Man was I humbled.
Coach Turner, pitching coach, was watching me warm up before the game. Now, the older I get the better an athlete I was as a young man. But this always jars me back to reality.
Coach Turner said," You know Biginge, its hard to have an effective change up when your fast ball is only 54 mph."

Would a 30mph change up make it to home plate?

How many bounces does your change up require to get to home plate?

Fastball made it once all the way in the air. If I really fell off the mound to the first base side, given my large stature, change up generally two hops. Batters were somewhat intimidated by list towards first. I pitched from the stretch a LOT.

It doesn't have to stay in the air all the way to the plate. If the batter swings and misses,STRIKE ! If he swings and hits it fair or foul, it's the same as any other pitch. Course, if it just kinda dribbles across in the dirt, might ought not use it with runners on base.
Glad to see Football all gone for the year, and ready for the "boys of summer" Biginge ?

Yeah buddy. The exhilaration of a two hop strike out when you "break their back" with a changeup is beyond compare in a sporting event.

Yeah but...ever notice how some of them little "skinny-bone" lefties can "nine iron" that thing out over the right field porch ?
Taint fair.

Okay, some of the responses drives a question. If a pitch hits in front of the plate but crosses the strike zone is it a strike?

My little brother once went for golf lessons and after the pro watch him hit a few balls, he asked him if he was an athlete in high school. My little brother got a little proud and said "Why yes, I played football, why do you ask?" He answered, " because you would have to be an athlete to hit the ball with that swing."

No. If a ball bounces off the dirt and into the strike zone is it considered a strike or a ball

If you'd only learned to throw a knuckler you'd have been a star. It would have just fluttered up to the plate in five directions at once. Between that and your size the batters would have been terrified.

I can testify to that, and I'm not a pilot.

Even a tailwind is not always a good thing, twice. Takeoffs & landings.
Oh yeah, there's a third time.....in hunt camp after a beans & franks dinner.

Or anywhere after eating White Castle burgers.
I guess that isn't "tailwind" in the usual sense.
