Reached a milestone today
Paid off the last of my debt that I had from when I was married. For the first time in my adult life (I'm 45) I'm debt free to ANYBODY. My girlfriend an I don't own a house; we rent, but in our particular situation, a mortgage and house for us right now would be downright silly. I had a credit card that she had maxed out before our divorce, and I had numerous other smaller bills to pay off as well. I ended up with all the outstanding debt, mainly because the ex had NO credit whatsoever, and the debt she ran up was in my name. I figured it was best for me to just pay it; that way I knew it was done. Anyway, I paid off the last four hundred bucks today, and I could have danced my way out of the credit union that that credit card bill was at. Two vehicles paid for, a great roof over our heads and I don't owe anybody a DAMN THING! Just wanted to share some good news.

Congratulations. The wife and I worked really hard to pay off our house and student loans. For me debt free means freedom. I will never ( God willing) pay interest ever again. We save and invest most of what we make and only buy what we can afford in cash. Financial security is something you can't put a price on.

jframe,
Congratulations, I think instead of "milestone" in your post, "millstone" may be more appropriate.

Hooray, it's a good feeling is it not! I've been debt free your about seven years now and it is a bit liberating. However I did come back to earth a bit when I realized I was renting my house from the county and local school district. If ya don't pay the property tax and the school tax your home go's bye-bye! With that said it is satisfying not having any pesky debts, it leaves more moola for buying a nice S&W now and again!

Congratulations!
I still have the house to pay off, but I'm well on my way. One day I will be totally debt free too.

It's the only way to live. I had years of the family debt, mortgage, car loans, medical bills, etc. As the children moved out and I had more money to use, I concentrated on eliminating debt. Before I retired I reached my goal, and promised myself I would stay that way. Just this morning, I had the notice email from my bank of my Soc. Sec. deposit, and I went on line and transferred $2500 from checking to savings. Seems my income has been exceeding my spending, which it does several times a year. It was very satisfying buying my last car for cash, not a new car, but a 2 yr old one with just over 20,000 miles on it. I've been doing that for many years and have never had a problem. I let someone else pay for that first 25% depreciation.

jframe CONGRATS, long hard road but the best one to take.
I became debt free several years ago, and it was and still is one of the best feelings I've ever had.
Now do everything in your power to stay that way.

To be without a loan
No payments to make
Your money's your own
Like a debtless stone
