Business car parks in front of a fire hydrant which the fire department needs to use to help extinguish a house fire. Bet the boss isn't to happy about this.

Where's the broken safety glass littering the ground?

Edit: Does anyone else see the irony of the "Rio Grande Fence Company" . . . .?

I thought maybe the driver left the windows down as a courtesy, just in case there was a fire. Trying to avoid the ticket.

Kind of reminds me of the scene in "Backdraft", where the firemen break the windows out of the black Mercedes for the same reason.

That internet-pic joke is kind of old.

Where's that pick of the dead possum in the middle of the road that the line painters painted right over?

Actually that picture is less than 3 days old now. Was shown on the news the other night. Great way to advertise for your company. I have also heard about it, saw pictures but have never seen one this close to home. I would have to give the Firemen on the scene a hearty "Great Job"

What happens when you park in front of a fire hydrant, and there is a fire!Standard practice in NYC. Parking in front of a hydrant is extremely dangerous to the rest of the community. No one wants to see someone's car destroyed but fire doesn't wait on anyone.

My city Fire dept HAS done & WILL do just that. Then, we coppers cite the car & may tow it, or leave it for the owners "oh #%*+!" reaction. It's all fun and games till the fire boys show up and stuff needs breaking! They're specialists legal vandalism. .

I love scofflaws, they're so stupid they can't get out of their own way....

I remember one time a department used the jaws to take the doors off a Mercedes to get at the hydrant!

Not an internet joke.

A friend from NYC has posted some pics of cars that have fire trucks on them, or that have had a fire truck driven over them to get where they need to be. And I bet the car owner's insurance won't cover it. I'm sure as I can be that a damage claim against the FD/city will get a short response in the nature of "FYVM, Strong letter to follow", too.

Stupid should hurt.

About 40 years ago I saw the results of a car parked in front of a hydrant. Big pumper truck with massive bumper just shoved the car about 40 feet down the street, then carried on with fire department business. I served the parking ticket on the owner, who got there just in time to watch the tow truck leaving with his wreck.

Always fancied an 8x8 BTR for some reason. Major cool factor, although the early ones had some strange twin engine setup that was a bit unreliable.

Id like to see a lot of flat tires on the cars that block handicap ramps. I see that all the time here.

Really no excuse for doing such damage-- and no, I don't want to hear it-- just as easy to run a hose over the trunk or what ever and deal with the idiot who parked there later-- once again proof that some people need no excuse to exceed their authority -- JMHO

I was kind of wondering the same thing... seems like a lot more work to pop the windows and thread the hose than to just flop it over the roof.... any firemen care to explain? are they trying to keep the hose low for more pressure? or just making a point? (Note, I have no sympathy for the folks that parked there... screw em)

I know my neighbors daughter parks in front of the fireplug that will be used for our house... they are nice people, but just don't have any other place to park.... I asked our local FD about it and they said "see those big chrome bumpers?"... they just shove em down the street here.... of course, if there is a parallel park situation, that cannot happen....

You know thinking back on this.... its actually pretty nice for the guys to just bust your windows... they ARE authorized to push, and many of these pictures they could have done much more damage.....

I hear what you are saying but I think that high pressure lines of that size don't always bend so well. I also think that some drivers just figure, "what are the chances that there will be a fire while I'm parked there anyway" and in kind, the firefighters want to show that it can happen.

Yeah, I reckon it is usually EASIER to run the hose over, but it lacks the educational value, which IS in the public interest.

You ever had to attach a supply hose to a hydrant in a hurry?

rather looked as if those LDH hadn't been pressurized yet. THey don't kink like that with water in them. I always thought one of the best parts of being a Firefighter is that you get to break stuff. Us cops always have to write a report if we break stuff. The Fire guys just go back to the House, take a shower, eat something, and go back to sleep! (I keed, I keed!!)

Once you open the hydrant, that hose is getting all the pressure it's going to get. The pressure out of the hydrant is dependent upon what the municipal water system can provide, and can't be increased or decreased easily by the system, if at all. You take what you can get. The kinks in the hose impede the pressure delivered to the engine intake, which is why firefighters try to minimize the kinks and turns. They don't straighten out if there's not enough space to do so, no matter how much pressure is at the hyrdrant. A car blocking the hydrant causes trouble in making a straight run to the engine intake, which is why some of the previous pictures display an engine not getting much water at all.

Over this past summer the Boston Fire Department broke the windows of a BMW. It seems these turds with expensive cars think they can park where they want.

Second picture down in ServiceGun's post is Boston Engine 37 in the background. It's not the first time BFD has put a hose through a car at a fire scene, probably won't be the last.

My experience is with watching BFD fight fires, but I suspect that most FDs are the same. They are ruthless when it comes to getting access to the fire and getting water.

Which is as it should be.

I think they should be pushed out of the way then towed and crushed. Any applicable metal would then be donated to a fire hydrant manufacturer.

No not unnecessary damageif it's your property and seconds count!
It is what it is and those that deserve get! Some engines don't have the extra long hydrant sleeve to do fancy hook ups around cars. We had an engine that we had to have lined up just perfect to get it connected, with plenty of practice our guys did it every time! Couldn't wait for that engine to go!
In my day as a fire officer I never had the problem and I never would have hesitated to do what had to be done,,,,but the guys always knew.
To this day I see a car in front of a hydrant I report it, and I always check back to see if it was tagged or moved!

My son-in-law is a Captain in the Petersburg, VA Fire Department. The FD where you are is completely different than in Petersburg. After each call he has paperwork to turn in. His men clean, check equipment & have everything ready for the next call before as you say go back to the House, take a shower, eat something, & go back to sleep! Most nights they get NO sleep because they are running calls all night. And if a truck gets scratched he has a mountain of paperwork to write up. So they don't push cars out the way, they just destroy them if needed. And the City doesn't pay for the damages. Some idiot that parks in front of a fire hydrant & thinks the law doesn't apply to them should get their car destroyed.

A bit off topic but it does sort of fit. You think the fire departments plays hard ball do not mess with iron workers when they have to maneuver large steel.

Years back (early 1970s) I was working on a HUGE construction project called the South Mall in Albany (correct name today is the Empire State Plaza in Albany)

It covered over a 150 acres and parking was rather limited. We had this one person that had a new Cadillac and a huge ego and he thought he was entitled to park anywhere he wanted. He parked in a very clearly marked spot that said it was reserved for tractor trailers and a crane to raise steel. He parked in a real bad spot and was holding things up (time is money)

Our iron workers a rather rough and ready bunch took matters into their own hands and busted out the windows of the new Caddy, ran steel choker’s through the car hooked them to the crane and reposition the Caddy out of their way. I saw the Caddy and the damage done probably totaled it!

The steel raising took about two hours and the car owner never returned in that time, which was probably good for him because if he got into the iron workers faces he would have had a ambulance ride to the ER. Most Irion Workers do not play games.

Whatever happened next I have no clue but nothing ever hit the new papers or TV news, and I never saw that Caddy again!

Depends on the position of the car to the hydrant. If the window is directly ifo the hydrant, the window gets taken out. 5 inch supply line doesn't bend so easily when charged. If you put a 90 degree bend in a supply line you're going to have one pissed off MPO, as well as some angry nozzleman.
Look at some of the pics, having a car ifo a hydrant is not an optimum situation.
Let's see, causing some damage to your car, which insurance will cover, or having people trapped in a dwelling because of lack of water pressure or delay in delivering water. What would you choose?

A bit off the thread also.

Used to live in Los Angeles and one day waiting for the light to change to cross the street, a car pulled up across the white line blocking pedestrians.

Fellow pedestrain just walked up opened the left rear door went through opened the right rear and exited.

Driver was dumbfounded and I almost wet myself laughing.

I know our fire trucks have really big front bumpers. I'm sure they could push a little car out of the way without much trouble.

Went to a fire at a Hotel one night. Had a limo in the way. Told my truckie guy to break the window and lay a soft line through the limo. He did so and the limo driver came out of the hotel and almost ****. He had a limo with 4 inches of water in the back floor. Cop was waiting and he had a really bad evening. Luckily I only let my truck guy break ONE window and unlock the other door. They fired the driver... and I think the fine was like a 500 buck one.

Also the hotel got bagged by our fire depth investigator for having 240 people over their allowed capacity. I had a rescue guy counting the people who came out of the involved nightclub. Those people were packed in there.

Long time ago, but we would take the time to survey the surrounding buildings, and write individual tickets to the car owner for willful and wanton endangerment of the life of ... for each person, even if only "resident of apt 100". After the obstruction / fire lane parking tickets. It could rack up into the many thousands of dollars, and of course negated any possibility for the owner to make an insurance claim. Plus made them target for civil damages.

We had too much fun with that, except when people got hurt, when the charges got worse, and we got serious.

I had about forgotten those days. Maybe they were best forgotten. The reason I don't watch fire / police shows on tv.

As a former NYC resident have seen the hose through the window done a few times. Especially when the druggie across the street set his own house on fire with the tenant still in her apartment. Frank

I take it that you have not had to hit many hydrants in your day.
As one that does this, I assure you that we do not look for reasons to do excessive damage, nor do we go several extra other steps to avoid damage to something that is illegally in our way when doing our job of preserving life and property from fire. I do not recommend parking where curbs are painted yellow, either......
