Default Vietnam Vets-When & Where

I've seen many vets on this forum. Just curious as to when & where. Who knows, maybe we were just across the rice paddy from one another. Me....Chu Lai, 1966 & 67. Right between MAG 16 & MAG 36.
Forgot to mention. I was the one wearing green.

My association with SEA started with 18 months on Guam doing Arc Light in 67-68, 4133 BW, DCOITP. I spent the vast majority of 1971 in Saigon assigned to Hq MACV (J234). Then in 1975 I did a year in Thailand at the 621 TCS.

Went back to Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) as a tourist a year ago... interesting.

Class of '70-71 here, U.S. Army attached to 1098 Medium Boat Company, crewed on LCU 1015 and hauled howitzer charges and other heavy freight north as far as Chu Lai, south to Tan Mai. I remember with the wrong tide it could be a real pain getting around the point at Chu Lai in order to get to the landing ramp. There was some story about a big island we could barely see as we rounded the point, something about V.C. Island or other. Our boat broke up during typhoon Kate while we were on a mission for the Seabees, even made the Stars and Stripes. After the boat broke up I ended up working as a radio operator for the Harbormaster up on the point overlooking the harbor...THAT was great duty but as usual I screwed that up and ended up finishing my last few weeks in supply back at the company area, that was a real downer...I used to see the company area only on payday.
Am I the only guy that never runs into anybody else that had a simple job to do or wasn't a member of the Green Berets or Marine Recon. I have to admit I've never run into any other GI type that worked on water the way I did but I sure knew plenty of guys that did their entire tour working a radio, typewriter, or worked in supply, the company area was full of guys that were in support of everthing else. As far as I can remember outside of getting shot at from shore a couple of times while on a coastal run (with 150short ton of howitzer charges on deck) I was in more danger sleeping in my bunk back at the company area when we got rocketed or mortared. Our base was right across the road from a Marine Corps Helicopter base, we caught all of Charlies short rounds intended for the Corps.

Thanks Guys! Its very overdue, but we owe a debt that can never be repaid!

My Pop was there 68-69ish (sort of).... he flew RC121 recon aircraft (553rd Reconnaissance Wing BatCats) out of Korat RAFB, Thailand.... he listened to a lot of the bad guys, and tried to arrange that they go away.

I wasn't in country but served in a different capacity. USN 64-69 in the seas where the water temp was 30degs F(not ice - can't launch missiles under ice)! I'm a "Blue Nose" card holder(crossed the Artic circle)! Thank you to all those that served and are serving!

1968-9, MACV CORDS. Lived in Saigon, and often went out on inspections, anywhere from Ca Mau to Da Nang. Also got to Con Son Island twice. Only got shot at twice: they happened to put a few rounds of artillery into where I was on an inspection tour.

DaNang '72.
I had the glorious duty of shoving gas into stuff that flies.
The hardest thing was avoiding the random "golden flow" tests.

You don't think I got this way on my own do ya?

USS Franklin D Roosevelt CVA 42 westpac cruise 66 to 67 and then home. We spent more time below water than a submarine. Most snipes on that ship did. Frank

We may have met then. I ended up spending the night in the Hospital at Fort Leonard Wood in the Fall of 68 with an upper respiratory infection. I remember the doctor was a really cute captain. I was a PFC at the time. I never made it to Nam either. My overseas tour was in Alaska at Fort Wainwright.

326 Med Bn, 101st Airborne (Airmobile) Div, Camp Eagle, '70-'71. When I left for RVN my son was 20 months old and my daughter 2 weeks old. He's 46 now and has two kids, she's 44 with 3 kids, and I added three more kids later. Puts that time into some perspective.

18th MP BDE, HHQ Long Binh 12-69 to 11-70. I was trained as an MP, but my first day in country I was asked if I could type. My dad said never volunteer, but I figured I had nothing to loose at that point. I typed intelligence reports and got to go to the general's daily briefing. It was interesting, 12 hour days, 7 days a week, but it sure beat being out in the jungle. For a couple of weeks we had a pistol "team" and I got to shoot the 1911 some.

The draft board was freely giving away scenic tours of Fort Benning and S.E. Asia in '68 and since I know what pine trees look like I decided to go into the CG.
Was just telling my youngest son last night, while one of the send money to the sandbox vet groups commercials was on, that the nation needs to do a bunch of retro support to the Vietnam vets. It wasn't a popular war but the bullets and blood was real, and I think the ones that were drafted against their wants and wishes deserve a lot of support and praise from the nation.

Long Binh late 69' and early 71' most of 70' was at Fire Base Mace, Black Horse and Yuan-Lux. Also in Cambodia near the parrots beak, during operation Fish Hook (building a portable airstrip)

Too young here. The only contribution I ever made--aside from our school who adopted several soldiers and such that we sent cards and candy too--All I ever got to do--was to kick a hippie in his knee when I was about six or seven. Said hippie was protesting the war--and had stationed himself right across the street from where we lived--- at Flato Park--holding a peace sign and chanting something. I was irritated so I ran across the street and kicked him in the knee.

Yeah the 'baby killer' protests, when we landed at LAX on returning from 'Nam, was a hard pill to swallow..We showed a lot of restraint as we were in uniform..Always respect the uniform..I had some encounters later in "Civvy " life, where I did let loose..

Another FO, different branch of the service..Nothing like dotting the I on a target with a 175mm..The reason being the 175 did not shoot a WP round..All HE rds..Better get it right..Of course you could adjust the fuse, delayed, quick , super quick, air burst and such..When the impact is close to your ***, a delayed fuse first rd was adviseable..Then adjust fire and do some damage..
The most accurate arty in 'nam was the 8" SP, followed closely by the 155mm..( just my opinion ) Cease fire ! End of mission..

FWI, WP is Willie Pete
HE , is High Explosive

I also was too young, born in '59. I do remember when I was 7 or 8 and I realized what was really going on and realized what war really meant, it had a profound impact on me. Seeing what was on TV and hearing the news about the casualties scared the heck out of me and made me very sad. Thank you all for your service and sacrifice, I'm humbled by it and glad you guys made it through.

One other group of military members we need to thank are the Cold War Vets. Service From 1950- 1994. the countless training hours, inspections, war games, 24/36/48 hour work days. the troops that died during these training to keep the Soviets from attacking Europe. These man/women deserve thanks for their service.

US Air Force Security Service. Monkey Mtn. was supposed to be home, but wound up at ASA Radio Research sites in RVN and Thailand, 1972-1974. Imagine that.

We landed at Cam Ranh Bay on July 23. 1973. I remember how quiet it was on the plane, no one was talking. I had orders to go to Phan Rang (Happy Valley) to work on C-123s as a crew chief. They were shutting down that unit. They were spraying chemicals. I was later sent to Tan Son Nhut where I was assigned as a crew chief on an EC-47 with the 360th TEWS (Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron.) I was scheduled to leave on July 22, 1972 but we were not getting new people so we had more airplanes than crew chiefs and still flying everyday so I was involuntarily extended. I finally got out of there sometime in late August. When I got back to the States I was back on Jets as a crew chief on a B-52 with SAC. I liked working on the Goony Bird because we actually were able to work on the airplane. The crew Chief on the B-52 spent most of our time doing preflight inspections or pulling alert, much of the wrench work was done by specialists shops.

Navy Seabees (MCB-40). Chu Lai (Oct 67 - Jun 68), Phu Bai (Dec 68 - Aug 69).

At Chu Lai for Tet 68, now that was "exciting", especially when the ASP went up. We had dets all over Quang Ngai Province.

Hue/Phu Bai was even more "interesting" because for the first time we faced more NVA than VC and the amount of incoming and perimeter probe showed it. Casualties showed it too.
