it is to double the value of an El cheapo
