Default Hand gun registeration 411

I have a hand gun I have owned for a long time and it is not registered. It is my CCW and I have it with me all the time. I have been thinking that if someday heaven forbid I need to use it where do I stand? I figure the 1st thing that happens is the gun would be checked for proper registration. What happens from there if its not registered in my name? Here is my question. Can I take this firearm to an FFL and have it put in my name or will there be a load of paper work to get it done other than the standard form? I live in Colorado and like many others I dont like the laws, but it is the law. I can't remember if I had this gun before Colorado made the new law that a private sale or trade must be done threw an FFL. Your thoughts?

You're legal just as you are.Guns aren't registered in Colorado. The change just means that in a person to person sale, the buyer needs a nics check to ensure its legal for him to own it.

Why would it be "registered?" With whom? Is there any law in Colorado that requires a gun to be registered with somebody?

Why would there be any evidence of a NICS check? The records are supposed to be destroyed within some short time period. I can't remember if it is 24 hours, 30 days, or what.

Liberal Hollywood would have you think that the federal government requires or that all 50 states have some kind of gun registration. It ain't so.

WAY too many people get their "knowledge" of local gun laws from watching "Law & Order: Elevator Inspection Unit (E.V.U.)" or some other swill.

If you are involved in a shooting and have broken a law in any way, you are in deep trouble. Know and follow the law.

If you carry your gun concealed outside your home, you need to have a CCW license. The license is for you, not the gun. Open carry does not require a license in Colorado. See http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/colorado.pdf for more info.

No gun registration puleeez !

A Google search can generally turn up the wording of a particular State law, but there is no harm in asking in a gun forum I suppose.

Wyoming gun laws are such that they seem to encourage people to get guns...make guns...hide guns in the woods...get more guns...

I suspect that the OP's peril extends far beyond the points specified.

Sir, know the law, where you stand.
while it varies from state to state, ignorance is no excuse when you jam yourself up six ways from Sunday because you have no idea what laws, if any, you may have violated upon contact with law enforcement after the fact.

My thought is you need to read up on Colorado's gun laws

They can't pass an Ex Post Facto law

US Constitution Article 1 Section 9 Clause 3 No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed.

So they can't legally force you to go back after the fact and get a new NICS check on a gun you bought prior to 01 July 2013.

That said you really need to get a working understanding of Colorado's gun laws

The 4473 is kept for years. I think it's 10 years.

Our posters seem intent on beating on the OP here. No reason for that. If he doesn't have a good working knowledge of his states laws I'd suggest he contact a provider of CCW training and take a refresher course. He might even be allowed to sit in for free.

Many of us have what might be called "unregistered" guns.

And the media is a terrible offender. I think its a Samuel Clemonds/Mark Twain quote that he who doesn't read the news paper is uninformed, he who does is misinformed. I tend to read papers from my state. I use USNPl.com, bu any on line source will give you papers. We here in KY probably have some of the least restrictive laws. The anti gun nuts have listed us as one of the most dangerous states. Good. But the media often writes about someone having an "unregistered" gun. I have no idea how anyone could register a gun here. Who would you go to?

The Louisville papers are often worse, suggesting someone had "illegal cop killer bullets". Most often in an article about hollow points. We do actually ban AP bullets in handguns. We don't see many of those.

Was not my intention to beat on him, but rather draw his attention to details he may be missing.
After the shots ring out and a body hits the floor, no one is immune to the full wrath of the law bearing down upon them.
Surviving this second round of fighting is relative to one's knowledge of the law.
It's far better to know these things well in advance, rather than learn as you go.

I was concerned for him as the basic nature of his questions makes me wonder what else he is missing on the subject.
The difference between walking free and sitting on death row can be as simple as understanding the law.

4473 has nothing to do with NICS. When calling in to NICS they are told only if it is a hand gun or long gun.
